Unfortunately there isn't a way to easily convert a partition from NTFS back to a FAT based one. Some applications such as Partition Magic *may* have an option, but I'd make sure you have a backup of all your data before hand. If programs like PM don't have that feature, then you will need to wipe the hard disk and reinstall everything, formatting the parition as FAT32 before installing Windows 2000 again. Can you not take your laptop into a shop and ask if they can install the software onto it in order to test if it actually does work or not? If they think they will make the sale if it works might encourage them to go this little extra distance.

Last time I checked on the nVidia site, the 21.83 drivers were the official version. Why not just download them from there? I've run the 21.83s on my XP box for a while and haven't had any problems at all.

They are typically using a shrunk down solution that is more or less handheld. It's a small video conferencing unit with a screen and a camera. The uplink is made via satellite and then beamed to the news rooms. It's also quite secure so the Taliban can't listen on what's being said.

I'm looking to get started in DV, but only as a hobby. This means no really expensive toys to play with. I was looking at the Panasonic DV27 and DV28 cameras. Now, as far as I can tell, they are exactly the same apart from the the DV28 has DV in enabled, and the DV27 does not. I can get a widget to enable DV in on the DV27 for a lot less than it would cost to upgrade to the DV28 camera. I can get the DV27 for £399 and the DV28 for £520 (inc VAT). Is this a good price? It seems to be. Does anyone have any experience with either of these cameras? Can anyone confirm (or deny) that the DV in is the only difference? Final question does anyone have some good links to DV related forums. UK based ones would be nice, but as long as they are fairly busy and have some knowledgeable people in, that's all I'm really after TIA

Max Payne and Soldier of Fortune Platinum are both fine under Win XP. I didn't bother with Red Faction under it, as I wasn't very impressed by the game. I have NOLF but haven't tried it under XP yet. Maybe I'll give it a go soon, as I quite enojoyed it (apart from that stealth level inside the office complex). This is on: Epox 8K7A+ Athlon 1.2@1.4 (10x140) 256MB Crucial P2100 RAM LeadTek GF3 (Det 21.83) VideoLogic Sonic Fury IBM 60XP 40GB HDD

All that info is probably very useful, but you haven't said what the actual problem is
-
Installing the drive from WindowsUpdate probably won't do any harm, and I doubt it can make things worse. Now I know why I went for a Sonic Fury card in my new system

Yup, sure do post over on OcuK As for the pacth, you can get it from here

I played through the whole game again recently under XP, and apart from having to patch it, I didn't encounter a problem. The game played from start to finish. Maybe it's not related to your video card though. Could be something to do with the sound card. Can you change the drivers for it, or maybe pull it out and try without sound.
-
It did that to me the first time I played it as well. I installed the latest patch for the game and it then ran without problems on my GF3 with the 21.83 drivers. I didn't have to patch the game to get it working on my Win2k rig though.

Is the PC overclocked? If so, try running it at the proper speed during the install and then clock it again afterwards. I had to do this get XP installed on one of my machines.
-
No I'm not, I probably should have said that in my last post. Got a GF2U and GF3.

I think the problem is that game will fire up in a low res with a low clour depth so it runs on most hardware. People with higher specs can then increase the res and depth to what they want. Try having a nose through the registry to see if there are any keys that relate to the game. You might be able to manipulate them. There's always the .ini or .cfg (or whatever) files that games generally create in their installtion directories. This usually include the graphics settings, so you might be able to edit the files by hand to change over to 32-bit. Oh, Max Payne works in 32bit without any problems as well

I've got the 8K7A+ board and it's great. The only difference between the 8K7A and the 8K7A+ is that the + board has an onboard RAID controller. Setup is dead easy, and performance is tops. For overclocking, you set the multiplier on the board with dip switches, and the base FSB speed (100 or 133) is set with a jumper. You can then change the FSB in the BIOS. Voltages for the RAM and core are set using jumpers on the board as well. Not as easy as it could be, but not overally difficult to use. Setup under Windows 2000 was easy, just install 2K, then use the supplied CD to install the mobo drivers. WinXP is even easier. Just install XP and sets everything up. No messing with 4in1 drivers or anything (but some XP 4in1s are available from the VIA site if you fancy them). The board can suffer from a low 5v rail though, and this can limit your overclocking potential. Running my 1.2@1.4 causes the 5v line to drop to around 4.61 under load. The machine is still stable at this, but it does mean I can't clock any higher. If you have a Sparkle PSU you can adjust the pots inside it to increase the voltages. Enermax PSUs (which I have) seem to have the most voltage drop.

StarLancer is cool. Very pretty to look at and plays quite well as well. I also thought that Wing Commander Prohpecy was great as well.

It should be out by the end of November IIRC. What does that poll have to do with this question anyway?
-
Have you got another CD drive you can try? Are there any marks or scratches on the XP CD?
-
Is the machine overclocked? I found that XP wouldn't install properly when I was running my 1.2@1.4 When I clocked it back a bit to 1.3 it installed fine. I then clocked it back up to its previous settings and everything runs fine.

Quote: But you need third party software to copy music files to MP3. XP only supports WMA. So could you do this natively in 9x/ME/2k then?
-
Maybe that file hasn't been updated. Is it causing you a problem?

We've got a machine running Win2K server and IIS 5 and it's been running quite happily for a while, but it has recently developed an annoying problem. The web services are no longer working properly. When you try and view a page on the server, you get HTTP 500: Internal Server error. This happens on all pages on the server, regardless of how you try and address the server (hostname, IP address, 127.0.0.1). According to the Event Log, the IUSR_machinename account can not log on to the local machine. The properties of the IUSR user account seem fine, and if I look in the Directory Security section of the website, and select the IUSR account as the anoymous one, it says that "password synchronisation is not supported with non-local accounts" when I tick the "allow IIS to control password" box. The account is local to the machine, so I have no idea what IIS is talking about. We run a Novell network, and there are no AD/PDC/BDC servers on our network. The FTP part of the site is still running fine. The MS Knowledgebase isn't much help, and the server is fully patched. The full System Event Log message is as follows: Quote: Event Type: Warning Event Source: W3SVC Event Category: None Event ID: 100 Date: 30/10/2001 Time: 12:22:47 User: N/A Computer: name Description: The server was unable to logon the Windows NT account 'name\IUSR_name' due to the following error: Logon failure: user not allowed to log on to this computer. The data is the error code. For additional information specific to this message please visit the Microsoft Online Support site located at: http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp. Data: 0000: 31 05 00 00 1... Unfortunately the URL given above does not work. The Security Event Log shows the following: Quote: Event Type: Failure Audit Event Source: Security Event Category: Logon/Logoff Event ID: 533 Date: 30/10/2001 Time: 12:22:47 User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM Computer: name Description: Logon Failure: Reason: User not allowed to logon at this computer User Name: IUSR_name Domain: name Logon Type: 3 Logon Process: IIS Authentication Package: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0 Workstation Name: name Where I have typed name in the above log messages, it reads the machine name in the event log. I'm slightly confused with the Domain section in the security log, as the machine is actually part of a workgroup (as we don't use domains). If anyone can shed some light on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Nope. Aha, one thing has come to light. Access 2000 was kind of installed on the machine on Friday. I say kind of because apparnetly the machine crashed part way through the install. It's possible that it overwrote some files during the install, but because it didn't finish properly, the machine is a bit confused. I'm going to try uninstalling IIS, deleting the IUSR account, and then reinstalling IIS. Hopefully it will reacreate the IUSR account with the required permissions.

Thanks, but most of our users are monkeys that don't know what they're doing, so I doubt they would fiddle with stuff. I have tried to instill the fear of God into them if they do, so I doubt a user has changed the settings. Most of this Policy stuff is gibberish to me. Because we only use Win2K servers for running IIS and nothing else, everything should be done on a local basis rather than using Group Policy objects which (from what I can make out) you set on the server and propogate out to users and machines. After some fiddling and rebooting, I now have a tick in both boxes of "log on locally" for the IUSR account. It still doesn't work, and the Event Log is still showing 'the user is not able to log onto the machine'. To say I'm confused is an understatement
-
Right, after some investigation, it seems as if the Log On Locally ppolicy isn't in place properly. If I look at the settings for the IUSR account, the Log on Locally box is ticked for Local Policy, but it is unticked in the Effective Policy Setting column. I think this is the cause of my problem. I just don't know how to fix it though.
