MS is kinda sneaky and full of BS sometimes....

Yes, while they do stop making PS 1 games for the PSX and then move to a PS2 there is a gigantic difference between the console world and the PC World. At least with a Playstation, in theory any game you buy made for the PS 1 will work fine with the Playstation. It is easier to develop games for a platform that doesn't change or differ from one another. Sure a PS 1 will die out after a few years so what? I still have an old 8-bit Nintendo system that I fire up every once in awhile to play old games that I have. So Sony moves on to the PS2 thats fine, at least you will have 3 years or so of good PS 2 games, and then PS3, and with backwards compatibility with old PS 1 games its still pretty good. As for the PC yes they are upgradeable but you get problems with differents chipsets, incompatibilities, and for games you probably have to upgrade some component every year to stay with the pack. Now don't get me wrong, I haven't bought a console since my Genesis and I have no intention in getting one. I like PC games but its an expensive route too. Either you upgrade your PC every few years or buy a new console, the price difference is about the same.

MS is kinda sneaky and full of BS sometimes....

I just found it odd that the promotion to upgrade came inside a bug report, that's the core of my rant. The big problem I have with MS is the fact that each new Windows OS has less "optional" components. The new XP SP1 may go towards fixing this. I sure damn hope so.

Quote: The only thing I can recommend is to try a non Micro@oft Media Player. Could you illuminate me with some possible software applications that accomplish the identical approach as demonstrated by Microsoft's ignorant packaged line of code (software)?

    CD-RW firmware version?

Interesting you should ask, if you are having problems with burning then try it, but here's my story. I just bought a new LG 32x burner about a month ago and upgraded the firmware, since then I haven't been able to burn a disc, and before the upgraded firmware I could. If it isn't broken don't fix it, in your case the firmware isn't really adding anything significant, so I would suggest you leave it as it is. I am happy I got my burner replaced since it was under warranty by the store, now I have a good burner again. I think the flash wasn't official either for me so that may have attributed to the drive's failure. Since your firmware is official you may be better off, but like I said, do you really need it?

    CD-RW firmware version?

Yeah sorry about that, only Win9x has the settings tab, your CD Burning program will tell you, I know Nero does.
  6. That is all you get, older retail releases had a few extra ones but they won't work on the Q3 v1.2x or higher.

Windows itself will tell you, just open up Device Manager, browse to CD-ROM Drives and click settings and see.

Anybody give SOF 2 a spin yet?

Good honest input Yakkob, I have SOF 1 already. It was an ok game with some good gunfights, while playing the demo of SOF 2 it felt more or less the same. Bursar, thanks for information, I'll head there now to get the gore.

Wanna play DN3D / Shadow Warrior / Blood etc.

Instead of using the standard DOS executables consider using a "Source Port", there was a whole discussion on this before. http://www.ntcompatible.com/vb/showthread.php?threadid=18800&highlight=old+dos+games For Blood, look up Qblood, I believe the project is being worked at http://www.planetblood.com/qblood As for Shadow Warrior there is nothing. For Duke Nukem 3D there is the often mentioned GL Duke, but I have no idea how long it will take to finish it and there are no other basic Win32 ports either. Too bad these games were decent, and popular just like Doom, Hexen, Heretic, Quake and Wolfenstein, but for some reason there is no community support for them anymore, especially when you consider how many ports there are for Doom Engine Games.

    CD-R/CD-RW Media Poll

I just recently upgraded my Mitsumi 4x/4x/24x burner to an LG 32x/10x/40x burner. The first time I tried to burn a disc at 32x I got an error at 5 %, this is using Nero 5.5.8.2. I tried again and burned 3 straight discs correctly and since then haven't had a problem burning. Now my question is what kind of discs are good for 32x burning, I was using Sony 32x CD-R since the LG manual recommended them, but I suspect that the first disc was just poorly made. So what kind of media do you guys use, post your burner along as well. I think to be safe I may go back to BASF, I never had 1 coaster with those. However, all burners are different and some like other media type.

    ATA/100 vs ATA/133

I really can't see the advantage of using SCSI in a common desktop PC. I can understand their use in Workstations, and Servers, or in rigs where people are real enthusiasts, but the IDE interface has only gotten better over time, up to ATA-66 anyways. Serial ATA is just the next step up. The price is just too high for SCSI enabled hard disks and while the SCSI cards are a bit cheaper then what they used to be, they are still pricey. The money could be used for a new 7200 RPM IDE disk, video card, or RAM, or even a new motherboard. The 29160N is for mainstream PC's http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/product...Performance+PCs This thing goes for 329 bucks.....add in the premium for a SCSI hard disk, is it worth it?

    ATA/100 vs ATA/133

Thanks for the link there Dirty Harry. Serial ATA seems just to be an improved IDE interface with more SCSI like transfers.

    Memory Tweak

Saw this over at PCStats.com http://www.pcstats.com For Win98/ME users, there is quick way to boost overall system performance with just a few clicks of the mouse and taps of the keyboard! First click the Start menu then select the Run option. Inside the box type sysedit and press enter. Press enter and you will see quite a few windows open in the System Configuration Editor. Select the SYSTEM.INI window and from there scroll down to the [386enh] section and add this line under that header; Conservative Swapfile Usage=1 (with NO spaces between the words). Save the changes and then reboot the computer. What this little tweak does is force Windows 98/ME to use up all the physical RAM first before accessing the swapfile on the hard drive. With this small tweak done you should notice that all your programs have a little more zip in them! =) Source: http://www.pcstats.com

    ATA/100 vs ATA/133

I read somewhere that Fujitsu has successfully implemented 10000 RPM IDE disks, just haven't marketed or brought it to the market yet. Can anyone validate this?

    Know any good Win9x forums?

NVnews.net has a good OS section. As does NT Compatible right here. Honestly I have never come across any 9x exclusive forums simply because everything usually works well with 9x [no compatibility issues with hardware, games, and software], only gripes come in system crashes.

    ATA/100 vs ATA/133

Doesn't PCI max out at 133 MB/S? I just find it very hard for any device to really burst that fast, and right now I am using my ATA-100 disk on a ATA-66 compatible motherboard and there is no difference in real world performance in HD Tach results, only the head room for burst mode is higher in ATA-100. BTW, what will Serial ATA bring to the table? Will we still be able to use existing ATA-33/66/100/133 hard disks and UDMA33 and PIO Mode CD/DVD/CD-RW drives? Will there still be master/slave combinations or will it be like SCSI?

    ASUS A7V333 - Maxtor 160 GB & NT 4.0

Hey Dale, how is that Asus A7V333? I noticed that this is one of the only boards loaded with so many good features like optional RAID, but firewire, ATA133, and USB 2.0, how well does it perform? Is it stable?

    Best Media Player for XP?

I'm a big fan of the MOD PLUG PLAYER, I wish it supported MP3 files. For normal MP3 playing Winamp is lean, and mean. For videos I just use Media Player, but I rarely watch videos.
  24. XP Pro since it'll give you less hassle with older games.

    Upgrading plan !

As for VIA Chipsets go, some people have major issues with them, but sometimes people blame the chipset when actually something else is at fault. There is nothing wrong with my VIA chipset on an AMD processor, it works fine. It took a while for VIA and MS to stabilize it under Windows 2000, but after SP1 it was all good. As for Windows XP right now, I am not using any VIA 4-In-1's it runs fine without them, older VIA chipsets are better left untouched. General rule, don't update unless you have problems. Do you really need the latest VIA 4-In-1's?
