I'm not entirely sure about 8-bit palletted support Admiral. Try asking at http://www.rageunderground.com or http://www.rage3d.com all I know is that my Rage Pro and Rage 128 Pro didn't have it and the original Radeon core didn't either.

Ah yes, Deus Ex 2 will use that brand spanking new Unreal engine. man I can't fuc$king wait for this title.

When you reinstalled UT, did you delete your UT directory afterward?, you might have some configuration files which would be more optimized for TNT. When you uninstall UT it leaves the config files alone sometimes, and then when you reinstall and load up again the config files are already there again. Try installing to a different directory like C:\Ut or whatever else instead of the default path. Try running the game in OpenGL and also try patching to the latest version if you haven't done so yet.

8-bit palletted support in all ATI cards is pretty much non-existent. As for my fog question apparently there is some hack out there that modifies the registry to point from Z-buffering FOG to W-buffering FOG. Search the forums of http://www.rageunderground.com for NFS in the Radeon section.

Definitely, all developers recently have used GeForce class video cards in their development machines. Although I am sure they have put in Radeon boards too, but Matrox is a bit out of the loop here and will need to really make a big splash to win back fans and win over Nvidia users.

Quote: Tis a shame when good hardware gets wasted by bad drivers. Yeah like the ATI Rage Pro and Rage 128. Anyways, this new Matrox product looks impressive, I was a big fan of the Millennium line and my uncle use to own a Mystique, some fine 2D imagery and color quality there.

After detonator 23.11, polygon performance nose-dives
pmistry replied to Gambler FEX online's topic in Games
I guess everyone's mileage varies, for me 23.11 works the best with my GF2MX, anything after that is just crap for me. Go with what works best, but you can't deny that future driver releases will do squat for older chipsets. Forget using 2x.xx detonator's with TNT2 and the Geforce 1 and 2 cores are getting there. -
Is gaming important to you? If yes, go GeForce4. Is gaming slightly important to you? If yes, go GeForce 4. Video and workstation work? ATI.

The 23.11 det's are probably the best for GF2 and 3 cards. Newer ones are more optimized for GF4. -
some older video cards just don't need an irq

If you have an SiS chipset based motherboard please comment on model, processor, stability, and how XP runs on it.

The official Windows 2000 Application Compatibility Update adds a fix for both Need For Speed 3: Hot Pursuit and Need For Speed 2 SE. http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/tools/appcompat/default.asp In the list you will see both NFS3 and NFS2SE. However, no NFS High Stakes. After applying this patch I had no issues with NFS3 at all. I had to fiddle around with High Stakes alot to get working under 2000, the only way I could get it was to follow the method here at NTCompatible and by adding -d3d1 to the shortcut. XP installs and runs both games fine with no problems.
-
Thanks for the clearup DOSFreak and Admiral LSD. I was always pissed at MS for not incorporating an official fix for High Stakes into 2K, they did both NFS2SE and NFS3 but not High Stakes. Damn MS were like ignorant sluts.

Quote: I would like to stress again that the compatibility in 2K is EXACTLY THE SAME as in XP. It's just the pretty shortcut interfaces that make it seem different, and the XP new GUI that makes it slighly different. That's why I'm working on porting XP compatibility patches to 2K but it takes a very long time for one guy. That's what I figured that since the 2 OSes are identical pretty much. Does this mean I can install High Stakes on 2K without fiddling? Sound in DOS?

What is the best FTP client out there? CuteFTP Pro, Flash FXP, Bullet Proof, Winsock, FTP Voyager, etc, etc. there are so many little programs which one do you use?
-
I give XP handling of games much more praise than Windows 2000. Even though Windows 2000 wasn't intended for games, its great to see Windows XP handle Need For Speed High Stakes without a hitch, or even run laggy sound in DOS games.

If I get an ATX 12v PSU can I use that with an Athlon motherboard. I am thinking you just don't use the 12v connector right? I want to upgrade the PSU on my Athlon to a P4 one so I can add a P4 motherboard later.

NIC's based on or from these manufacturers are good IMO, Belkin [Realtek chipset], Intel, 3Com, Realtek, and Linksys. I have a D-Link which I don't really like [i don't know why] but seems to work just fine. Be wary of Cnet, Cicero, and Netgear, man Netgear are problematic.
-
Thanks for the quick information, and Palos, the P4B266 is the one I am considering looks really great.
-
The option during install is present, you just need to select "I want to choose the installation partition during setup or something similar and you can modify the default WINNT folder. I believe you get this if you install clean from Windows 9x for a dual boot.

Asus is my pick, next would be MSI and then Abit. ECS, FIC, DFI, and Gigabyte, I try to stay away from these. I can't comment on these though AOpen, and Tyan. I get put off by Soyo because the price is cheap, but apparently they reliable, my friend has one with a Duron 850 running in one, no problems at all.

Quote: Im going to have to go with FlashFXP too. No other FTP client will do FXP. Smart FTP I believe has FXP support.

I'm in the market for a new video board, I like the Ti4200 so far, even though it isn't out, thought I would post a poll to see what everyone here is after. I am sort of sensitive to the cost, but will save for Ti4400 or Ti4600 if they are better value, but I think the Ti4400 or 4200 is more than enough compared to the 4600.
-
Yep, I was searching around and found smart ftp and yes indeed I like it. Not bloated like CuteFTP and less hectic looking than Bullet Proof. I tried Flash FXP but it wasn't stable when I tried to download 2 files. FTP Voyager was OK but not free, WS_FTP_LE seems old.

I am looking around now to upgrade as well. Currently I am thinking of either P4 1.6 or 1.8 Northwood on either Asus P4T-E with 512 MB RDRAM or Asus P4S333 with 512 PC2700 DDR. This would be a nice basic desktop system for personal use basically gaming and MS office applications and some Macromedia Dreamweaver and Paintshop Pro.
