I recently purchased a laptop, and am debating what to do with it... It's a K6-2 400, with 64 RAM(96 is my ram works in it), a 4.3GB Hdd, and a Virge Video Card(2MB). The video card basically negates playing too many games....but that's ok, since I bought this as a workstation for me, to take around, and generally use when not near my computer. It comes installed with Windows 98SE. I'm wondering which OS I should go with between: Win98SE(reconfigured to my liking), Win2K Prof, or WinMe? My desktop is running Win2K Advanced Server, So I'm thinking it might be nice to have a DOS-Kerneled machine as well. I don't need multi-week uptimes, as the battery only lasts 2 hours... Security means nothing to me, although if I do go with W2K, I will convert to NTFS. And as for games: Counterstrike, which I know works fine in W2K. The thing is, I only use my FTP at certain times... and either for Warez, or personal use. I spent all day wondering the same things. What I'm going to do next week? Find the programs that allow redistribution, so that I don't ahve to be on the internet to upgrade my PCs, as 1 of mine doesn't even have a modem

I've tried to update my dad's computer to IE5.5(he's on Win98SE), and when it gets to where it starts downloading, it asks for a network password, for site and domain IPs of 204.somethingorother. WTF is going on? This computer didn't install IE5.01SP1 properly, and now IE5.5 won't even start? God I love my computer. It cooperates! Anyone else have these problems, or know a solution(i.e. where I could download the ENTIRE 87MB stand-alone file that has all the updates)?

It's not my computer anyway They can wait all they want. I'll stick with being the guy to download the new stuff ASAP. How do I operate an FTP off of here? ServU keeps saying port 21 is open

I've got a bit of a problem, that I'd think would have an easy fix...but I can't find it. I want to move, not resize, my Virtual Memory Swap File, to another harddrive(so that i have more free space on my C drive). Is this possible? if So, how?

OF all the games I've tried, only Red Alert for Win95 didn't work. I even had the old Dos Quake installed and working properly(although this is when I was dual booting Win98SE and 2000Professional). Modern games will, more likely than not, work. And for me, they tend to work better. Not only is the game performance better, but when I get bored of the game and come back, my system resources are still at an acceptable level, rather than dropping from 87 % to 63. If you have patience and enough intelligence to figure things out and tweak properly, Win2000 is the way to go. Although, on the laptop I'm buying, I intend on throwing WinME on it. I don't need week-long up time stability on it...That way my desktop is running an NT kernel(server), and my laptop the DOS kernel(portable/workstation). 384 helps more Now if only I can find a firewall program that cooperates with HalfLife...it's caused cold-locks...that even the all powerful Ctrl Alt Del can't fix. I just splurged and bumped my RAM amount from 160(1 128 and 1 32) to 384(3 128) I figured this would help keep my system running well when I start using it as a file, web, media, proxy server this fall. I was just wondering why I would see no real difference between the 160 and the 384....unless I was far enough in excess with the 160 that 384 is just REALLY excessive. Another quick question When I took out the 32 MB RAM, I intended on ebaying it...but my laptop I'm buying says SDRAM..but that s all it says would it operate PC100 RAM? Most games tend to have problems with Dual processors. Don't blame the OS immediately. I'm running better in W2K than I EVER did in Win98. Games run smoother, and don't crash my computer. To change the logon screensaver (the white box that has your version of Windows 2000 or NT(I assume) popping around the screen), locate the screensaver called "logon.scr" in your Winnt/System32 directory. Rename it as something like "defaultlogon.scr", and rename the screensaver you want to use as "logon.scr". Reboot and wait, and the new screensaver should be showing. *This works for the screensavers installed, 3rd party screensavers that require more files, might not work...if anyone tries this, please tell me how it works out. I'm currently running Windows 2000 on my Tower PC, but am running Win98SE(and will be running a beta of WinME) on my laptop. Is there a way I can connect the two through the modem directly for file transfers?
