    Wolfenstein Error!

It is set to 72, I am thinking you want me to set this higher right? I have 512 MB of RAM so say a setting of 96 or 128 will do the trick?
  2. I use a modified keyboard/mouse setup. Fire = First Mouse Button Alt. Fire = X Forward = Second Mouse Button Backward = S Strafe Left = A Strafe Right = D Next Weapon = W Prev. Weapon = E Crouch = Z Jump = Space Use = Q Mouse is always inverted for me, not used to the other way. I use R for reloading, F, V, and C for any other special functions. Like in Deus Ex I use C to change ammo or F for sprinting in RTCW. I also still use Enter for inventory items and the square bracket keys to scroll that stuff.

    Wolfenstein Error!

I just started experiencing this problem too, using a Radeon 8500LE so its not Nvidia related, I also got SP3 now and still the game crashes after quickloading or dying in SP. I have the game patched to 1.33 and still the problem persists. But I don't have this problem in WinME, so I dual into the crappy OS and hey at least it works.

    Geforce 4 mx 440

I don't think there are GF4MX 440 cards with SDR, however I am sure that the GF4MX 420 is SDR based.
  5. Windows 2000 will only recognize the first 8GB of my Maxtor DiamondMax Plus. However it will recognize the full capacity of my 80GB Western Digital. Windows ME and Windows XP both recognize my Maxtor as 20GB and my BIOS does too, the drive has the Auto setting configured in BIOS. Do I need some sort of IDE patch or something? If I format the drive in ME and then boot to 2K it insists it is a 8 GB non-formatted drive. If I boot back into ME I can use the whole 20GB without a problem.
  6. Id software games dictate my next upgrade, right now Quake 3 and RTCW run great on my system so its all good. Doom 3 and Quake 4 will dictate the next upgrade. Before I had a 486 and Quake wouldn't run so I got a Pentium, then I needed something better for Quake 2 so I got a card with GL support, then for Quake 3 I needed the Athlon.
  7. Man I need a new PC but in Quake 3, 1024x768 resolution, 16x Anisoptropic (ATI method), full textures, 32-bit textures, 32-bit color, no V-Sync, High Quality sound, ATI Catalyst 2.2, I get around 70 FPS. Cranking it up to 1280 I still get around 65 FPS, as you can see I am severely CPU limited. This is with Radeon 8500 LE / 128MB, no O/C. This is on an Athlon 750 Classic and 512 Megs of PC133 RAM. 7200 RPM ATA66 Hard Disk, Windows 2000 SP2 (although 98SE and XP are the same)

Do I need ACPI with XP?

Check to see if you have DMA enabled for CD-Rom drives first.

    VIA chipset issues?

I am put off by VIA now, I use one of their older chipsets VIA KX133, it has issues with the SB Live! (fixed this with new SB Live Drivers), problems with stuttering speed, (fixed with PCI Latency), slow disk access, (fixed with 4-In-1), etc, etc. I have been able to fix most of my problems with VIA, but really it is quite annoying. To rely on a third party patch to fix some serious PCI issues is a bit alarming. VIA should fix it, but the VIA board also exhibited some incompatibilites with an ATA-100 card I wanted to put in. I tried putting this in an Intel chipset motherboard and off it flew without a hickup. Since the KT333 is a lot newer than my chipset you may not have problems yet but hey new hardware always brings up new problems and usually VIA chipsets suffer the most. For Athlon, consider AMD chipsets or even SIS might worthwhile, Nvidia seems quite stable too. ALI might be finnicky so I would hold off on that. Its too bad cuz VIA chipsets always have the best features and sometimes you just wanna spring for them. For example that Asus board you want has Firewire and RAID along with USB 2.0. I had a thread on VIA KT333 boards awhile back, search for it.
  10. It should work, it should be in a "demos" folder inside the baseq3 folder named like this four.dm_67 Launch Q3 then bring up the console, type timedemo 1. Then exit the console, click demos on the game menu, select four.dm_67 and then click play, once it is finished, bring up the console to see the results.

    Maxtor ATA100 Adaptor problems

Definitely going with some sort of motherboard with Highpoint controller. The one on my KA7-100 was very useful. The Maxtor ATA-100 that I returned was a repackaged Promise card, pathetic piece of crap.

How do you play FPS games control wise?

I could never move forward with w properly or any other key, had to be mouse button 2, thanks to Quake 2 mostly setting it as a default. I believe it was Quake 2 where I first started playing like this. (using a mouse for FPS). Before I used to use the keyboard for everything, back in DOS FPS days.

Fortissimo II digtal edit. in 2000/XP

For WinXP I don't thhink VIA 4-In-1's are really necessary, they caused problems for me, the default XP drivers were fast as it was. Check compatibility with your motherboard and its chipset with the sound card.

    Maxtor ATA100 Adaptor problems

Yeah it would be nice to try a HighPoint card, my old VIA board an Abit KA7-100 had one with it and it worked fine with the onboard VIA controllers, its just that I can't find a Canadian retailer for HighPoint cards, but my thinking now is to just wait until I get a new motherboard (non-VIA) and have it come with RAID support so I get extra plugs that way.

    Maxtor ATA100 Adaptor problems

Update: I disabled the onboard VIA IDE controller and hooked up all my devices to the ATA100 card and the system booted up properly and quickly. When I reenabled the onboard VIA everything slowed down again, VIA just pisses me off. I think I will just return this card and forget this whole damn idea. I really needed the extra IDE ports to hook up the hard disks as I would actually be using my ATA-100 features and it would have allowed me to get a DVD-Rom drive for the motherboard controllers, but forget that now.
  16. Not a problem AlecStarr, its good to see you prowling these forums again.
  17. If you want the old FOUR_DM.66 in Q3 1.31. Just do this, browse to your 'Quake 3' folder and then into your 'Baseq3' folder. Look for the file 'pak6.pk3' it should be around 7 megabytes or so. Open that file up in some ZIP program like WinRar that can open up ZIP files. You'll a see a 'demos' folder in the ZIP. In that folder you will see the file four_dm.66 extract that file and put it into your Q3\Baseq3\Demos folder and rename the file to four_dm.67. Then go into Quake 3, in the console type 'timedemo 1' and go to demos and you'll see it in there. id software just changed the protocol version in 1.31 to 67 from 66 which was in 1.3, any demo that worked in 1.3 just needs to be renamed.

    WinXP vs Win2K

If you don't want to mess around with compatibility on some older games, WinXP is a bit better here. Other than that 2000 is just fine and much leaner in terms of middleware and more mature (3 SP Releases).

    Win98se Service packs?

Online support for Windows 98 should still be around for awhile, heck Windows 95 online updates are still around. However, it is a good idea to grab all of those updates, I would just make a copy of your Windows 98 CD to a hard disk folder and then add in an updates folder and copy all of those patches into it, or even better just get a CD-RW and put the patches in there, thats what I do with games and stuff.

    ATI's drivers...their still doing it!

Well Direct3D seems better, played a bit of Deus Ex, image quality was nice and compared to a GeForce, the game doesn't have a cheesecloth effect over it, also it runs good with 32-bit color. For some reason every time I bench Q3, it always hits 63 FPS, doesn't matter if its 640 or 1024 or any other resolution, this pisses me off. Some sort of FPS Cap has been implemented and I tried going back to the 2.1 set and the same thing happens now. V-Sync is OFF.

I am downloading them now, I'll post some general feedback later with a Radeon 8500 LE.

    Formating / Reinstalling Frequency

I would have answered bi-annually, every six months for me. Although a new hardware device or a mess up on my part will result in a format. I have a friend who uses 98 and probably hasn't reinstalled in years, even with new hardware, man that hard disk must be so fuking fragmented, and the registry must be so damn bloated.

The phasing out of Windows 98 has begun...NT4 too.

I must admit I was a big fan of Windows 95. I remember using Win 3.1 with my 486 and I hated the fact I couldn't run my DOS games under it, I always had to reboot into DOS Mode. When 95 came out I could run all my programs under one 1 shell, it was great. The new interface was nice and it was heck of a lot more stable than 3.1. I became interested in NT, when MS released 4.0. But the lack of good game support, a biggey for me back then made it less appealing. I just couldn't get sound from DOS games. Also some of the DirectX titles failed to run. When I learned that MS wouldn't incorporate AGP, full DirectX or FAT32 for NT 4 I dumped it, moved to 98 and waited for NT 5.0 (2000).
