I'm running NT 4.0 SP 6A. I have the ASUS P3BF Motherboard. I was told that my USB port is not recognized by NT. Is this true? I was also told that my AGP slot is not recognised by NT. Is this true? If the answer is true to the questions above, is there a way to get NT to recognize them. I have an AGP video card and I would like to install a web cam in the future. PART 2 Is it possable to install WIN 2000 on my system as a dual boot. If so can you give me an idea on how to go about doing this. Please keep in mind I have limited skills in this department. Many thanks. Regards Joe

Clutch it was a general comment made by the information givin on this board about service pack 2 problems and driver problem with certain vidio cards and so on. I will wait until thoes issues are delt with before I change to 2000. I will be changing in the near future but as I understand it there are problems with the latest updates. I must addmit that Win 2000 is becoming more attractive as an OS I have heard good thing about it, but I figure I will wait a little longer before the change. Kind Regards Joe

Uykucu Thanks for the info. But I don't have Win 2000 and im not sure that I would want to have all of the problems that come along with win 2000. I haven't heard to many great things about it, expecially the latest survice pack, also there are a lot of companies the still have problems writing drivers for it, so I think I will sit back for a while until they get there act together... Cheers

imtim83 I would highly recomend a Viewsonic. I have the 21 inch pro and it's amazing, so is there customer service. When I first bought my screen I had a problem with it they didn't have that model in stak because it was a year end model so they sent a new one up to Toronto from Califonia with no questions asked. I had it at my door step in 2 days. I was impressed.

Hello Now I know this is an NT forum but my friend is running win 98 and she is having problems with shutting down. She says it takes about 5 minuets to shut the computer down. She just uses it for office work nothing major. She probably hasen't defraged in a about 6 months, but I still don't think that would be the cause of a 5 min shutdown. I have been telling her to get another 64 megs of Ram, she is currently running with 64 megs Any help would be appreciated. Cheers

Thanks guys..sorry about the improperly placed post. Cheers:o

This is one hell of a topic I love it. I legally bought my copy of NT 4.0 several years ago. There were two occasions when I had to use MS Tech support, what a waist of time. e mail after e mail and still the problem wasn’t solved. (DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT IT COST FOR PHONE SUPPORT) The last time I called it was ONE DAY after my tech support ended, they wouldn’t even talk to me. You know how the problem was solved...a virus solved it for me..had to do a complete reinstall. Next time I will take my friend up and use a pirated copy. I do not bleed for Bill Gates. Secondly I'm a student and I survive of off pirated copies for learning. Has anyone priced student versions of Cad software????? No can do, way to much money. But I can say this I don't believe people should us pirated Cad, or any other software for profit. I will eventually freelance once I graduate, and I can promise I will use legally purchased software to run my business, but right now I can't afford the software I use for education. So as far as I'm concerned thank God for pirating for the purpose of education, and education only......that's why I get A+s in all my cad courses

I have 256 megs of ram. Is there a significant increase in perfomance if I was to add an extra 128 megs or would it remain the same. Ive heard that there is a point were more ram will not help the speed of your computer, what would that point be. Thanks
-
Well your right.ram is cheep. I just picked up 128 PC 133 for 39 dollars canadian, regular price 55 dollars. Last time I bought ram I had to sell a kidney. But I don't belive I have noticed any speed differance on my system. But at that price who cares, it will be a help with my Cad programs im sure. ummmm I may run up a get some more..I luvs a bargan:D

Hello. I have been using Diskeeper to defrag my hard drive. In the last 4 days I have defraged it 4 times. After it defrags I get the report, the report reads as this. Findings on C: Diskeeper has completed a defragmentation run on this volume and there remain 5 fragmented files and 2386 excess file fragments. (There were 2634 excess file fragments before the defragmentation run, and now there are 9% less.) The average number of fragments per file is 1.05. This volume is moderately fragmented, with 10% of the total volume space available for defragmentation. This level of free space is so low that performance is suffering from that fact alone. Indeed, fragmentation is the least of your worries under these conditions. Clear some files off this volume to achieve a minimum of 20% free space for acceptable performance. Since the number of excess fragments changed by only 9% on the last defragmentation run, there is a good possibility that Diskeeper has done the best it can do with this volume at this time. You should schedule Diskeeper to run considerably more often than it has been running to reduce the current fragmentation and maintain a lower level of fragmentation Could someone explain what this means. I have 1.5 gig left on my hard drive so I don't understand what it is saying. SECOND QUESTION. In my temp folder I have 65 megs worth of files. What files can I delete, I have tried to delete the temp files but in some cases the system won't let me, it says they are shared files, there are also set uo exe's in there can they be deleted??. THIRD QUESTION. Once I have installed a program and it is now installed in Program files can the original exe on C drive be delegated or is this still necessary to run the program Thanks Regards Joe

PS I'm using the full version of Diskeeper 6.0. I have Norton Speed disk but I was just experimenting with different softwares and heard good things about Diskeeper. Cheers:D
-
Thanks. But CrazyKillerMan im using NT 4.0 not Win 2000. And as far as what dos said, yes it would be stupid to download a program and then deleat it, but I thought that when you download a program onto C drive, then install it (it usualy defalts to program files for instalation) that the original download on to C drive is no longer needed. I have never erased them befor but I need to clear some space off my drive otherwise I would just leave them. If I need them I will keep them. Thats why I was confused by what Diskeeper was saying. That I only have 10% of the total volume space available for defragmentation. This level of free space is so low that performance is suffering from that fact alone. Indeed, fragmentation is the least of your worries under these conditions. Clear some files off this volume to achieve a minimum of 20% free space for acceptable performance. I still have 1.4 gig left, if it thinks that is low wait untill I install a 600mg program that I need, then what. haha oh ya another hard drive. anyone have one cheeeeeeeeep Thanks

Hello I have the ASUS P3B-F Motherboard and I'm trying to find out the fastest processor I can put in it. I have looked through my Bios, looked throught the manual that came with it, I also have looked at my screen during boot up to see if I could sell the info but I couldn't. This is the info I need to find below. This is what the Asus tech support gave me. Can anyone give me an idea how to find this info. Dear customer Thanks for choosing ASUSTeK. Please firstly check your motherboard. If the PCB version is R1.03 or later and BIOS version is 1004 or later, it can support to Pentium III 1GHz processor (100MHz FSB) and Celeron 800MHz CPU. Otherwise, it can only support to Pentium III 600MHz (100MHz FSB, slot 1). Thanks Regards Joe

Love my Matrox ( great for Cad) but I would love to have the nvidia. Cheers:D

Shamrock Sorry to hear about your problems. I probably will get pounded for this but here it goes. First. Were you using this Win 98 on this GAMING MACHINE before, and if so did you have these problems while running them under win 98??? Second. Why did you switch to Win 2000, which I belive was brought out primaraly for the business community to replace NT 4.0 and not designed with the gamming industry in mind. ( im ducking now) Would it not be better to stick with Win 98 if your machine is strictly for gamming like you stated in your post. Hope everything works out. Regards Joe
-
One other thing VOL3. I would spend a bit of time looking throught this site and see what problems people are having with Win 2000 before you make your mind up. Eather way best of luck with your choice. PS I think you will like this forum there are a lot of smart and very helpfull people in here. Cheers
-
Clutch. When you say functionality, do you mean compatability with hardware. If so I belive that most of the people that post on this forum are having problems in that area. Almost every post I read in this forum is someone having problems with the way Win 2000 is acting when they install eather software or hardware, or just general problems. Like you said, or someone else said in this post, the reason you don't hear of anyone complaining about NT here is most of thoes problems have been sorted out in NT 4.0 already. Why go through that again just for a few additional perks that Win 2000 offers. If a person was a big gammer I can see going to win 2000. I do belive that a major amount of companies didn't bother to switch to 2000 because of all the reported problems it was having. I wonder if thats the reason they are comming out with this new OS. ?????? Kind Regards Joe

LOL yes we do. Peace Clutch I'm interested in what graphics card you use to do your cad with. Thanks:D
