    Nero 5.5 Issues

Run setup from the VIA service pack and uncheck the IDE driver box.

    Nero 5.5 Issues

The problem may have been due to the VIA drivers, I have since defaulted to MS's default IDE drivers and the burns are coming along nicely.

Need for speed 3 and 4 and Half-life

It just makes NFS3 take advantage of DX6 features, which are present/compatible in DX7 and DX8.

Need for speed 3 and 4 and Half-life

I remember helping someone over at NVnews.net here is what I replied to them. "I don't think NFS 3 supports 32-bit color anyway. As for the GF3 showing up as Direct 3D Device 1 it won't because NFS 3 supports only Direct X5 and thus the game won't pick up the card but will still work with it. There was a patch for NFS 3 that made it work with Direct X 6, I think you can get here: http://www.glideunderground.com/GU_Files.asp It may let you get up to 1024. In any case the performance is WAY better with DX6."

    Nero 5.5 Issues

I am currently using the VIA 4-In-1 v4.32 drivers but I elected to install the Vendor support driver. Now I heard that these are no good and have decided to uninstall them and revert back to the Standard MS drivers, and just leave the IRQ and AGP drivers installed. How do I check to see if they are really gone? I am gonna do a few new test burns with Nero 5.5 today. My hard disk is speedy enough it is a Maxtor 7200 RPM drive capable of ATA 100 but my Mobo only gets up to ATA 66, it also has a 2MB buffer. Lately I noticed that multitasking with large CD copying is real choppy with Win2k and I have 512 megs of RAM. When I tried to copy a 400 MB file off a CD to the hard disk it was painfully slow to browse the web at the same time. I think this was due to the VIA drivers again. But I not sure. My CD drive is OLD though [12x Panasonic] so it may not be best suited for fast/large transfers, but my CD drive is on a separate channel from the hard disk. Can anyone help me with these ideas? Here is my Sys Info: Windows 2000 Professional with SP2, on FAT32, on drive D partition Windows 98 v4.10.1998 [non SE version] on FAT32, on drive C partition Maxtor 20GB 7200 RPM hard disk using ATA 66, primary channel AMD Athlon SLOT-A 750 MHZ, on Asus K7V with BIOS 1007, and 512 MB PC133 memory Panasonic 12x CD, and Mitsumi CDRW, on secondary channel VIA 4-in-1 v4.32 GeForce2 MX / 32mb with 12.41 Official Dets. Direct X 8 Sound Blaster Live Player 1024 with Liveware 3

  7. at least with Win2k you won't have to reboot too much, I mean with WinME you probably rebooted a couple of times a day!

    System Fonts

Is there anyway inside Win95/98/ME/NT/2000 to change the default font for dialog box and Control Panel boxes, etc, you know the fonts that do not appear in title bars or on a icon or as a tool tip, for example go to device manager and look at the text, it is in default MS Sans Serif, I hate this stupid default can I change it?

    System Fonts

I know but that only changes the fonts on bars and stuff, not text inside boxes and stuff. Like in Device Manager or the text you see when you go to the Run box.

    Win95 to WinXP not possible?

I don't know why this pisses me off, but I think Microsoft is arrogant and ignorant for dropping Win95 from the upgrade path to Windows XP. Windows 95 still has a huge install base, and a lot of small businesses still use it. Many of those PCs still have decent Pentium II processors and 128 to 256 megs of RAM. Plus Windows 95B and Windows 95C both are essentially Win98. Also I am pissed that they dropped NT4 from the upgrade path, NT4 is in the same boat as Windows 95. I just think Microsoft is just plain annoying when they do things like this, forcing people to buy a full copy of WinXP over an upgrade release. In my opinion Windows ME's sole purpose is to generate more money. Windows 2000 should have been WinXP in the first place. Windows 98 was just Win95 with all the bug fixes, etc. WinXP is the OS we've all been waiting for and have wanted for since Windows 95!

    Win95 to WinXP not possible?

I contacted the web site that posted the fact that NT4 wouldn't be upgradeable to XP, and he says he made a mistake and that it should have said NT 3.51. Sorry about that one. As for Win95, MS said they are discontinuing support of 95 at the end of this year so let's leave it at that.
  17. Is it possible to get this sucker working! I tried the apcompat.exe, nope setup.exe has generated errors, the same with the Win2k App kit. I just tried the WinXP Appkit that I got from the Freedrive, still got the same result. Tried following that patch suggestion in the index section of this website, it installed the game and got it running once, after that it would refuse to start again, and setup.exe wouldn't work after that. I checked that appfix.exe file and ran it, this supposedly had that NFS4 fix but MS never released it, still got the same result. This is the only f$%#$%$#% game that won't run under Win2k, and I am beginning to think that MS may not release another compatibility update, let alone one to solve High Stakes. This has got to be the most finnicky game out there. To any of you who got High Stakes working please tell me how you did it or just plain brag by replying cuz you are all lucky.

    Win95 to WinXP not possible?

First let me clear up some misunderstandings, I use Windows 2000 Pro on an Athlon Box. I don't use Win95, and I haven't used it since 1998. All I am saying is that there are some businesses that still run NT4 on Celerons, Pentium II and III's since many of these businesses have decided to skip 2000, even on MS's site those companies are encouraged that they should skip 2000 now and wait for XP. But they will have to install a new release instead of upgrade copies, etc. When they realize the cost of moving NT4 to XP, they may decide to move to 2000 instead but then later may need to go to XP. More money being thrown around. As for Win95, sure maybe a lot of people don't use it much anymore, but Windows 98 and Millennium are built from it, I can understand that Win95 or Win95a upgrades are not possible since they are ancient OSes, but what about 95B or 95C, those OSes have USB and AGP support [granted it is patched in 95 B] and many people with P2 or P3 CPUS may still be using Win95, many of them probably decided not to buy [Or borrow and burn]a useless copy of Win98 or WinME, realizing that it is the same thing as Win95, which they are. Just load IE on top of 95 and bang you have 98. Even MS didn't release Windows Media Player 7 for Win95 or NT4, but all the other OSes seemed fine. I really would like to know why Win95 is so drastically different compared to 98 or ME. As for a Win95 user wanting to update to XP, what is wrong with that? Some people don't need NT.....yeah everyone gloats about how great 2000 is, but some people / families use a computer for just surfing the net or using MS Office, I would assume with Microsoft's advertising, that it will most definitely be geared towards families, and with that many families may wish to get XP. Not all people are tech savvy like us and many of them wouldn't even have thought of borrowing 98 to update 95 first. So EddiE314 I don't understand why you were so brash about it when I brought it up, I just think MS is very tactful in how they plan their upgrades, and since XP is built from NT, 98 and ME upgrades are gonna suck just like it was under 2k, and most people don't have the smarts to format and start fresh like we can. But who knows? Maybe when XP comes out, it upgrade 95 even if it doesn't say so on the box?
  20. Is it possible to see a Network activity icon in the system tray for a cable modem connection inside WinME? Kind of like it is in Win2k or when you use a dial up ISP.

If you suspect that the Video drivers are wrong, use Nvidia's reference drivers, they do support TNT, up to driver release 7.xx, I think. I heard that the 6.18 detonators were decent for TNT. Or try posting at nvnews.net, they'll help you out.

Inside the Quake folder, delete this file. Opengl32.dll. This file is GL ICD for 3dfx cards, since you got a GeForce2MX you don't need it.

    Win95 to WinXP not possible?

I still think MS could have made it possible, seeing how Windows 2000 will upgrade it. Windows 95 was the codebase for all of the OSes from 95A to 95B to 95C to 98 to 98SE to ME. It is still possible plus NT4 is easily done to Windows 2000, why not XP?
