  1. Hi, Ever since I did a fresh install of Windows XP Pro, I have been having problems with internet access. When I'm actively using the computer during the day, it works fine. However, when I leave my computer on overnight (with power settings to always on; NIC is set to never power off) and try to access the internet the next morning, my internet access is gone. I can't even ping my gateway. If I try to uninstall/reinstall my NIC or tamper with the settings in any way, it locks up (The NIC property window stops responding and cannot be closed). Of course, if I restart the system, it works fine. Now this sounds to me like a driver problem, but I have installed the latest NIC drivers (directly from Broadcom's site) and it has not cured the problem. More confusing is the fact that this problem does not occur with Windows 2000. Sadly, this reminds me of the days of Win9x, where you could not run your system over 24 hours without a restart. I really hope this is not the case, otherwise I'll be forced to go back to 2000. Can anyone give me a clue as to what I need to do to get this fixed?
  2. Thanks for the help guys. I think the BIOS update may have corrected the problem.
  3. My motherboard is an ASUS P4G8X with integrated gigE, Broadcom is the chipset manufacturer. This problem occured before I updated the drivers from Broadcom's site, so I'm not sure what else to do. I would download drivers off ASUS's site, but apparently their site is ALWAYS busy, so it will not let me. Same goes for BIOS updates and chipset drivers, while everything else is up-to-date. I'm all out of NICs, but I suppose I could go buy a cheap-o one to figure if this an isolated problem. If it is possible to update the firmware on the NIC, I am clueless as to how to do it. How should I proceed, and do you have any idea where I can get newer ASUS drivers? Thanks for your help.

    Need Help with FTP.EXE

I'm trying to use FTP.EXE to send and get files with spaces in them. For instance, it works fine with a file such as "myfile.txt" but fails with "my file.txt". Does anyone know how to get this working? I tried using the 'literal' command with 'RETR my file.txt' but that seems to hang the software. I am quite aware that I could be using another FTP client, but I need FTP.EXE to work because I've tied it into my program. If you don't know how to solve the problem with FTP.EXE, suggesting another command-line program would be useful. Thanks in advance. GHz http://www.planetquake.com/vortex ghz@planetquake.com

    Need Help with FTP.EXE

Yes, my application creates the script files dynamically based upon user input. If you're really curious, I'm using the FTP as a subsystem to transfer character data to and from my Quake 2 server to a master FTP database. This allows players of my Q2 RPG mod to play their character from any server, provided they have my special software (and FTP.EXE of course!). Thanks for the help guys, I'll try out your suggestions tonight. GHz http://www.planetquake.com/vortex ghz@planetquake.com

  7. Hi, Months after XP's release, I finally decided to take the plunge and upgrade from Win2k Professional to WinXP Professional. Overall, I'm impressed... especially at the way-improved boot times and polish of the GUI. However, I am disappointed at XP's poor multitasking performance compared with that of 2000. In my spare time I make mods for FPS games, and I need to run MSVC 6.0 (my compiler) along with a few instances of the FPS game I'm working on. In 2000, this isn't much of a problem. I can usually have a few game windows open with minimum resolution settings, along with my compiler, and the performance is fine. I try to do the same thing in XP, and as soon as I launch one game window, the whole system slows down. Looking at the task manager, I can see that XP is letting the game hog all resources. I tried playing with the thread priority, but it had little or no effect (sometimes it just crashed my system). My question is this: Has anyone observed this problem? Is there any way to improve the multitasking environment of XP? If not, I'll have to go back to 2000
  8. No, I haven't tried SP1, but I don't see how a service pack could change something like this. I also don't have .NET server, and I don't know much about that anyway.

    HELP! IE5 Question

Does anyone know how to setup IE5 so it makes multiple connections when downloading from a server? By default it is set at 2, and this really is annoying. I try to download 5 things from the same site, and it only allows me to get 2 at a time. Yeah, I could get a download manager, but I don't wanna bother. Any help apprectiated. Thanks, GHz

    HELP! IE5 Question

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I can't find that string anywhere in my registry I'm running IE5, and the first build (retail) of Win2k PRO. Please let me know if you have any other ideas. GHz
  11. I have a simple network setup at home. My gaming PC is connected to my server PC via a 10mbit hub. The server has control of the internet connection, which it shares with the gaming PC with ICS. I want to share a folder to another computer on the internet. The gaming PC has no problem accessing the server PC's shares (or vice versa) using a login and password. However for some reason, when a computer on the internet tries to access the server's share, it gets an error "A duplicate name already exists on the network" or something like that. I tried using every login and password I have setup for the server, and each time I get the same error. Can someone explain what I'm doing wrong here? Thanks in advance. ------------------ GHz

    HELP! File Sharing Network Error

There is no problem with communication between the server and client PC (local). The problem is when a computer on the internet (not local) tries to access a share on the server (the computer with the connection to the internet). ------------------ GHz
  13. I know this has been mentioned before, but I can't seem to remember the .inf file I need to edit. FYI im talking about getting the reference 3.78 TNT2 drivers to run the proper refresh rates in OpenGL games. I thought it was nv4_disp.inf, but I did a search for it on C: and it found nothing. Hmm... I'm tired of 60hz damnit Any help apreciated ;] ------------------ GHz

    Sharing Over Internet

You guys are probably going to think I'm crazy trying to do this, but oh well... I need to share a folder across the internet using a Win2k Pro box. The folder contains some data files that need read/write access. Obviously I want to do this as securely as possible, as I don't want some malicious user hacking me. Any ideas on how to do this? I tried installing IIS and using Internet Sharing, but it lets any user in. Besides, I don't like the complexity of IIS ------------------ GHz

    Sharing Over Internet

Well, I guess I could do that... but reading thru the M$ documentation seems futile to me. I don't know how to setup IIS! Are there any sites around for dummies like me, that explain how this is done? I appreciate the help ;] ------------------ GHz

No openGL all of a sudden! HELP!

I had the same problem you had. I installed the 5.22 drivers, which caused quake 1 and 2 to stop working. I tried uninstalling the drivers to no avail, I deleted all of the appropriate video driver files in the /system32 dir, switched back and forth between default TNT2 drivers and the old drivers I used 3.78 (I believe), yet I could not get things working correctly. I finally gave up in frustration, and formatted my C partition. Thereafter I reinstalled Win2k PRO and everything works fine now. Thanks big-time Nvidia Now how exactly did you get those 5.22 drivers uninstalled? I thought I tried everything! ------------------ GHz
  20. Hi! I'm a new user to this board, and I figured *someone* here may be able to answer my newbie question. Here goes: I want to enable remote server administration via the Telnet Server, but I have no idea how! Can someone help? The purpose of this is to allow a select group of people to admin a gaming server of mine (quake2). Sometimes it crashes, and the application needs to be restarted. I'd also like them to be able to upload game updates and install/run them remotely. I don't know if the Telnet Server is the best/easiest way to go, but I figured it wouldn't be that difficult ;p Thanks in advance for any replies ;] ------------------ GHz

    Telnet Server Administration?

I'm sorry, I should have been more specific with my question. I know how to start the service, but I don't know how to configure it (adding users, permissions, etc.). I only want them to have enough access to admin the q2 server, and that's it. Can this be done with the Telnet Server, or should I use another application? Thanks. ------------------ GHz
