If nothing else, the answer is this: I have them both legally. Why use Win2k Adv Ser? Because I Can.
-
I own a Legitimate Key for Win2k Advanced Server I own a Legitimate copy of Win2k Professional. I could get away with only using Server, but I don't have a legitimate key for that...and though Piracy isn't beyond me...I don't want to go through the problems of my old warezed copy of MS Office 2000, where the SR1 destroyed the warezed copies. The fact of the matter is, I ahve Pro, and I have Adv Ser. The system resources required by Adv Ser are negligibly different than that of Professional, so why not have the more powerful OS? I've played games on Every OS. Win2k Prof works HL better than 98(connections tend to get lower pings). My use of Advanced Server is only for the fact it's an File Server, like I've mentioned, and I've had instances of over 30 people trying to connect all at once(see what happens when you decide to be the mp3 hub of the Residence Hall?). Yet, it is also my main computer, my personal workstation, if you will. I leave this Compaq up and running my CS server, and on occasion, use Linux on it. This is more of a backup PC. By all rights, this should be using the Advanced Server rather than WinMe, but, if I have to have 2 kernels(some programs for the campus to turn in homework don't like NT), then I'd prefer the inferior kernel-9x-to be on the inferior computer? It's basically a matter of choice. This has run Win2k Pro, Win2k Adv Ser, Win95, Win3.1, Win98(AND SE), and now WinMe. I prefer Adv Ser for the multitude of options it allows me, and I do use a vast majority of the options listed to Adv Ser that aren't in Pro ------------------ OBSIDIAN (Win2k System) ---Custom Built---REBUILDING LOOKING: PIII Coppermine in 800+mhz region(133FSB) Asus CUSL2 mobo(no onboard sound) PNY 288(295 listed)MB PC100 SDRAM (2x128 & 1x32) A-Top 901 Case & 300W Athlon Approved Power Supply 30GB MAXTOR Diamand Max UDMA/66 7200 RPM hdd and IBM15-7 15GB UDMA/100 7200RPM hdd 3 Internal 80mm fans(along with Power Supply, CPU, and GeForce fans) CL SB Live! I called down to a local computer store asking if they had the capability of ordering mobos from ASUS, and they said yes...I asked them about a CUSL2, they said they had one in stock, and I told them not to sell it, I'd be in there soon I just lucked out on it Especially since, had I not called in and told them to hold it, half an hour before I got there(I had class), someone came in and was wanting to buy it. But it's in my closet now, waiting for me to find the money to buy a CPU(which is now a longer wait, as I had to buy a new hdd today, my 1 GB Seagate died, so I bought a 15GB ATA-100 ). Which brings me to a question: Can an ATA(UDMA)-100 hdd run off the UDMA/66 at the 100 mark, or do I need to find a UDMA/100 cable for it?
-
I went out and bought the CUSL2 for $166 today. No audio, so maybe that will fix one of my problems*frequent sysaudio.sys error*. Now, anyone with this mobo, or an i815e mobo, can you tell me how STABLE it is, as compared to a VIA KX133 chipset mobo?(my K7V being the basis if aplicable)

Ok...there's also an i820...All I want is single processor. ALthough I'll probably run Adv. Ser with it(I'm on Pro for now)...I've no true use for dual PIII 850's So, for a single processor intel-based board...what should I go for? I'm looking at the CUSL2 and the CUC2 from Asus....as well as others... Any recomendations would be greatly appreciated .

I've installed W2k about 15 times in under 24 hours---it never finishes installation--always stops somewhere in the registering components or in the saving settings. I've pulled all my cards, just using the Video now...and still no luck. Any hints? No...haven't had the opportunity to pull the ATI out of this PC. I've tried all the newer drivers, from 5.22 release on. no difference

you're missing an important fact. The Win2k machine is MY WORKSTATION and File Server...whereas my Compaq is a CS Server, TV, and occasional media app box. The video cards are where they need to be--the 32MB GeForce is in the Custom, as I play CS and Q3A on the Custom; and the 4mb ATI is in the Compaq as I don't use 3d on the Compaq. As for sound--my K7V mobo has an onboard soundcard installed, but I've been told Aureal and Win2k are a no-go...seeing as how they are now defunct. Therefore, it is disabled, and I have an SBLive ------------------ OBSIDIAN (Win2k System) ---Custom Built--- AMD Athlon 750(model 2) retail (Slot A) Asus K7V Mobo BIOS revision 1007 PNY 288(295 listed)MB PC100 SDRAM (2x128 & 1x32) A-Top 901 Case & 300W Athlon Approved Power Supply 3 Internal 80mm fans(along with Power Supply, CPU, and GeForce fans) CL SB Live! Ok... the camera is off, took it off yesterday, and all I've used it for in the past few months is as a microphone. Why am I using Adv Ser? At the very least, I'd use server, as I do operate a file server for several PCs on campus, and did at one time use it as my media (webcam) server. I've found it works better than Windows 2000 Professional, when properly set up.

I don't want to do this just yet... Can ANYONE tell me hints, tips, etc. on how to get everything working properly, without crashes? I tend to get NTOSKRNL errors most often...but I like my system otherwise.
-
I always install off a fresh format, or I format it in the setup. Always. All my peripherals are in the right place--Keyboard on PS2 and mouse on USB. It's running now, but it crashes all the time...and I don't understand why? Is the Athlon and VIA chipset that troubled??? I had NO problems with a COMPAQ on a PIII?!

Fairly new camera--just a few months old. I haven't used it in quite a while, and don't see myself having any need for it in the near future, so I'm selling it. Logitech's new drivers list it as a Web, though it was bought as a Home. USB interface built in Mic. All working perfectly. looking for around $60, as I paid over $100 for it...and it's good as new.

Umm...me too. I'm doing research at college(yeah, that's it), and they haven't upgraded past NT 4. Email me too

It's a copy of a legit CD, with a legit registration for it. CD is in good shape...as are teh harddrives and RAM.

Hey guys, I'm looking for an external modem, must be working(of course), and have the power adapter. Manuals unnecessary. I'm looking to spend no more than $30, so if you have used one you don't use, let me know? I also have a PCMCIA 56K modem I've never used-brand new in box. I'd be willing to trade if so desired, otherwise, consider this being sold for about $40?

And another thing---I want to be able to PLAY CS on it as well from time to time...Dedicated is what it will be used for most, but I still need the option of jumping in and enjoying my 14 FPS on 640x480 Software rendering(OpenGL is 4 )
-
Why 98? Convenience--has USB support, my WinTV will work better on it(I think), and many other game related things... I've got NT 5 on my other computer--no need to take a step down to 4 on this pc...

Ok...Asus K7V Athlon 750, Win2k, Nvidia card. I'm getting a crapload of errors, namely ntoskrnl.exe, and a few sysaudio.sys. It's not my memory, as I've reformatted several times in this past week, with new RAM. I have installed SP1(norton finds a virus in one of the files on a fresh install??) and all of the mobo specific progs and drivers. I'm running a BIOS ver. 1007. didn't he say he has it oc'ed to 464? You'll be fine with Win2k...just stay away from Advanced Server unless you have at least 200 mb RAM(I ran fine on 160 though).
