    battle of the computers

grr system is still too new still tweaking I'm now running Necessary Evil at 1333mhz officially(133x10), but at 1344mhzin actuality(134x10) 3dmark2000 score of 7994 I need just a bit more out of this system [This message has been edited by INFERNO2000 (edited 07 March 2001).]

    Why wast your money

In my case, I usually end up having to replace something for one reason or another. Then I get into the situation of buying cheap indentical replacement, or spending a few bucks more and replacing and upgrading? I had to buy a new motheboard for my intel system thought about it.. for 40 bucks more, if I sold my PIII800eb@950, I could buy an Asus A7V133 and 1.1 ghz Tbird(now at 1.31) I did notice a bit of a difference. I upgraded to 512mb RAM just cause I wanted a bit more, and I was getting it at a good price noticed a pretty good difference I don't upgrade to brand new unnecessary things very often. I don't have need to go out and buy a GF2 Ultra...my GTS is workign great. But if a card were to fail, I'd probably go get it if I could afford the extra price. ------------------ My PC is warm. interesting problem

I went out and bought an Abit SA6R for my PIII system. it didn't overclock to where I wanted it to(I wanted equal to or better than my CUSL2)...so I sold it to a friend. I bought an Asus A7V133 and a 1.1ghz Tbird. The BIOS edition is 1001C, the first one I'm wanting to update it, but when I try using the BIOS utility, it says it's a mismatch--and while the bios says KT133a, the BIOS chip on my board is saying KT133 any idea what's going on? It's recognized as an -a in everything else...

    interesting problem

here's what the problem was. the AsusUpdate BIOS flashing utility that came on the CD, 2.27.04, is incompatible with my motherboard. I was instructed to get 2.27.07(I didn't know a new version had been out, otherwise I'd have gotten it for my CUSL2). I tried it, and it worked. Problem solved. But why would the version that came on the CD that came with the motherboard -NOT- be compatible? That just seems kind of stupid. ------------------ My PC is warm. I think our fire wall is acting up. Flickering and crashes on VIA and Geforce2 GTS

I know this is in the XP, but I had the same problem back in August when I tried 2000 with an Asus K7V and a Classic 750 The problem was in the VIA KX133 chipset drivers... and this may be affecting you as well? That's all I can add, as I went back to intel after that....but 3 days ago I built myself a Tbird 1.1 & A7V133 mobo with a GTS and 2000...and there were no problems..in fact, the Via drivers brought my 3dmarks scores up about 83 percent. ------------------ My PC is warm. NEED IMMEDIATE RESPONSE PLEASE

Ok... I have to have an answer by 4 PM CDT, as the store closes at 5, and there's only 1 of each. I have 2 systems. A PIII 800eb@954(159mhz FSB) on an Asus CUSL2 a CeleronII 633@??? without a motherboard to go with it At the local store, I can get 1: Asus CUSL2-C for 130 2: Abit SA6R for 165 I'd go online, but I need this motherboard by Friday, and after overnight shipping, it comes to be about the same. My question is this which board should I get? Keep this in mind: 1: if I get the CUSL2-C no changes will be made. PIII 800eb will remain on the CUSL2. 2: if I get the Abit SA6R, the CUSL2 will go to the CeleronII, and the SA6R will be used in my main system(due to the RAID function), thus making it a PIII800eb@954(if it can reach it) on the Abit SA6R, and the Celeron on the CUSL2. 3: if I do number 2, I'm not sure what my overclocking ability would be. I want to remain at the current speed, if not go faster. I don't want to lose what I have right now.

    NEED IMMEDIATE RESPONSE PLEASE

I do plan on eventually getting drives to use RAID properly the sound and video, yeah, I'd rather do without. but it's not really a problem...I have it already with the CUSL2(no audio though) 40 bucks for RAID. buying a RAID card would cost me 100 bucks
  11. INFERNO2000

    NEED IMMEDIATE RESPONSE PLEASE

Well, my friend at the town where the shop is is picking up the SA6R as I type. the RAID isn't of any real use to me YET. All I have are a 15GB and a 45GB hdd-both UDMA 100/7200 rpm. so RAID won't do me any good until I get another one of the above drives(probably the 45GB as cheap as they are). Right now, my question is this: I already have a Promise Ultra100 controller, as I have more IDE devices than ports. Is there a way to turn the highpoint controller into a standard harddrive controller(NON-RAID)? It'd be great to be able to put my drives on the highpoint, NOT RAID them, put my cd-drives on my normal ports, and sell off my promise card(or trade it for some RAM). As long as the motherboard is good, and isn't the limiting factor in my overclocking, I think I'll be pretty happy.

Need some advice on a system

I'm thinking about going AMD..but I've had problems the motherboard I'm looking at is the IWILL KK266-R KT133a motherboard the CPU, not sure about...probably in the 1 ghz range--won't know until after the March 6th price drop. Also...I will be overclocking. But the rest of my system will be a GeForce2 GTS 32mb DDR SBLive(original) Trendware 4 port NIC/10/100 switch Promise Ultra 100 controller card 256mb Mushkin Rev2(highly overclockable) 2 UDMA100 drives 2 CDRW and a DVD Drive the cooling will be with an Alpha PEP66T 300W PSU too. Just wondering what problems I may run into with this I will run 2000 I will keep my nvidia card The soundcard will be kept as well Should I still look into this system, or are there still significant conflicts with the VIA chipset? My last endeavour with the AMD was a KX133 Asus K7V and a 750 classic [This message has been edited by INFERNO2000 (edited 27 February 2001).]

Rambus is suing SDRAM, DDR makers

Actually, Intel is trying to get away from RAMBUS. They're contractually obligated to go with RAMBUS...but they are developing a DDR platform for the PIII and the P4. Via will beat them to it, but intel can see the writing on the wall

Rambus is suing SDRAM, DDR makers

you don't visit hardocp very much, do you? Oh well old news, but it's still jsut as aggrevating a week or so ago, RAMBUS was caught trying to secure the patents for the sole purpose of charging people, even though they knew other companies were tyring to make an open standard oh well screw them.
  15. a product whose price is ahead of it's time or something like that I want an NV20. but I don't want to pay more for my videocard than I did for my motherboard AND CPU. my GTS is just fine right now my 256 DDR is just fine too. no need to take this jump yet...in my opinion.

Something XP will have trouble winning over users with

I bought the same keyboard as a DELL OEM. It LACKED a PS2 port. Only had the USB connection. I'm now not using ANY external legacy ports..just USB. now as for VGA, RJ45 etc...

Something XP will have trouble winning over users with

MSGUY: "ISA is trash plain and simple. ISA in its day 10 years ago was pretty good. But now we have PCI and AGP, fully PnP. ISA is slow, not plug and play, legacy, and all around a pain in the butt. I don't see why people are still hanging on to their crap hardware. Just because I have an ISA NIC doesn't mean I have to or should use it." Just wanted to comment on that...I had an ISA ATI 2000 10mb NIC that was fully plug and play, from Linux to Win9x(hell, even 95 and NT had native drivers for it). it worked great in 2000, and in XP(it was known as Whistler beta 1 back then) for the short time it was on that system. /begin uninformed/uneducated rant If you have an ISA card from way back when...and it works, then fine, use it. It's buying a *new* ISA card that isn't the best of ideas..unless you're on an old computer. As for abandoning Legacy-I look forward to it I honestly don't use the COM ports or Parallel ports, joystick ports or things like that hell, my floppy drive just blinks when I power on and off....it doesn't get used. We could all abandon legacy right now and not be too bad off. MAC did it...they're all USB and firewire now..they gave up their old ports and floppy(which is now an optional external device, I think). We here could all do it without too much of a problem, because it would allow some parts of our systems to be sped up(without the slower ISA buses to go through). That's a selling point on many motherboards without ISA. The problem is, not everyone is exactly intelligent about their computers. They don't all realize the good that can come from upgrading and abandoning legacy devices. When USB and IEEE1394 products come out in mass and are cheaper than their legacy counterparts; and companies abandon parallel, COM, PS2, etc. for USB(with hubs), we might start seeing TRUE abandonment of legacy. But don't count on it. What we need is a new evolution of computers for this to happen...something that will rip people away from old computers that don't at least have USB. That's how apple did it--they released the imac. It got rid of most if not all the legacy parts natively. Now they were accessed through USB. If you wanted to, in the same area you have for your ATX connectors, if you were to abandon COM ports and Parallel ports...you could have 4-6 more USB ports. add in the fact you can have hubs on these, and you have a lot of room for expansion. Couple this with the fact that many USB appliances come with USB hubs in them already...and you can see where this is going. But as long as people clutch their Packard Bells and hope for the best...they're impeding those of us that want to press on to bigger faster better things. /end uninformed/uneducated rant [This message has been edited by INFERNO2000 (edited 26 February 2001).]

    Nvidia Det 752's

oops, that's a good point I was only getting 115 at my resolution. I got lost in the benchmarking file and accidentally posted my score at 640x480 I run at 1024x768x32. I get 115 FPS on demo001 I tried out 1600x1200x32-the highest my monitor can support, and I got 45 FPS-still very playable my computer is a PIII 800eb@954 256MB PC133@159 2:2:2 5/7 Strong(God I love Mushkin) GeForce2 GTS running 7.52, and OCed to 230/370 Windows 2000 RC2beta, DX8a I just scored a 7218 in 3dmark2000 with ICQ, yahoo and my firewall on. I bet I could get near 8000 if I ran 98SE [This message has been edited by INFERNO2000 (edited 26 February 2001).]

    Nvidia Det 752's

they're the first Detonator 7.xx series that have really seemed decent. I lost 15 FPS in UT, but gained 10 in Quake. And since UT is still at 75(170 if I play it in a window ), and Quake3 is now at 150, I'm happy. Still...I think I'm being limited by something.. I have a bottleneck somewhere, and I don;t know where it is.

I bought a new GeForce2 GTS the other day. didn't know much about it--just said reference board OEM, yada yada yada. Well, got it in the mail yesterday, threw it in, all is well(and gave 60fps more than my GeForce256 did in some apps). (In Bruce Cambell from Army of Darkness voice) Groovy. I run Detonator drivers, so I'm fine. I'm just wondering if anyone knows how I can find out who exactly made this card(the retailers said they were unsure, and that they just get them in bulk OEM packages(Static bags and bubblewrap, baby!), just for my own knowledge. ------------------ My PC is warm. How cool should my system be

Mid 20s is great. don't worry about it I covered my PIII in it, and it was unnecessary. There IS such a thing as too much paste. I don't have any of the radioshack stuff on here necessarily, but I've used it and it's been pretty good to me... But where you're at is great.
