110 F was standard on my motherboard with 3 fans on my AMD system.... so it also depends on your CPU. Anyone can tell you that AMD chips run hotter than Intel. A delta of 10F for similar speed CPUs wouldn't surprise me at all. My PIII 800eb@954, with LOTS of cooling and an alpha, peak at 33C/90F under full load. at Idle, it's 29C/84F 100--doing good 110--a bit hot, not dangerous 120--maybe add a few fans, but still not too bad if it gets up to 130, you've got some cooling problems Also, you must take into account ambient temperature. Unfortunately, my PC is by the heater, so when the register is open, my CPU's idle was at about 88 degrees, and peaking at 94. Without it open, it peaks at 88 ------------------ My PC is warm. Statistics also show that people don't like 2K bashing on a 2K-fan board. Moron. ------------------ My PC is warm. I think our fire wall is acting up.

Ok... I have a router. It acts as a DHCP server and hardware firewall. I have ZoneAlarm Pro..a software firewall. with the router in place...what good does Zonealarm do me? ------------------ My PC is warm. I think our fire wall is acting up.

I don't use Realplayer and I'm less worried about what goes out than what can come in. Granted I've never had a trojan...(knocking on wood as I speak)but my parents have...so they're paranoid. And I won't share my router ------------------ My PC is warm. I think our fire wall is acting up.

It depends on your hub to be honest...and your computers. If you have 10mb and 100mb NICs...then a Switch would Probably be better to get a Switch....but a 10mb Hub would suffice as well. if you get a 10/100 hub, there IS the possibility the 10s won't communicate with the 100s. This is true in my Allied Telesyn 16 port hub. Also...if you don't have the money to go for a switch, and are only connecting 4 computers together....there are cards out there, such as the Trendware TE100-S4PCI (http://www.trendware.com/products/100Mbps/adapter/spec-te100s4pci.htm) that will act as both a switch and as an ethernet card. I have one of these in my PIII machine, and it works great both as an Ethernet card, and as a switch. And if you're REALLY rich....try looking at a Router such as the Netgear RT314--this acts as a switch, and as a DHCP server, to connect up to 250 computers to one internet connection(DSL/Cable/T1) on the same IP. these can cost 130 though...but it's always an option. ------------------ My PC is warm. I think our fire wall is acting up.

Took my NT4 box and fragged it, through Mandrake on there...fragged that too. Now trying to install Satan itself. FreeBSD If anyone has any experience with this...and could relate things in there to comparable aspects of 2K...it'd be greatly appreciated. Flames are good too ------------------ My PC is warm. I left Zonealarm up for a few hours after connecting to the router... usually I'd get messages saying I'd been pinged from the outside(usually the ISP) or something along those lines. nothing came through..no pings, no alerts, nothing. these IPs have been changed.... External IP(the one the router has) is 123.123.123.123 the internal IP(what my computer has when I do ipconfig) is 100.100.0.2(100.100.0.1 being the address of the router, if I were to telnet into it from within the LAN) My parents have a computer(Win98) downstairs with a different IP. How could I, from my parents computer, attempt to access my computer, just to see if I can get through the router's firewall protection? ------------------ My PC is warm. NT 4 Server and Setting up a DHCP(and proxy if necessary) se
INFERNO2000 posted a topic in Networking
Searched the board for things, and couldn't find what I was looking for, so I'll ask. Sorry if it's a repost of anything----just give me links if necessary. I got a "new" computer. P 133 24 MB RAM 630 mb hdd. ATI video card w/TV out. SMC 10mbs Ethernet Adapter ??? 10/100 ethernet adapter. don't have the 10/100 quite yet..but will soon. I'm going to connect this PC to the cable service( ATT @HOME) with the SMC card, and use the 10/100 to connect to my PIII machine, which has a Switch card in it to act as a hub, and a K6-2 Machine. (I have a 16 port hub as well). I want to set this up as a DHCP server, as I'm told it will assign IPs to computers. While this isn't important at home, I've been asked to set this up for DHCP at a LAN Party which will have anywhere from 20 to 100+ people...and here DHCP assigned IPs would be easier than self assigned. I would like to know if setting this up as a DHCP server will 1: Be fairly easy 2: allow me to share the internet (I need my PIII system to access the internet) Also, FakeMcCoy of the board has mentioned something about WINS--what is this all about, and how do I set it up? These might seem fairly trivial, but I don't have much experience with the networking in NT4. Win2k I'm fine though....and not sure how similar these will be. -
all of my network cards I've used work properly with my SBLive! Dlink 530TX+ Netgear FA311 Trendware TE100-S4PCI all of them have had no problems when installed on my computer ------------------ My PC is warm. I think our fire wall is acting up.

*grumble grumble grumble* screw it. I've tried everything I know...I can't get these things to work properly... my Trendware 4port Switch Ethernet card does it great...but I don't want that card in the NT4 box... I'll go out and buy a router. ------------------ My PC is warm. I think our fire wall is acting up. -
I don't have a KT133 based motherboard, or for that matter an AMD K7 system....but I know I;ve read about KT133s(namely abit Kt7) having USB problems in 2000. here's a few links that might be helpful and then again, might not http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?threadid=89012 http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?threadid=88192 ------------------ My PC is warm. "" As first reported in WinInfo Daily UPDATE, Microsoft will institute an anti-piracy measure in Whistler, the next version of Windows 2000, that will tie the Product Key to the machine ID of the first PC on which its installed. Dubbed "product activation" by the company, the feature is designed to reduce casual copying by requiring the Internet- or phone-based registration, or activation, of Whistler before it can be used. This process will create a unique identification code for that particular installation based on the Product Key that was entered and certain criteria from the hardware configuration. If the user attempts to install that copy of Whistler on a different machine with the same Product Key, the activation will fail. Whistler's product activation feature is similar to that used by Office 10, which will debut a few months before the Whistler desktop versions. "" Ok...the idea of tying the CD key with the machine is a good idea in theory. I'm buying it anyway...so piracy isn't a problem for me. But what about us that change our systems(say going from one motherboard to another, new CPU, etc.). I would assume this would change our machine ID. Then what? Do we have to go buy a new copy of Whistler just because we changed machines? ------------------ My PC is warm. I think our fire wall is acting up.

that's what I thought...but I thought that there had to be a binding program so that the Static NIC(A) would communicate through the Dynamic NIC( The ethernet cards in there now are a Dlink 530TX+(the same as I have in my 98 machine)and a Netgear FA311...both 10/100 full duplex cards Right now...I'm working on just setting this up as a DHCP server for the LAN party in 2 weeks... I've installed basically every service, protocol, etc. that's on the CD except for Mac services. I'm wanting to assign IPs to all the computers....but it's giving me problems. I connected one of my computers through a hub to this, and it just sat there. it saw the other computer...but the IPs were nothing like what I had set to assing. I've got the assigned IPs going from 10.10.4.00 to 10.10.4.255 the IP the client listed was one of the 169.x.x.x, which signifies no IP one of the Admins at the party has an NT4 networking for dummies book, but he lives an hour away..and I'm too lazy to drive...and too cheap to buy my own(especially when 2000 Server would be a more intelligent purchase). Any help, advice, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and Fake? I think this case will give that engine block a run for its money. ------------------ My PC is warm. I think the reason that USB 2.0 might be favored over Firewire is the fact that you can link a lot of items up together through USB hubs. You might be able to do this with Firewire as well...but I've honestly never seen a 1394 hub.. And if you look around...at external drives(CDRW being the key ones I've seen), the USB variants are about 2/3 the price of a comparable firewire drive. ------------------ My PC is warm. I'm still debating on whether or not to to an abit KT7a-RAID.... I would like to know if the problems with VIA, 2000, AGP, and nvidia have been fixed yet. I have a GeForce256DDR, SBLive, and plan on using 2000. Those are the problematic ones... and from what people hve seen and experienced...are the sparratic freezes fixed? ------------------ My PC is warm. I think our fire wall is acting up.

doing it the way mentioned above should allow you to wake up.... and you're not disabling it. Reposts are fine! I just wanted to tell ya that it is in fact an old tip
-
This is an old tip(fyi), but oh well Another option-the one listed before-was to move it from the system32 folder to your startup folder. That way you still have it running....but it starts much faster. I've been doing this since August of last year....and it's been great. ------------------ My PC is warm. those appupdates look for SP2. if it sees that, then it feels it doesn't need to update, as the update will be included in the final SP2. if you check your add/remove progs, it usuall says hotfix pre-SP2. since you have SP2 RC(hey, can I get that? I just have the beta)...well..you get the idea

I'm a gimp I'll sell it if anyone wants it 300 obo -- has all the manuals, 2 UDMA66 cables(I don't keep UDMA33 cables anymore), a floppy cable, the 3port USB, and I'll even throw in the receipts for it it's gone to a gigahertz and ran WIN98 fine. I ran it at 954 while I had it though.(just to stay below 110degrees F) ------------------ My PC is warm. I think our fire wall is acting up. -
but it's so hard waiting actually...I need the time to sell the P3 if I choose to go that route... but Palomino coming out, 760MP, etc... it's just not a good time to have money and desires for upgrading
-
I'm getting a large sum of money(530 bucks to be exact) from a laptop scam I dealt with over the summer I'm thinking about upgrading my motherboard and CPU...well..more like trading systems. my PIII 800eb system I have now as my main rig would go into my briefcase PC, and my K6-2 450 system in that PC would be sold to some people I know. I'm thinking about going for an Abit KT7A-RAID and a 1.2ghz CPU. (the A version has the KT133A) the problems are: 1: I was screwed over by my last AMD system: an Asus K7V / 750 Athlon classic. Is the VIA/AGP/Nvidia/2000 problem resolved? 2: where can I find a 266mhz FSB Tbird? ------------------ My PC is warm. I think our fire wall is acting up.
