I am sure I could back up the system.dat, user.dat, and ntuser.dat files to a disk or a place on the hard disk. I know of system restore, but sometimes when you just can't boot into Windows [even safe mode], you can repair an installation by booting the CD and selecting the fact you have a repair disk.

Technically you shouldn't have a problem with 16-bit Windows apps in XP or NT. I am running Encarta 95 still, and its a 16-bit app. The problem may be due to incorrect win.in and system.ini entries. Ah I remember those, you'll have to consult your documentation with Corel 4, other than that there isn't much anyone can do here. If you wanna work with some JPG or GIF or BMP images you can use Windows Paint, if you are working with Corel Draw files, there may be some shareware programs over on download.com that can import it for ya. Good luck.

Isn't Corel 4 a 16-bit Windows app? I think it may be time to move up to a 32-bit version or try reinstalling it if you haven't done so.

Do you think Win2k will ever get a fourth service pack. Lets place bets now. I think Win2k is pretty stable now at SP2. So I think SP3 could be the last.

Anybody here have an SiS 645 chipset based motherboard? I want some feedback concerning performance, and compatibility.

I am considering Intel or SiS chipset next time around. Too many quirks with VIA unless they can get something going.

Preacher, you must be one hell of a FPS player if you beat it on Death Incarnate, man I am playing on medium [bring em on] and still suffering. The game is quite challenging, just like Kingpin. Obvious since they were both made by the same people. I find it cheap at times, but overall it is a decent game. I am not a big fan of the multiplayer component. I like DM no Team stuff. Anyways, for the hardest game ever just try playing Shogo: Mobile Armor Divison, man you get killed the instant you turn a corner. If you can beat that on Hard, I salute you! BladeRunner, Wolfenstein is more or less the same romp as other FPS. Like Nolf, Quake2, Kingpin, etc. I think the allure of Wolfenstein is in the name [people been waiting for a sequel for a long time] and nothing else.

Ah yes, the dreaded memory leak problem of NFS PU and Windows 2000. Happens mostly if you have SP2. Check here for possible solutions. http://www.ntcompatible.com/n.shtml One of them is to delete the gimme.dll and try to run it. The other is to reconfigure the swap file. The way I got it to run was to uninstall SP2 go back to SP1, install it and run it, if it works update back to SP2 and it should continue to run.

XP = eXtra Problems? XP = eXceptionally good? ME = Money Extortion? ME = Memory Eater? ME = Mostly Excellent? Everyone has their opinion of an MS product, here is mine. MS is just MORE SH1T!

Antoine de Rorthais, Yes I do think it is advisable to update to Creative's drivers. I had no problems with them at all and AudioHQ and Surround Mixer are bundled with the drivers. The only useful applications from the Live! Packages. The drivers gave me much fewer headaches than the other XP ones or the updated ones on MS's site.

Thanks for the tip. -
Lately alot of my programs have stopped running correctly. I double clicked Quake3 the other day, and it gave me a message saying invalid Win32 application. So I recopied the .exe file and patched it up again and it worked. No harm done, but strange. Today I tried to launch MSN Messenger and got an invalid Win32 app, then I tried Soldier of Fortune and got invalid app, I then booted into WinME and they worked fine. I am running Win2k SP2, I am reinstalling SP2 right now to see if it fixes and will scan for viruses later but any other ideas?

Ah ha! W95.Spaces.1445 virus and there are loads of them everywhere, must've happened when I was using WinME and working with some downloaded programs. Blasted Kazaa.

For the old DOS gamers: OpenGL ports of CLASSICS!

There is GL Duke but you can't do much yet, but its been like that for years now. When it comes to Duke Nukem everything seems to take...........forever. he he he [insert evil grin here] -
I wanted to know if you guys are getting pretty much the same performance in games with both OSes. List off some games, and tell me your RAM, CPU, Sound, and Video Card combination. How many of you get better performance in XP? Less performance? or Identical? I get worse.

Yes it is possible to upgrade a WinME install to Win2000. I know because I have done it before. I did this just to see what would happen. When you pop the Win2k CD in on a WinME system it will ask you if you wanna upgrade, click yes and off it goes. No need to do anything else really. I think Win2k will treat as 98. However, once you boot Win2k you will notice a lot of QUIRKS! For one the taskbar properties will have all of Win2k's customization options as well as all of WinMe's. Yes there are lots of duplicate options. The "Effects" tab in Display is completely messed up with all of the icons named differently. [The recycle bins were named My Network Places]. Most of the shell icons are screwed as well due to lack of knowledge of Winme system files. Control Panel on start menu, is a paper document. Some other problems include less stability [the system crashed a lot], and some filenames were truncated to DOS names, and some programs pointed to wrong .dll files. It works but it isn't recommended. If you are going to update, uninstall all updated drivers, use default WinME drivers, uninstall some Win9x dependent software, and hope.

Wasn't Microsoft's Fury3 based off of Terminal Velocity too? -
Most 3dfx fan sites are gone now, I doubt you will find any. Sorry.

What's with the Windows Halted or protection error?
pmistry replied to lil bill's topic in Legacy OS
You must have installed something incorrectly. Whatever was the last thing that you installed before you got these problems is probably the culprit. Boot into Safe Mode and work from there, uninstall the program if you can't figure it out, reinstall Windows over top of your existing install. -
Try the method for 98 under ME, the 2 OSes are nearly identical. WinME is Win98 Third Edition or Windows 95 Sixth Edition

Win9x doesn't suck. When used lightly as a home OS it is just fine, and it runs games well too! Honestly I think WinME is better than 98 and 98 better than 95, especially when using a VIA chipset. I don't know why but with a VIA chipset, 6 PCs I know ran so much better with ME than 98. On Intel/AMD sets 98 ran better, I think it was just Microsoft's crappy support VIA in 98. 95 was good when it came out, better than 3.1/DOS/OS2 and NT 3.51. Its time is gone now with XP's release, but ME will still be hanging around for a least 1 more year, maybe 2. Microsoft will retire ME and 2000 at the same time. BTW, most people will say Win9x sucks but this being an NT BUFF forum, that doesn't surprise me

True every device needs a driver. But usually CPU drivers and the like are bundled with the OS and updated through service packs its not like installing a detonator driver.
-
I used the 7.58 detontaors for the longest time, don't know why but Deus Ex in 32-bit color under Win2k it was pretty damn fast with those drivers. I use 21.83 now.
