If you actually had a NEED for Windows 2000 Data Center, I'm sure you could afford to buy it. In fact, if you actually had a need for it, I'd bet that Microsoft would give you a time-limited version. ------------------ "This year will go down in history. Will ZoneAlarm work with mIRC? More specifically, can I use firewall software to mask my IP address on a DALNet server so that anyone doing a /whois will not be able to see it? OR...is there another way of doing it?

Another method, which may be perfectly suitable for your two-machine LAN, assuming security is not an issue, is to goto Control Panel>Users & Passwords>Advanced>Advanced and click on Users in the left pane, right click on Guest>Properties, and uncheck the boxes, "User cannot change password," and "Account is Disabled." ------------------ "This year will go down in history. Yup, you're right. You know, somebody ought to do something about those compatibility problems. Maybe start a website, where you could list hardware and software compatibilities with NT/2000, have file download links, news, and maybe even have message boards. You could even call it something like, um, say NT Compatible. [This message has been edited by DeadCats (edited 17 August 2000).]

The problem probably lies more with your telephone line than with Win2K. Check all your connections inside the house, then call the phone company and complain. If the problem lies outside your house, generally there's no charge for a service call. ------------------ "This year will go down in history. The services you can disable or set to manual depend on your specific setup, whether or not you're on a LAN, etc. The only real way to decide what services are necessary for your specific machine and situation is testing by trial-and-error. Goto Component Services and take a look around. If the service is set to Manual, but hasn't started, you might try setting it to Disabled. Then reboot, run everything you can think of, including your printer(s). If everything works okay, you can safely leave it Disabled. If the setting is Automatic, try changing it to Manual, reboot, run everything again, and see if it has started. If it has, you might as well set it back to Automatic. YMMV. This is the only REAL way I know of to slim-down the services. Be prepared to spend a few hours doing it, and be prepared to boot into Safe Mode a few times.

The proper installation order, assuming you want a dual-boot machine, is Win98 FIRST, then a full install of Win2K, each in its own partition. Win2K will give you a multi-boot loader at startup, with the option of choosing which OS to load. (Yes, I know, some folks have gotten away with installing both OS's in the same partition, but why risk it?) Personally, I view Partition Magic as a utility-of-last-resort. I've seen it do wonderful things, and I've also seen it totally corrupt a data partition. Aside from the time involved, nothing beats a clean install and data restoration from a known good backup source, IMHO. ------------------ "This year will go down in history. The only complaining I've heard much of was about the problems with some firewall software versions, which I believe have been updated now. That, and early downloaders like me *****ing about the size (85Mb on a 56K modem) of the sp1network.exe download, which was the first version offered. ------------------ "This year will go down in history. First of all, you've got a 'confusion' of CD-R burning software on your PC...no wonder your operating system is so confused! I burn anywhere from 20-100 data/software CD-R's a week on my old HP 8100+ using ONLY ECDC 4.0, and ne'er a problem...but, that's the ONLY CD-burning software I have installed on my miserly machine (PII, 333Mhz, 192Mb RAM), also. Never a problem with the original Win2K, any of the installed updates, or with the installed SP1. I can only speak from my personal experience, but all I currently use, AND have installed, is ECDC4.02d but have used Adaptec 4.0 all through their product line, including 4.02c, all with no problems. I do NOT have any other CD burning software on my system...period...including DirectCD. I can't speak for all of ECDC 4.02d's functions: I'm only burning software from my HDD to new Imation 650Mb/74 Min. CD-R's, not doing any copy from CD-to-CD or duplication functions, no overburning, etc. For us, the software does exactly what it's supposed to do. Again, this is what works for me. YMMV. ------------------ "This year will go down in history. For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration. I have no idea where you could find a RAM drive utility for Win2K unless, of course, you have a copy of DOS 6 laying around somewhere. BUT I am just curious as all get out what the heck you want a RAM drive for? ------------------ "This year will go down in history. For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration. I'll second what Johnny said. The move from 128 to 192Mb RAM made a huge difference. ------------------ "This year will go down in history. WTF is ZoneAlarm? and BlackIce, for that matter?

Installation of SP1 went off without a hitch.

The, "page cannot be displayed" error (and then hitting Refresh and it does) was a problem with IE 5.5 beta and it's been carried forward with the final version, or so it seems. I sometimes get that problem, too. I wonder if a clean install of 5.5, without the beta being on my machine, might cure that. Hmmm.... ------------------ "This year will go down in history. Strange that it would work for me, but not for you. In fact, I just tested it and it worked perfectly. However, I'm running as Administrator, in a Workgroup and not a Domain. That may be the difference. Anyway, GREAT that you found an answer to your problem. Now you can really lord it over your IS department!

Right on, Rik, DosFreak, DosFreak, DosFreak, DosFreak, and DosFreak! In fact, my message to game developers would be, "If you don't want to take the time and energy to make sure your games run for THE premier operating system; the BEST gaming environment, then screw you! I don't HAVE to take the time or spend the money to BUY your stinkin' product!" :-PpPpPpPp ------------------ "This year will go down in history. whoisurdaddy, you've got something else wrong with your system if NAV2000 appears to be screwing it up. I, and quite a few other people in here having been running it for quite some time with no problems. In fact, it appears to be the AV program of choice for Win2K users. ------------------ "This year will go down in history. For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration. Jeeze, some IS departments are really 'brilliant' huh? Goto your desktop. Right-click on the My Computer icon. Right-click on Properties. Right-click on Network Identification. Do what you want there. There's several other ways of doing it also. Have fun screaming at your IS people, I would. ------------------ "This year will go down in history. All I know is that I have WMP 7 installed over Adaptec ECDC 4.02c (WMP 7 was installed last), and I just got done burning 30 CD-R's with no problems at all. I should note that these were data CD-R's, not music CD-R's, AND that I don't have Direct CD installed. ------------------ "This year will go down in history. IE 5.5 works well for me, also. Enough of the scaremongering, unless you have something from your own experience to post. ------------------ "This year will go down in history. If all the program is doing is checking config.sys for a BUFFERS=n statement, then why not create one? ------------------ "This year will go down in history. Is it possible for a CD burned on a Macintosh (burner make/model unknown) to be read in a PC CD-ROM drive? The files burned to disc will be JPEG's.

The Register is currently reporting an anticipated release date for SR-1 to be July 24. They had originally reported a release date of July 17.
