Deus Ex, Unreal Gold, and Unreal Tournament, all of these games run with very distorted/crackling sound under Windows XP Pro for me, this happens 9 times out of 10. What I don't understand is how sometimes it works perfectly fine, but if you exit the program and relaunch it, the crackling returns. Currently using driver 5.1.2602 from MS, but I also tried the ones from Creative's site and the default MS drivers, same problems. I also tried lowering the sound acceleration level in DXDiag, no help there either. Oh and yeah I have a VIA Based Motherboard (VIA KX133) Can someone recommend a solution or driver release that can fix this? Or perhaps a better sound card? These Santa Cruz cards look interesting, where can I get one in Canada or online?

Well the new Creative drivers for Live! cards fixed all my issues, man Creative actually got something done. I am still waiting for their reply on Audigy compatibility, 3 weeks already.

For the old DOS gamers: OpenGL ports of CLASSICS!
pmistry replied to brainsoft's topic in Slack Space
Man its great to see this thread up and running again. MisterX, Qblood is a good port but it isn't finished yet, the team even asked to me join them but due to a lack of time, I didn't. What they are trying to do is convert everything from Blood and put it into Quake. So they are changing models and maps to Quake form. They are even considering jumping to the Quake 2 engine as well. Last I heard they may even use the Doomsday engine [powers JDoom, JHeretic, and JHexen] and create JBlood or so, but I have no idea what is going on there right now, if I find out more, I will post. As for Duke Nukem, the GL port may get finished and it may not. As for Shadow Warrior, I doubt anybody will come along and make a Win32/DirectX/ or OpenGL port for it. You can still play these if you use a Win9x startup disk and still have a FAT32 partition, you'll need DOS sound drivers to get sound for them. Or you can play them in XP without sound. Or try that VDMSound emulation sound hack or SoundFX 2000. VDM Sound: http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound/ SoundFX 2000: http://www.softsystem.co.uk/page4.htm Oh by the way, the J-Series ports have a new homepage at http://www.doomsdayhq.com great new page and I think he just released a new version of the unified release which has all 3 ports in one .exe file. -
Anybody have this combination? If you do does the fog work in the game. Alot of older ATI hardware had problems with implementing fog into games especially High Stakes.
-
I was using a GF2MX before so I always had good fog support, but hey the Radeon was cheap so I said what the heck, turned out to be a good investment, the only 2 problems I have had were with NFS: High Stakes and no fog, but that is now fixed. The other was with Unreal 1, it wouldn't load with Direct3D so I downloaded a user made OpenGL patch, from www.oldunreal.com works good with GeForce series cards too and is faster than D3D.
-
Fog does work on the Radeon 8500. I have a Radeon 8500 LE 128 meg built by ATI, and all you need is this simple fix. Using the 6.13.10.6094 Catalyst 2.1 drivers. http://www.geocities.com/ziyadhosein/radeon.htm Or if you have NFS: Porsche Unleashed just use its d3da.dll file and dump it into your NFS: High Stakes folder and presto, enable fog in High Stakes and see the graphical facelift and improved frame rates.

Anybody know of any good MP3 playing software besides Winamp or Sonique, and Windows Media Player?

Can anyone recommend a good force feedback gamepad with 6-buttons and 2 trigger buttons? I want one for some racing games like Need For Speed High Stakes. I was thinking of the Wingman Rumble Pad by Logitech.

Ok guys here is the deal, I have a Western Digital 80GB 7200 RPM drive configured as 4 20GB FAT32 partitions. I had Windows 98 SE installed on C:, and Windows 2000 Pro SP2 on D:, E: and F: are just room for programs and stuff. I recently received my Maxtor 20GB 7200 RPM back from RMA and it works fine now, I put it in the system and partitioned it into 2 10GB FAT32 partitions. When I start Win2k it reports the drive as 1 8 GB partition with letter I:, G: and H: are CD drives. If I boot Win98 it detects the drive and reports as drive D: as the first 10 GB partition of the Maxtor and moves the rest of the WDC drive letters over and then dumps the second partition as drive H: after the Western Digital partitions. How do I make Windows 2000 detect the entire contents of my drive? Win98 system: C: WD Partition 1, 20 G D: Maxtor Partition 1, 10 G E: WD Partition 2, 20 G F: WD Partition 3, 20 G G: WD Partition 4, 20 G H: Maxtor Partition 2, 10G I: LG CD-ROM J: LG CD-RW Win2000 system: C: WD Partition 1, 20 G D: WD Partition 2, 20 G E: WD Partition 3, 20 G F: WD Partition 4, 20 G G: LG CD-ROM H: LG CD-RW I: Maxtor Partition 1, only 8 GB, nothing else, other 12 GB missing. Win98 installed to C:\Windows, Windows 2000 to D:\Winnt

I figured it out, pretty simple solution too.

I don't think the Live 5.1 drivers work with normal live, I am not 100 % sure on this though.

Sure I'll try it send it here Alec, pmistry_@go.com

Quote: I kind of like the idea that I dont have to install any drivers to use the advanced features of my Microsoft mice in XP, can all Logitech owners say the same thing about thier Mice? Let's see Microsoft OS, Microsoft mouse, yeah you probably won't need drivers since MS would incorporate their own drivers with the OS. As for Logitech mice only generic support is provided. If we were running a Logitech OS then it would be the other way around.

Fujitsu was also experimenting with 10 000 RPM IDE drives, but they too suffered with heat issues.

I hate my Sound Blaster Live! its nothing but grief now, crackling, popping, you all know what the SB Live! can be like. Especially me with a VIA Chipset. (KX133) So, I want a new card, it should support all of those 3D APIs and have 4 speaker output. I don't want any of that LiveDrive or Breakout Box crap. Just a simple sound card to play MP3's and games with. Oh and no Creative cards. Opinions on these 2: Hercules Fortissimo II and Hercules Gamesurround Muse XL, the Muse XL is cheap and looks like it could get the job done for me, anybody have this card?
-
That's a good idea Alien, thanks, I'll email tech support and see.
-
More audigy feedback people, I really am considering it as an alternative to the Fortissimo II.
-
Just bought a Logitech 2-button Wheel Optical Mouse, works great with games, and no stupid ball to get dirty. It is not wireless though, but I prefer not to deal with batteries.
-
I know I said no Creative cards, but how is the Audigy? I take a performance hit with my Live and 3D sound, how well does the Audigy do 3D sound? How about the audio quality? And what about VIA?
-
With my old Geforce2 MX, the Nvidia drivers tab had a Digital Vibrance Control setting which made the colors look more richer. Is there a similar utility available [shareware or freeware] that can enrich colors for your desktop with other video cards like ATI?
-
Anybody give SOF 2 a spin yet? I've been fiddling with the demo, mine has no gore, seems like a wild gunfight type FPS which isn't so bad, sometimes less thinking and more problem solving with guns is better.

The graphics are decent at best, some of the textures really lack any sort of polish too them, they are just so plain looking. For example, Vergara's Mansion, wall textures look so plain and white. Cars and other objects have really blocky looks to them. Like the wheels. Medal of Honor had better vehicle models. As did RTCW. However some levels like the jungle are just fantastic. But these fantastic graphics are few and far between. I am running a Radeon 8500, full Anisoptropic Filtering, 32-bit color, HQ textures, 800x600 resolution.
-
I've tried so many different drivers, default XP, updated MS drivers from Windows Update, Creative updated ones from their site, and the Windows 2000 Liveware drivers. All give same result.
-
I can't find a Canadian Retailer for the Santa Cruz, but yeah it looks like a great card. If I can't get that, I'll go with the Fortissimo II Digital Edition, 80 bucks CDN here. Yeah I really want to dump my VIA board, as you know from my recent P4 posts and chipset talk, but I need to save a few dollars first and I am waiting on some new tech in the fall.

Try this page for Generic LTWinmodem drivers for a bunch of OSes. http://www.agere.com/support/client/modem_drivers.html
