    Hats off to FrogMaster!

Many thanks Frogmaster! Having completely failed to sort out the locale settings with Windows 2000 and Quake 2 i followed your advice and Quake 2 runs like an absolute beauty! I'd still like to know why that bloody error message came up, but anyway.... May the fragging commence! Forever in your debt, Pikey

Thief 1 - for the last time

Christ! How many video cards? I'm sorry the compatability patch didn't work, but i'm running Thief, Thief Gold and Thief 2 under Windows 2000 Pro on a 16MB Voodoo 3 with no probs at all! If you upgrade to Thief Gold (with the fantastic extra levels) and run d:\(or your relevant cd/dvd-rom letter) setup.exe- lgntforce (and don't forget the space after the dash) it runs fine. I'm not so sure how it will run under your possibly over-specced specs! Yours overwhelmed, Pikey

    Adding an O/S

Bad news i'm afraid....unless you own or are prepared to fork out for the latest version of PowerQuests Partition Magic. Only way to do this is to remove Win2000, create two partitions on your drive (preferably both FAT32 so each can read the other - it'll still work with NTFS on Win2000, but Win95 won't detect the partition). Install Win95 FIRST to the c:\ drive, then install Win2000 to d:\. Win95 may trample your Win2000 boot data if you install it after Win2000. Win2000 will assume the role of default O/S (you can change this to Win95 if you want) but you'll be able to switch between the two when the Boot Menu appears. If you're bothered about losing data to fdisk or may want to create future hassle free partitions, then i'd invest in Partition Magic. It is, quite literally, magic. Cheers PowerQuest PR Dept.

Will Win2k Gameplay always be slower?

I'll second that. What are your Half-Life symptoms? I can install it fine, but the moment the game attempts to run after entering the keycode i simply get an "Explorer generating errors" message. Strange thing is, both the Half-Life UpLink and Opposing Force demos run great. The full game just doesn't want to know at all. No problems with Thief or Thief 2, so I guess i'll survive for now.

    Any fixes for these problems?

Ok, Having a few problems with the following: 1) Tomb Raider 4: Comes up with the "Direct X limitations on NT4" message. 2) The same occurs with System Shock 2, and Thief Gold. 3) Really bizarrely I get a language incompatability message with Quake 2, this is the uk english Quake II, and the uk english Windows 2000 Professional, it still refuses to install. 4) The Voodoo 3 2000 drivers that install with Windows 2000 don't support OpenGL, so Quake 3 Arena demo will not run. 5) Driver installs and runs. But it runs very badly. Open GL, Glide and direct 3D seem to be amiss somehow. Any ideas on these problems?

    Thief I & win2k ...again

I guess that this is your second post, i've not yet searched for previous messages, but have you been to the microsoft windows 2000 compatability downloads site? There is a fix for Thief, but not the Gold version. I downloaded this, and Thief works beautifully.
  7. I presume then that I am beyond redemption here! Oh well....Windows 2000 I hereby consign you to the earth, encased in your jewel case shroud, ashes to ashes etc. Back to Windows 98 for me then!
