Ok then, just what soundcard is the better 3D one in W2K?
Bursar replied to Mike Zamarocy's topic in Games
Just to be awkward, I'm going to say that my SB Live is flawless. I haven't had any problems with it under Win2k. I don't generally run it with EAX turned on as my speakers don't really do it justice, and a number of games just sound 'odd' with it. EAX isn't the be all and end all of sound and I really don't feel that I'm missing anything by having it turned off. -
At last! Someone else has the same screen related problem as me! I had it with my G400MAX and now my GF2 Ultra. It only ever happens if I start a LAN game. Joining an Internet game (either using the built in server-finder or a 3rd party one like GameSpy) gives no problems. The Win2k DX7 worked fine for me in HL, as did DX8 and now DX8a. I will tell you one problem that I've had over the past few days though... Every now and then I get an error along the lines of Application popup: iexplore.exe - Application Error : The instruction at "0x013f5102" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read". I've had this once or twice on my work machine as well (which I don't use for playing games and has a different video card). I'm going to be swapping my RAM soon to see if that helps. However, when this error appears, mostly the machine drops back to Windows and displays the error dialog. On occaision though, it stays in HL, I get the mouse pointer, and have to guess where the dialog boxes are or just bash away on the keyboard using Enter, Esc, Alt-F4 in order to eventually get back to the desktop. Maybe you have some underlying problem that is causing CS to crash. Have you checked your Event Log to see if anything odd is going on at the time of the crash? [Edit - On my home machine, iexplore.exe is replaced with HL.exe when this type of crash occurs] [This message has been edited by Bursar (edited 29 January 2001).]

Same here. Good old Win2k blue for my home machine, and black for my work machine. My work machine has a G400 MAX in it and for some reason the two monitors (same make and model) run at a slightly different refresh rate which makes the secondary monitor look slightly brighter. It did my head in having two shades of what was meant to be the same colour, so I made it black instead.

http://www.geocities.com/rcwoolley/ Apologies to jdulmage for the 'gay' content of this posting.

Careful jdulmage, your last comments were tantalizingly close to revealing that you do indeed have a sense of humour!!

For gods sake, lighten up. It was meant in jest. Personally, I love Windows 2000 and try to suggest it to others where possible. I'm looking forward to Whistler and I expect to keep using their products for many years to come. If stuff like this annoys you, then why not just ignore it? You don't do yourself any favours by posting these 'that's gay and you're dumb' comments. Let it go.

Well, I can confirm that it works as my copy ran fine (I don't play it now seeing as I 'lost' my save game files during a disk formatting accident). Best bet would be to make sure you have the latest drivers for all of your hardware, including any motherboard related drivers. It'd be useful if we knew what your hardware was, as someone might then be able to say "Ah, you need patch X with that hrdware to get it to work properly."
-
It's unlikely to be a CS problem. Although I don't like the mod much, the underlying HalfLife engine is fairly stable now. I would really suggest that you go through the hardware drivers again. My GF2 Ultra runs HL and other mods (TFC, FA, FLF) without problem using the 6.31 drivers. I've just upped to the 6.50 drives for Win2k and that too runs fine. Maybe you should undo some of the registry hacks and tweaks that you've made to see if that helps the situation. Also, does it make any difference if you use OpenGL or D3D?

I need to be able to run a few applications in a specific order on a Windows NT 4 Workstation. The applications need to fire up after I log in. I was thinking about listing them in a batch file and then putting that batch file into the Startup group. Does anyone else have any other clever solutions that will cause the applications to load in the correct order?

Upgrading CPU/Memory - How will this affect Win2K Pro?
Bursar replied to RussellWild's topic in Customization & Tweaking
If you change the amount of RAM in your machine, you should also reconfigure your swap file. It should range from 1.5xRAM minimum to 2xRAM maximum. With 512MB, my swap file defaulted to 768MB minimum and 1024MB maximum. I have changed it so that it is 1024MB in both cases. This gives me a static swap file that is slightly faster than a dynamic one. -
The MS site only lists SP6a. I guess it could be in Beta but there are others here who are probably more qaulified to say if that's true or not.

It's for a server that we run where a number of applications have to run (in a set order) for the server to work properly. If any of you are familiar with the Esri ArcIMS stuff, then that's what I basically need to run. There's a Catalog application, Launcher application, Admin application and a couple of other bits that have to load in order. By putting them into the Startup folder they could load in any order (for evidence of this, check how your System Tray icons sometimes appear in a different order). I guess the same could happen if they were services. Looks like I might have to try the batch file option and just see how it pans out.

I got the email from them yesterday. It's a shame to see them go under as I get some of the best pings to their servers. Hopefully someone will come up with a rescue package. Maybe we could have a whip round in this forumn to see if we can come up with the dosh

For my Windows 2000 installation, the file is: C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton Antivirus NT\navwnt.exe This is copied straight from the DAP Virus scanner command line. If your using 9x, it's probably navw9x.exe or something similar.

If Bill Gates has declared the PC dead, then his company probably own't be far behind. What do you think MS would do if the PC industry vanished? The X-BOX would be their main consumer product if they had to stop all PC related stuff. The PC will keep going for ages. It always has ups and downs, and manufacturers are running on tighter and tighter margins, but they always seem to pull through. Internet appliances will only work if you have a logical connection between the Internet and the appliance. A Microwave that lets you send emails is pointless. A freezer that keeps track of the food you take out and can call the supermarket and have some more shopping delivered for you is more worthwhile. The All-in-one devices are similar. The ideal device is something that combines diary/address book/email/voice and has some PC connectivity as well. The problems come when people have stuff like mobile video phones. What's the point? The network isn't capable of supporting it yet, most people don't have any need for it in their homes/offices, so why would they want it whilst walking around or driving in their car? If people can combine sensible products into a new one, then they are likely to do well. Otherwise people won't bother to buy it and we'll be forever shackled to our desks.

Most of this is speculation, but what I would plan to do is to block access to Microsoft on my firewall (Home LAN, obviously). There is bound to be some snail mail way of registering the product and getting a code that will disable the 30 day timeout. This code is likely to be a lot more portable between machines (I'm hoping here that the registration form doesn't go into huge detail about your BIOS number, Hard disk serial numbers and so on). With a bit of luck that will solve all the problems of an upgrade. Failing that, I'll just use the Select version.
-
I would have been surprised if that had worked. With 512MB physical RAM, my swap file is between 768MB and 1024MB and it runs fine. It's more likely to be something to do with the VIA drivers, or some other hardware driver.

Have a look in the directory of the mod that you play (for instance Half-life\TFC) and you'll a load of .txt files where the name of the file starts with the game resolution. Open up the file that coreesponds to the res you use and you'll find all the text entries in there.

Could you tell me where the subscriber download page is please? I subscribe to TechNet Plus, and have been to the site and logged in, but I can't see any download links. Is this stuff available to TechNet Plus subscribers, or there another higher level of subscription you need in order to get access to it?

I have an 'acquired' copy of UT with the latest patch applied to it, and it runs under my Win2k Pro setup perfectly happily. It's possible that it just doesn't like another program that you have in memory. Have you tried stopping various services and unloading any programs that run on Startup? Tried killing your anti-virus software? I'd just move the whole thing over. The only thing to watch for is how your drives are connected. If you have IDE drives and both drives are on the same IDE channel, you'll probably lose some performace as IDE can only read from one device per channel at a time. Try to put the second disk on the other channel so that both can be accessed at once.

Have you got Service Pack 1 and all the compatability updates for Windows 2000? Has anyone got Dance eJay 3 running successfully under Windows 2000? I got it for Christmas, and it generally only runs for about 30 seconds before popping up a "This program has encountered an error and will be shut down". It's meant to run ok under Win2k, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I have all the updates for Windows 2000 and DE3 but it still crashes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've got the Hercules Ultra, and it kicks arse. You going to need a fairly powerful CPU to take advantage of it though. Some of the benchmarks I've seen show that on at 640x480, even a GHz CPU can't supply enough data to keep the card happy! OK, so you're likely to be 1024x768 and higher, but the card will be wasted if you don't have the MHz to back it up.
