Problems on T-bird system after fresh format and install of
pmistry replied to pr-man's topic in Hardware
ATA100 devices use the so "called" ATA 66 cables. The ATA66 cables have a higher pin count and can drive speeds higher than 66. -
Forgot to mention this worked on another system not mine, the card was a Soundblaster AWE64, my SB Live exhibits similar problems with laggy sound, but the sound does work.
-
It worked okay for me, use more conservative settings for build engine games, try 8-bit sound, 22khz output, soundblaster 1.0 ro 2.0 for compatibility, and general midi, if general midi doesn't work try FM instead.
-
impressive, wish I could get that

I was running Q3 natively by double clicking it in Explorer or off of the start menu. Mouse lag is there and very annoying. I want to run XP solely and not put up with a dual boot anymore, but these little quirks are preventing, hopefully a fix or an acknowledgement from MS or a mouse vendor can clear this issue up.

Ok, I have checked all my games in the database here at NT Compatible, and now I want some feedback first hand from you guys, here are some games that I am unsure of: Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed, High Stakes, Hot Pursuit and 2 SE Rune [PC Gamer says it won't work, but it runs fine under 2000 for me] No One Lives Forever Jedi Knight Wheel of Time Max Payne Blood 2 and Shogo Red Faction Soldier of Fortune I am pretty much assuming that games like Quake 3, Quake 2, UT, etc, games off of Quake2/3 engines like Elite Force, Kingpin, Sin, Heretic 2, Alice all work as expected.

Those who use 9x, use it for compatibility and overall performance, not everyone needs NT. I find that Win2k has great performance, and stability, but compatibility can be bothersome sometimes...not always. I find that Win9x has great performance and compatibility but can strike out on stability sometimes...not always. I started to use WinXP and for me I am gonna wait until some newer drivers are released for my hardware. Especially my Linksys Network USB Adapter. Right now it has good compatibility and stability but its performance is crap, I have that mouse lag in games, AGP fast writes are disabled in all Nvidia drivers above 2x.xx. And the OS seems sluggish at running games and browsing the net, but its pretty snappy otherwise, I also sblive troubles until I got ahold of those new Creative drivers. I am running an Athlon 750 with a 32 meg Geforce2, and 512 Megs of RAM. I dual ME/2000, the compromise right now. ME is there for compatibility problems in Win2k, which right now is nothing, but I still won't ditch it right away.

For the old DOS gamers: OpenGL ports of CLASSICS!

LOL. I forgot about that Quake port, that port is far better than the original GL Quake, its not so dark...I played both Quake Mission Packs with that port and it was great. -
I finally got Windows XP and 2000 to enable DMA for my CD-ROMs. In Win9x all you have to is check DMA, in Win2k/XP you have to ensure that "DMA if Available" is selected, however, some of us VIA users still get PIO modes even with this on. I believe the best option to get DMA is simply to update your BIOS and hope for the best. I updated my Asus K7V 1007 BIOS to 1008 D Beta and WinXP set DMA mode, before I was stuck with PIO mode the whole time.

Are fastwrites enabled with these? -
I have this exact same problem and it is one of the only reason I have WinME still lying around. I use a PS/2 mouse, generic brand, no problems turing in WinME or Win2k, in XP even with a ping of 50 I feel like I am playing on a 150 server.

WCPUID reports that AGP Fast Writes are enabled in the BIOS but disabled currently in the OS, which I don't understand why. It is enabled in the BIOS. I didn't have this problem under Windows 2000 or ME, I am using Hercules 21.81 detonators with my Hercules 3D Prophet 2 MX. I have a VIA KX133 motherboard, and the card is utilizing AGP 4x. The only way I can enable fast writes is by using the Hercules Tweaker program. But when I restart Windows, Fast Writes are disabled again.
-
Thanks for the information, it was driving me nuts. I installed my Hercules 14.10 drivers under XP and Fast Writes are working. Interestlingly enought the default MS drivers for XP have fast writes enabled too.

I know upgrading WinME to XP Pro is bad, I did 98 to 2000 once and it was bad. I will wipe clean later and use NTFS, right now running an upgraded WinME on FAT32 to XP Pro. Just need some questions cleared. I learned that using the new SB Live drivers can cause problems, will stick with XP Default. What the hell is wrong with the Nvidia detonators? I installed the 21.81 drivers from Hercules and when I check the driver version information, my Direct Draw and Resource Manager never get updated from v4.13.01.2181 while the rest are 5.13.01.2181??? I uninstalled the Hercules drivers and put the Nvidia 21.83 and the same thing all the other components read 5.13.01.2183 except the Direct Draw and Resource Manager, is this supposed to happen?????????????? I am getting a slow framerate inside Need For Speed High Stakes my testing of DirectDraw and Direct3D. Also when I enable a 16-bit desktop color, all the icons look like Win95 16-color icons. In 32-bit all the icons look better. And what is the problem with VIA chipsets and DMA, I have a VIA KX133, and WinXP won't enable DMA for my CD-ROMs unless it is enabled in the BIOS, just like Win2k, is there any way to have [AUTO] for CDROM in the BIOS and have WinXP enable DMA? I used the VIA 4.35 drivers but no luck.
-
Well I wiped clean and most things seem to be running a HECK of a lot better now.
-
I tried playing Deus Ex, and the sound wouldn't work correctly unless under DirectX Diagnostics I put the slider down to BASIC Acceleration. I am using the native XP drivers. How well does XP work with LiveWare 3 with Win2k, I have it on a backup CD? What about that 9 meg driver update over at Creative?
-
I snared those drivers and my distorted sound disappeared so I'm happy with that now, I have moved the slider back to Full Acceleration.

Alot of people get confused over the names of some of the ports: DoomGL, GLHeretic, and GLHexen are outdated ports that were basically first attempts in the field. They were good but only on 3dfx hardware, and didn't offer much in terms of options. JDoom/JHeretic/JHexen are FAR Superior [they support GL AND DIRECT3D with equal quality, pick the one your card likes best] , they absolutely rock and have Quake style options and menu screens and multiplayer setups. NewWolf is probably the best WolfGL port. ZdoomGL is a GL version of Zdoom, which is required for some WADS. There is also Doom Legacy which has some GL functionality too. Oh by the way, I recommend that you guys check NewHexen http://www.raven-games.com/hosted/newhexen/ This port for HEXEN 2, yes Hexen 2, adds some fog, incorporates the Demoness character into normal Hexen 2, so if you don't own the Mission Pack you can still use her in normal Hexen 2 with this port. This port is also a base for a future community mission pack. -
I believe Duke Nukem Forever has a problem. I mean come on this game was supposted to come out in 1997, based on the Quake 2 engine, then switched to Unreal engine and now UT engine. Are you guys getting tired of it? Do you still care about DNF? Do you think the guys at 3D Realms can really bring out a game that no one has played before? Do you think they are trying to incorporate every possible feature into DNF? I mean since Red Faction came out is destructible terrain going in the game? Does this game still exist? So many questions, I have said this before but who would have thought that a Wolfenstein follow up, and who would have thought that Doom 3, Deus Ex 2, Thief 3, Quake 4, Soldier of Fortune 2, and a third Dark Forces/Jedi Knight game have the chance of beating DNF to shelves. Oh yeah Unreal 2 and Unreal Warfare are in there too. I think the character Duke has lost its appeal. My question is simple, when do you think DNF will be released?
