Just got a quick question: I've got a Creative Labs SB Live! X-Gamer...but I just found out that the Asus K7V I just bought comes with an onboard Soundcard. I'm wondering about the quality of this soundcard.... My sound system is this: Headphones and Logitech Soundman G1 powered speakers. Would I be best off sending back the X-Gamer, and saving about $100 and staying with the onboard sound, or would I be much better off with the X-Gamer. I run Windows 2000.
-
AS to the onboard soundcard, according to Anandtech, "The K7V...features the Cirrus Logic CrystalClear SoundFusion CS4299 AC'97 codec that provides the CPU driven sound on-board." It also goes on to say "...In terms of quality and performance, most AnandTech readers won't be too flattered by the integrated codec and will opt to use one of the three PCI slots for their own PCI sound card, but if this board is going to be the base for a second system then the integrated sound could save you a few bucks"

you will. But burn it. Burn it burn it burn it. Their Restore CDs tend to have at least 2 problems with them, namely missing applications(for mine, it was modem drivers) When you get it, find out all the hardware you have, find drivers for it, and I guess software too...and download them. Restore from an MS Windows cd...not a restore. You'll be much better off, and their crap won't be on it(MAKE SURE TO LOOK FOR THEIR EASY ACCESS BUTTONS Software FIRST!)

Headphones: Aiwa HP-X222. $30 at Best Buy. as for the speakers, I have some JBL speakers that came with my Compaq...but they're both unpowered, and have no volume controls or on/off. I don't need the high performance $100 speakers, since I'm in headphones...and these G1s give enough that I'd be happy fro quite a while. I don't know if I've ever used DirectSound...all I tend to install as for manufacturer's software is their drivers...therefore, the Liveware3 program I'd probably go without... I won't have the board until tomorrow, or the new case until Monday(assuming UPS is not lying to me)...so I can't test it immediately...But, according to Asus's specs "AC ' 97 Audio Ready Integrated AC ' 97 Compliant 3D Audio Controller AD1881 3D Enhanced Codec " What does this tell me? NEO^-does the onboard audio have a place for both headphones AND powered speakers? Also---if you're running Win2K(Which I'd naively assume), what problems have you had with your board? ------------------ BUILDING: AMD Athlon 750 (Slot A) Asus K7V Mobo PNY 384 MB PC100 SDRAM AT901 Case CL SB Live! As quoted by MS ".... However, IE 5.5 will be provided as part of Windows 2000 Service Pack 1...." Good news about it being late though... As quoted by that security thing on the front page..if you read down a ways... " .....However, IE 5.5 will be provided as part of Windows 2000 Service Pack 1....." I guess this is why it's "late"...and all things considered, that's fine for me...I'd rather see it built around 5.5 than 5.01 SP1, which most of not all of us will upgrade from(to 5.5) anyway. ------------------ BUILDING: AMD Athlon 750 (Slot A) Asus K7V Mobo PNY 384 MB PC100 SDRAM AT901 Case CL SB Live! I've just purchased a new Mobo(Asus K7V) and processor(Athlon 750) from "Whoisyourdaddy". This ad is in the Buy and Sell dept. I've also purchased a new case, an AT901 http://www.pccase.com/products/AT901.html This comes with a 250W Power supply Parts I'm going to transfer from my current computers are 2 harddrives(30GB and 13.5 GB) 1 Floppy drive(from my 486) 3 128MB PC100 RAM chips 1 Video card(CL Annhilator Pro(GeForce DDR) 1 Sound card(Diamond Sonic Impact S90) 1 Modem(damned if I know) 1 NIC(Intel something or other) 1 DVD 1 CDRW maybe an extra fan from my 486 My questions are: 1: Will my power supply give me any problems, or should I swap the 300W my compaq has in it? 2: I've read about some problems with Athlons and their motherboards... Are there any major known problems with this Motherboard and CPU? If so--where can I find fixes 3: Will a direct transfer of my harddrives yield a working system, or will I have to reformat to make alterations due to the new motherboard, chipset, and CPU? 4: Is there anything else you can comment on that would help me in this endeavour? My current computers specs are listed below. Mainly the only change I'm making is NON-Compaq motherboard, and a faster CPU, albeit Athlon instead of PIII. ------------------ PIII 500 (Pre CuMine) 393(listed)MB RAM GeForce DDR (Annihilator Pro) Sonic Impact S90 Win2K Advanced Server Logitech Itouch Elite Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer Everglide (HL Giganta) Logitech Quickcam Home etc. etc. etc.

If I install Sp1(assuming it does get released before this weekend), and then click on R when I install it into my old drive, will that fuhk things up? (it trying to overwrite the new files, thus negating any effect SP1 might have) Would I be most wise to just wait until all is put together to install SP1? ------------------ BUILDING: AMD Athlon 750 (Slot A) Asus K7V Mobo PNY 384 MB PC100 SDRAM AT901 Case CL SB Live! Really? Hot damn! Saves me an evening -
AS will I. I just save everything to CD, because I'm called upon frequently to install things or configure computers by my peers. Therefore, I would prefer having a large file to download and be able to distribute amongst others without having to worry about the internet, as many of my peers won't have T1 access this fall like I will. ------------------ BUILDING: AMD Athlon 750 (Slot A) Asus K7V Mobo PNY 384 MB PC100 SDRAM AT901 Case CL SB Live! Ok, you twisted my arm....not really, because I found a reason to go Best Buy out of this (that and the fact the RAM I bought last week went on sale. Doh!) I picked up a SBLive! X-Gamer, which will hopefully suit my needs...Plus I got some games I can sell to my brother for full cost... As for other things, I'm being told I can swap my Power Supplies so long as they're both similar(screw in)...with little to no problem. Hopefully PCCASE.com will email me back so I can tell them to just swap them there. As for the harddrives, I meant basically hot-swapping them, just unplugging, replugging, and booting up. But I think I'll reformat anyway...unless someone is POSITIVE that I'll be ok.. Anyone know of a modem that uses the AMR(Audio Modem Riser) slot? I don't want to waste a PCI slot for an item I never use..especially when I can just plug my laptop in and use it... ------------------ PIII 500 (Pre CuMine) 393(listed)MB RAM GeForce DDR (Annihilator Pro) Sonic Impact S90 Win2K Advanced Server Logitech Itouch Elite Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer Everglide (HL Giganta) Logitech Quickcam Home etc. etc. etc. -

I'm using Windows 2000's "legacy" drivers. I don't use A3D....at least, it's never worked to my knowledge. I'm going to be strapped for cash for a while, so I'll test the S90 first then go for a new soundcard if necessary Also, I think I'll go with the same harddrives, and if it doesn't like it? Damn. Reformat. no loss. Would swapping the 300W Power Supply with the 250W work? or is that a bad idea? Also...do the retail chips come with heatsinks, or do I need to look about that on my own? ------------------ PIII 500 (Pre CuMine) 393(listed)MB RAM GeForce DDR (Annihilator Pro) Sonic Impact S90 Win2K Advanced Server Logitech Itouch Elite Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer Everglide (HL Giganta) Logitech Quickcam Home etc. etc. etc. -

Why should I switch my sound card OOC? I've read a lot of complaints about CL's Liveware, and my card works perfectly well...nothing special about it, but it plays all the sounds properly, does A3D, and I can have my headphones and speakers plugged in at the same time. Also, I've already committed myself to the Mobo and CPU....and I go to college, studying computer science. I have plenty of experience ****ing with my computer...and I have time to track down BSODs....usually with my computer they tend to be fixable rather easily. ------------------ PIII 500 (Pre CuMine) 393(listed)MB RAM GeForce DDR (Annihilator Pro) Sonic Impact S90 Win2K Advanced Server Logitech Itouch Elite Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer Everglide (HL Giganta) Logitech Quickcam Home etc. etc. etc. -

Compaq does the same thing. Once you reformat and use an MS Windows disk as opposed to THEIR restore CDs, if you call, they yell at you. Even if it's just a hardware problem or question that has nothing to do with THEIR software. It's things like this that make me wish I'd built from power supply up. But if you find an answer, I'd like to hear about it too, as I'm still trying to convince my parents to do away with Win98, and go to 2000....and I know their keyboard won't work... If you've got a few bucks sitting around, your best bet would probably be to just go out and buy a new keyboard, like Logitech's Microsoft's Internet keyboards. They cost about 30 dollars, and they are Win2K compatible with the right software. ANd you can burn the old keyboard in efigy, which is always fun. As for the soundcard, can't really help you. ------------------ PIII 500 (Pre CuMine) 393(listed)MB RAM GeForce DDR (Annihilator Pro) Sonic Impact S90 Win2K Advanced Server Logitech Itouch Elite Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer Everglide (HL Giganta) Logitech Quickcam Home etc. etc. etc.

Anyone get the feeling that Microsoft kind of ****ed up on this one? Not that they stuck with IE 5.01(SP1), but that they should have released them in reversed order(IE 5.5 after SP1)? It would have made a bit more sense, and saved the modem users a lot of (redundant)download time. ------------------ PIII 500 (Pre CuMine) 393(listed)MB RAM GeForce DDR (Annihilator Pro) Sonic Impact S90 Win2K Advanced Server Logitech Itouch Elite Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer Everglide (HL Giganta) Logitech Quickcam Home etc. etc. etc.
