I know, I know....INFERNO2000? YOU ASKING ABOUT WIN98? Shaddup. If I install it, I get a 1 GB HDD for free. It's for my parents' computer, I installed Win98SE on their P1 100 (48MB RAM)...and after it resets the second time(when it's getting ready to go into the OS itself), it says Windows File Protection Error. I've installed that OS hundreds of times on several computers...but this is the first time it's EVER done this to me... Any ideas?
-
the problem with this was those defunct bastards at Packard Bell. The motherboard doesn't allow the upgrade to Win98. Oh well. I still got the hdd

No, but I do have Nav2k for NT, and I guess I can try it as well.... It has happened in other applications, it's just that (when) Norton scans c:, I get a lot of files coming up saying "Windows protection error" and prompt me for the cd to restore the files...and eventually-and without fail, it bsods.

Powerstrip should do it....but I gave up overclocking my Geforce(Annihilator Pro, from CL)...I didn't see any real difference. -

I used the memory program listed as the third comment in the "RAM PROBLEMS" post, and after 76 loops(and 12 hours of not being able to play CS) there had been no problems.

This is my 15th clean install on this system...2nd using the FAT32.(albeit most were restarts) I've used the repair function, to no real avail I checked my memory, no problems I use NAV CE 7.01 ------------------ Win2k System AMD Athlon 750 retail (Slot A) Asus K7V Mobo BIOS revision 1007-02c(beta) PNY 294 MB PC100 SDRAM A-Top 901 Case & 300W Athlon Approved Power Supply CL SB Live! I finally got my system up to where I could play games, and I enabled EAX on C-strike. DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN!!!! My "low" volume setting practically blew my computer speakers out!!! What does this mean? I HAVE TO KEEP THIS SOUND CARD!!! So how do I resolve the conflict? ------------------ Win2k System AMD Athlon 750 retail (Slot A) Asus K7V Mobo BIOS revision 1007-02c(beta) PNY 294 MB PC100 SDRAM A-Top 901 Case & 300W Athlon Approved Power Supply CL SB Live! hmm.... The only problem I'm having now is sysaudio.sys now. I feel that this is most likely a conflict of soundcards--onboard and SBLIVE!. The 4:3 setting would set my PC-100 RAM to PC-133, which would effectively destroy them, burn them up, etc. not an acceptable option.
-
I don't have a 256 chip...2 128s and a 32. All PNY Brand, and all PC100. the 4-3 would **** up my system, I'm pretty sure. I'm running it in FAT32 right now...and I'm having less problems...but I still get the sysaudio.sys error, and on occasion, I get ntoskrnl.sys error. Any ideas on what I could do to fix this? I've installed Win2k 15 times in the past 3 days....and still don't have everything working properly... The onboard audio IS disabled, I double checked last night... When will SP1 come out? maybe that will fix things... ------------------ Win2k System AMD Athlon 750 retail (Slot A) Asus K7V Mobo BIOS revision 1007-02c(beta) PNY 294 MB PC100 SDRAM A-Top 901 Case & 300W Athlon Approved Power Supply CL SB Live! I switched the Compaq RAM with my 32MB PNY...so I'm now running all PNY RAM. I'll see what happens...
-
256MB of the RAM is PNY PC100 SDRAM(2 weeks old) 128MB of the RAM is Compaq PC100 SDRAM(1 year old) These RAM chips worked flawlessly in my Compaq. RAM Speed is set at 100mhz Interleave is set at 3:3 instead of 4:3 Audio is disabled both through BIOS, and through jumpers.
-
I've got the same guts of the system as you: K7V and Athlong 750.... The best way to do something without setting jumpers is use the softjumpers mentioned in the manual...then you can overclock some things from BIOS. My video card wasn't posting problems at AGP4x w/ Fast Writes...but I WAS still installing from scratch...so, maybe the 640x480 vga setting had something to do with it.....I'll have Win2k installed this evening, so I'll let you know how I fare...what video card do you have? And can you tell a fellow K7Ver any problems I might expect? ------------------ BUILDING: AMD Athlon 750 (Slot A) Asus K7V Mobo PNY 384 MB PC100 SDRAM A-Top 901 Case CL SB Live! Ok...now here's a classic computer demon that I need exorcised. Banished to the Mac world, if you will I just disassemled 3 computers, 1 486(took a 20x CD-Rom, a 325 MB hdd, and a floppy), 1 Pentium 1(the 1 GB Hdd), and the other a Pentium III(took the DVD Rom, CD-RW, Video card, 2 Harddrives, and 384 RAM). The 486 is forever dead... The Pentium 1 is running on a sole 8.4 GB hdd. The spare parts(the 2hdds, the dvd, cdrw, floppy, ram, video card) are waiting for my case on monday. Which leaves me with the infected demon. The Pentium III is running the BTCCDROM from the 486. I tried installing Linux on it...but it stopped working, so I figured I'd try again later... So I wanted Win98 on it so I could at least play some games until I build my other computer. When booting from the Win98 disk, the cdrom tray opens and closes in rapid succession, regardless of a cd's presence(*I even used my bootable Win2000 RC1 to test)*. How do I exorcise my demons, and get my CD drive on the lighter side? Or do I just laugh and tell people that the cup holder is having problems

What's happened is this: I'm using an old CD ROM(yes it's IDE) that has 2 buttons--it;s one of the cd players that can play cds just by pressing buttons on the outside(as opposed to the 1 button variety). Compaq(which $uck$ a$$) has a cover over the CD drive, that if you press the button on the outside of the cover, it presses both of the buttons...which makes it go screwy. Also, now it's being a bastard and opens up and immediately closes....making it a race to put cds in...but I need the exercise... I'll try BeOS5 again..that was slightly interesting..... and I'm only running win98 on this till I get a new video card and then I'll go Linux on this for my Halflife Server(CS)

I'm thinking of picking up an internal Zip drive....I need to know if it connects via and IDE Cable(in which case I'm screwed), or by the floppy cable(in which all is good).
-
Parallel? why in god's name would I use the same technology my dad has had in his Zip for years? It is my duty to surpass him every chance I can get(for bragging rights, of course) I'm strictly USB my board has 4 ports for a reason

Installing Windows2000 from formated hard drive ?
INFERNO2000 replied to ilkevinli's topic in Software
The best way is to boot off CD... it Does work... however, if need be..you can use a Win98 boot disk, to get the CDdrive working, enter setup from the cd(x:\i386\winnt, where x is your cd drive), then format the drive from within the setup to remove the Win9x portion*(not doing this will result in failure if you convert to NTFS)* At least, that's what I've done in the past. -
Ok, just wondering, didn't intend on replacing my floppy I just wondered if it used the same ribbon, in which case I could use it, or if it required IDE, in which case I can't, as all my IDE channels are filled. I guess I'll just have to get the USB External...which is no problem at all.

"...And Bill said unto the world...Let there be Windows 2000..." And there was much rejoicing. "...Let it be more user friendly than Windows NT4, and more stable than Windows 98..." And there was much rejoicing. "...Let it eat up system memory, but not lose it all in the process..." And there was much rejoicing. "...Let it surpass any Windows platform yet in applications..." And there was much rejoicing. "...and yet not be the OS for games..." And all hell broke loose. This is where we overthrow Bill, make the games work, and build sites like this that provide some of us entertainment(making fun of jdulmage ), most of us with newfound abilities(courtesy of all the people needing help and all those that help), and generally let the world know that we can do (almost) anything with this kick-ass OS, even play games. Just my 2 cents. ------------------ BUILDING: AMD Athlon 750 (Slot A) Asus K7V Mobo PNY 384 MB PC100 SDRAM AT901 Case CL SB Live! INFERNO2000 replied to pr-man's topic in Software
OOC, what video card do you have? I know it seems off topic, but when I had a Diamond Stealth 540 Xtreme, any use of Explorer(IE or WE), it would freeze in about 1 minute, 2 if I was reallllllly lucky. The reason I think it may be a video card related problem, is because when switching to a GeForce, it went away...
