I'm looking into it But if I do that, I'll want a nicer case -

Actually, a PII or PIII, or even AMD, would be fine as well..just something I can overclock, and must be 400mhz or better -

I have until Dec 2 to build one It'll be in a plastic briefcase that says "Property of Macon County", but I'll get it built My case will be in there as soon as I get photos taken of it. I'll probably wait until after the Asus iPanel comes out though...(please be soon) My baby is now running at 954mhz(159/159/39), and won't go any higher(I lose the IDE controllers)...so now I need a new endeavour -
Intel CPUs allow you more room to overclock, usually...and more compatability with Windows2000, than an AMD. But AMD makes a fast little chip. It just takes more to get it working properly

hmm.. Actually, 440bx or even 810 should be enough... All that will be done with this is it'll be thrown in a briefcase. See the 2nd picture at http://www.virtualhideout.net/cool_case/page34.shtml Just a fun little project . and I need cheaper than 100 -
Z80 4mhz? Wow. That's what powered the TI-81....scary. How long before we see Athlon 1.4 ghz in calculators?

Oh dear god... I tried it again, and this time got MacOSX to work..should I stick with it instead of 2k? ------------------ NECESSARY EVIL --Custom Built PC-- <Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP1> Intel Pentium III Coppermine(FCPGA 370) 800eb @ 954 (with ThermalTake Golden Orb heatsink) Asus CUSL2 motherboard(no onboard sound) BIOS rev 1003.003 Beta(edited) 256MB PC133 SDRAM (1x256 Mushkin Rev2 CAS 2:2:2) SuperMicro 760A Full Tower(Modded for more fans and Painted Rustoleum Hammered Black) SP301-RA 300W Athlon Approved Redundant Cooling Power Supply IBM15-7 15GB UDMA/100 7200RPM hdd & 30GB MAXTOR Diamand Max UDMA/66 7200 RPM hdd 7 80mm,3 92mm, and 2 120mm High Output fans(along with 2 80mm in Power Supply, CPU, and GeForce fans) spewing out well over 1000 CFM Creative Labs SB Live! Whenever I try to add the printer to my computer, it keeps saying "OUT OF RESOURCES Printer operation cannot continue due to lack of resources. The print subsystem is unavailable. " It's plugged in, and has power...and worked on my other computer, so what's going on? HP 660CSe from 1995, worked well for a long time with no problems...could it be giving out? It did work with Windows 2000 last semester.

I bought a couple Sunon 120mm(113 CFM each)fans that I'm, using in my case...heavy duty steel(plastic can kiss my @$$)....but I didn't read the package, and it turns out they're AC Powered. Which, although it means an extra cord coming out of my pc, is pretty sweet, now that my Powersupply only has work on powering the other 10 fans My question is this: The plugs are professional(the ones that go into the fan). I heard the guy that sold these to me mention something about AC noise?(I took it back the next day to see why they weren't working on my computer--he showed me that they were AC)...would I notice any problem? For the record, the plugs are being fed through the back through an Wide SCSI port hole that is unused...

They sold me 2 chrome grills for 1.50. That's about 1/6th what it would cost me to buy them online(after shipping). The fans were in the computer aisle...so who knows? I just know they put out plenty of air Audio noise isn't that bad...it'll just blend in with the rest of the computer... Signal noise shouldn't be a problem, as the only thing this will pass by is a 92mm exhaust fan, and the top of my video card... But I thought I should ask anyway. ------------------ NECESSARY EVIL --Custom Built PC-- <Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP1> Intel Pentium III Coppermine(FCPGA 370) 800eb @ 954 (with ThermalTake Golden Orb heatsink) Asus CUSL2 motherboard(no onboard sound) BIOS rev 1003.003 Beta(edited) 256MB PC133 SDRAM (1x256 Mushkin Rev2 CAS 2:2:2) SuperMicro 760A Full Tower(Modded for more fans and Painted Rustoleum Hammered Black) SP301-RA 300W Athlon Approved Redundant Cooling Power Supply IBM15-7 15GB UDMA/100 7200RPM hdd & 30GB MAXTOR Diamand Max UDMA/66 7200 RPM hdd 7 80mm,3 92mm, and 2 120mm High Output fans(along with 2 80mm in Power Supply, CPU, and GeForce fans) spewing out well over 1000 CFM Creative Labs SB Live! If you have a small partition, you might want to dedicate it to that? I have 256MB RAM, and I have a 660MB Swap partition/Swap File. It's a fixed size, and I've never had a problem with it... It might be excessive, but I'm staring at 45 gigs, and using only 5..so I can spare it. Make the file larger than necessary, then set it as that(say 660min 660max)

I'll just throw in my 2 cents for the hell of it. I'm a diehard 2k user..I hate 9x, but I use it when the person's computer has it on..and I'll probably throw it on my briefcase pc that I'm making, simply for space concerns(and it'll be a LAN PC) I think Windows2000 is the way to, since Whistler is only in beta stages(I tend to wait for a few RCs to throw it on my computer...but I'll definitely be going Whistler when it comes out). If a game supports multiplayer, then it is purely idiotic(and I'm talking Davidnewbould idiotic ) to NOT support NT, as it was designed for multi-user, online applications. 2000 is NT...so it should be supported, am I right? I can understand games not being supported in Linux(or any other UNIX), mac, OS2, or any other OS out there, as the programming for it is very different than that of windows. However, the good multiplayer games tend to have that(Quake(series), Halflife/Counterstrike, etc.) If a company is going to support Windows, then I feel it should support every flavor of Windows from 95 on, for any program. OS-specific programs, such as the Norton applications(Utilities) that don't work with 2000 are understandable...and they've since released 2000 and ME compatible versions with the 2001 series, if I'm correct(I don't use them..so I'm guessing). Starting February 17th, 2000, every manufacturer should have had 2000 in their lineup of OS's supported. Failure to do so is poor management decisions, except in special circumstances(which I can't think of at the moment). Still....there is always something comforting in looking at a box that says Windows 2000 Professional Compatible... That label was on my Asus CUSL2, but absent from my Asus K7V. I appreciated that label, and it's proven to be accurate. That tag lets you know that the manufacturer didn't sit on their ass doing nothing, but rather sat on it and made sure it worked. Just look for it for new programs and hardware, and yell at the makers for older software...

Noticed strange little quirk with my computer as of late. I left the windows open last night, and had the panels removed from my computer.... When I woke up this morning, the CPU temperature read N/A, and the fans kept showing a zero rotation speed, I thought computers were supposed to operate better when "cooled"? I've also noticed this only happens when my mobo temperature is under 70 degrees Farenheit ------------------ NECESSARY EVIL --Custom Built PC-- <Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP1> Intel Pentium III Coppermine(FCPGA 370) 800eb @ 900 (with ThermalTake Golden Orb heatsink) Asus CUSL2 motherboard(no onboard sound) BIOS rev 1003.003 Beta 256MB PC133 SDRAM (1x256 Mushkin) SuperMicro 760A Full Tower(Modded and Painted Hammerite Black) SP301-RA 300W Athlon Approved Redundant Cooling Power Supply IBM15-7 15GB UDMA/100 7200RPM hdd & 30GB MAXTOR Diamand Max UDMA/66 7200 RPM hdd 5 80mm & 3 92mm High Output fans(along with 2 80mm in Power Supply, CPU, and GeForce fans) spewing out almost 800 CFM(while acceptably quiet) Creative Labs SB Live! My system runs below 100 degrees even with a 75 ambient and overclocked 150 mhz(and 26mhz FSB more). I think the temperature was about 50 something last night, and the window was left open, the case was open, and all my fans were on And heatsinks are veritable kilns, rather than hotplates

I've been planning on getting a UDMA 33 controller card for my CD and DVD Roms, and free up a UDMA Controller on my mobo, a CUSL2. Couple quick and probably easy questions: Can I set up my BIOS in such a way as to recognize, and be able to boot off of the UDMA33 controller card controlled CD Roms? Or am I limited to onboard controllers and SCSI alone(I saw nothing that would make me think IDE off hand)? Also, if it can be booted off of(otherwise I won't get it), can you recommend any good controller cards? I don't need RAID or anything fancy(yet)...I just want to reapportion my resources(use the 100 controllers for 66 and 100, not 33 or PLO 4)

I know how to boot off of SCSI, even though I don't have anything SCSI.... It's IDE drives I'm concerned about... I'm not getting anything overly fancy, like a UDMA 66/100 RAID card...I just want a 33 to throw some CDs and maybe a ZIP on? But I see nothing in the BIOS to make me think IDE will work..unless it falls under the SCSI category(which, with Intel's UltraATA drivers, who knows?).. -
check hardocp.com or virtualhideout.net. I think I saw a link there.

Something like that.

Got a general question that is destined to screw me up, but here goes: I'll be painting my beige system this next weekend black. The panels are no problem, and luckily, I just ordered a black Floppy(my second one, since the first seems to be proprietary ). My question is this: My CD-ROM drives are two different shades of grey....my DVD the Compaq Grey, and my RW standard PC beige. I planned on painting the face plates black, but not the tray, or buttons, or dials, etc. Of course to do this properly, I will be required to remove the face plates. There is no longer a warranty on the drives, so painting won't ruin that. My questions are specifically: will paint at all disrupt the drives? I don't want anything gumming up on me..and are there any tricks to removing faceplates, or will it be pretty standard and simple?

Ran out to Menards yesterday and picked up 2 cans of Rustoleum Hammered Black finish. Looks really nice on the inside of my old case... I plan on using 2 or 3 coats on everything but the buttons(not painting those so it'll contrast)
