Question about the anti-piracy thing in Whistler

but I'm talking about legitimate use. not cracking. What would have to be done to migrate from one system to the next, without cracking or stuff like. God help me--"The legal and right way"?

    thinking about abandoning my intel

I think the problem is mostly with the AMD VIA chipsets....I've honestly not heard of VIA probs on PIII systems ------------------ My PC is warm. I think our fire wall is acting up.

    Difference Between KT7A and KT7A-R

http://www.promise.com/ there is info about RAID there basically, RAID allows a person with 2 hdds to span them (making them 1 large drive-which is great with smaller harddrives), or if the drives are the same size(and model?) STriping them (RAID 0) makes the drives faster...basically all the even bits go on 1 drive, and odd bits go on the other, if I understand correctly. RAID 1 allows backup, both drives are mirror images(in case 1 drive goes bad) RAID 1 0 combines both of these, and requires 4 drives. RAID 5...not sure here's what promise says: This article offers a quick overview of RAID and RAID terms. RAID Levels What is RAID? to top In a standard PC, each hard drive is seen as an independent disk designated by letters like C,D,E, etc… In a RAID system, multiple hard drives are placed into one or more "arrays" of disks. Each array is seen as an independent disk, though that array may include upwards of two, three, four, or more drives. This is why RAID stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks. In an IDE RAID array, of course, the drives are low-cost IDE. Promise IDE RAID also uses advanced data handling techniques that takes advantage of the fact that multiple drives are performing the work of a single drive. This includes tagged command queuing/scatter-gather/elevator seek which basically re-orders requests for data depending on their location on the hard drives. This provides more efficient use of the read/write heads, particularly in retrieving data. RAID Levels to top Using RAID arrays inside a PC offers much greater flexibility, depending on application usage. Different RAID levels perform different functions. RAID 0 (known as "striping") basically links each drive in the array as one huge drive. Storage capacity is determined by the smallest drive in the array. That capacity is then applied to format all other drives in the array. If using a 4GB, 6GB, 5GB drive in a RAID 0 array, your system will see one huge drive of 12GB (4GB x 3) versus 15GB. RAID 0 offers double or more performance under sustained data transfers when one drive per IDE port is used. In such a configuration, unlike SCSI, IDE drives are always available to the system. SCSI requires more management of the SCSI bus. Spanning: If a user wishes to obtain all the capacity of the drives in an array, he may also choose to "span" the drives. Unfortunately, there are no other benefits except capacity with the spanning solution. RAID 1 (known as "mirroring") makes and maintains an identical image of data from one drive to a second drive or from multiple drives to a second set of multiple drives. Should one drive fail, the working drive or drive set continues operating. To the system, such an array is still seen as a single drive letter. While RAID 1 is the least efficient use of hard drives to provide data protection (since the user does not see any of the additional storage capacity of the mirrored drives), low-cost IDE makes it acceptable. If performing 1-to-1 mirroring with two 4GB drives, the system only sees one 4GB drive. IDE RAID 1 represents a significantly lower cost than SCSI RAID 1. RAID 5 uses a mathematical expression that compares data from two drives and calculates a third piece of data called "parity". Should one of the drives fail, parity data can be used to rebuild the failed data. Under RAID 5, parity data is stored across all drives in the array. This maximizes the amount of storage capacity available from all drives in the array while still providing data redundancy. ------------------ My PC is warm. I think our fire wall is acting up.

actually, the A7V133 appears to have RAID support the RAID version gives you the same thing as a RAID card on the board.

nah some DHCP serving for several computers, lots of gaming, and that's about it don't need it.

I don't mean to piss everyone off..........

I do it every month and a half or so... mostly out of boredom this last time, my mouse was giving me problems(switched from the Intellimouse Explorer to a Razer Boomslang and the MSIE drivers wouldn't uninstall properly, I was installing NT4 server on another machine, and thought what the hell). I'm down to 4 hours in restore time, from booting off CDROM, to being back exactly where I was before. ------------------ My PC is warm. I think our fire wall is acting up.

    thinking about abandoning my intel

nope, no slowdowns or anything I have great running system that doesn't NEED anything new I'm having a hard time really. The price is REASONABLE for a 1.2 ghz AMD system. but I really want SMP. and I want to get away from intel...I love their stability and all....but I just don't see them going anywhere fast. they're just too expensive compared to the AMDs.. 336 for a 1ghz PIII, 175 for a 1ghz AMD. I'm trying to convince myself to save up for the 760mp chipset motherboards...and go dual Tbirds(sorry, Duron Duron sounds like a certain band. I can't handle that and DDR. right now, my only bottleneck I know of is my Videocard...a GeForce256DDR. And that's by no means an inferior card, either. I get over 60 fps in all my games....and higher than that and my monitor can't keep up so why should I care? *sigh* I wish I didn't have money to burn ------------------ My PC is warm. thinking about abandoning my intel

I know that but I can't afford it.... and for the same price as a new 800eb and a new motherboard, I can get the AMD, and have it be faster I fully support intel systems...I don't know of any x86 systems more stable in the desktop market. dual will probably be my next system. on the other hand.....why not wait for the SMP AMDs to come out?! it'll be a couple months decision made [This message has been edited by INFERNO2000 (edited 16 January 2001).]

    thinking about abandoning my intel

I abandoned the mobo. I like 2K too much I use the newest drivers for everything setup planned: kt7a-RAID cheapest duron I can find(until the 266 come out) Windows 2000 GeForce256DDR newest drivers available [This message has been edited by INFERNO2000 (edited 16 January 2001).]
  10. I'm slightly surprised that no one mentioned ZoneAlarm. I personally use ZA Pro(parents use regular ZA)...and have had good luck with it. however...I would assume this to be geared more towards workstations than servers... ZA is free. ZA Pro is free too, if you have friends I'm running W2K AS as well... for AntiVirus...Norton's Corporate Edition is working well on this machine.

    Dual PII AT motherboard

I'm looking at playing around with a Dual CPU system in NT4...and am not looking to spend much money. Anyone know of any AT motherboards that support dual PIIs for relatively cheap? (ATX won't work in this case) ------------------ My PC is warm. I think our fire wall is acting up.

    FOP 32-1

Alpha PEP66T(with the Delta Black Label of the FOP38). PIII cpu. 800eb @ 954. AT FULL LOAD, I only get 32 degrees Celsius But I have fans..and lots of them. If you want performance, get the FOP38(or PEP66T with Delta Black Label)...and work on reducing sound other ways... or be like me-stupid-and go for performance over sound. (Mine does over 1033 ghz...but not in Win2k. Just 98)

  15. Just wondering if anyone else here that has this mouse has been able to set the macro (Windows Key) (E) for the Explore My Computer. I used the button I assigned to this on my Intellimouse Explorer all the time...but am at a loss on how to get his working. ------------------ My PC is warm. I think our fire wall is acting up.

NT 4 Server and Setting up a DHCP(and proxy if necessary) se

I hope you're right CUV I don't have a second card in there right now, as I don't have a spare 10/100 quite yet. are you sure NT4 will support that? It'd be great if so... also can you recomend any software? WinProxy? [This message has been edited by INFERNO2000 (edited 09 January 2001).]

NT 4 Server and Setting up a DHCP(and proxy if necessary) se

The new box will run NT4 SERVER. I've got DHCP up and running...haven't tested it though. I got a new NIC that's both a 10/100 Ethernet, but also a 4 port N-Way Switch, so my 10s will now talk to the 100s properly. DNS...not sure if I'll use it or not... it can't hurt, after all. I have the parts set up so all the PCs can see eachother.... so as a DHCP server for the LAN, it's fine. what I need to find out now is how to set up Internet Connection Sharing for the PCs that are connected(which is important at home) Other than calling up ATT@Home and begging for a static IP...what should I do?

    4 Port NIC question

I just bought a new NIC. a TE100-S4PCI (http://www.trendware.com/products/100Mbps/adapter/spec-te100s4pci.htm) for 80 bucks Now my question is what program to use to share the internet. Do I use an application such as WinProxy, or is there something better? Maybe a way to set my PC up as a DHCP server(this is on the Win2k CD)? I just want to be able to share internet with this computer. [ January 01, 2001: Message edited by: INFERNO2000 ]

    P100 system for cheap?

Looking for a Pentium 100 (or thereabouts) system for really REALLY cheap. All I need is the mobo, CPU, 16MB+ RAM, a hdd large enough to run WinNT4 + Server/Proxy software(500mb would suffice), a powersupply, and switches(unless it's AT) Anything else is just icing on the cake. All it needs to have is an open PCI, an open ISA, and onboard Video(or a video card that doesn't interfere with the 1 PCI and 1 ISA I need. I just want to set up a Proxy Server Make an offer--I've found one that's better than what I mentioned for 40 bucks...but I have to wait a month and a half for it, and I need it by next Friday(the 5th)
