Yeah, disabling the messenger service prevents you from receiveing messages; it does not prevent you from sending them.

pr-man: You do realise that the entire article is an deliberate joke by the author don't you? (I'm just amazed by the number of people who have not actually realised this)

I'm pretty sure Microsoft must be blocking ICMP requests, since I can't even ping windowsupdate.microsoft.com but I can still get to it via HTTP. Or something's really screwed with their setup.

The network itself is usually the bottleneck, not the interface between the PCI bus and the NIC, so even if there is a difference I doubt it would actually have any effect.

Installing the upside-down movie patch (which I believe is what the link posted above is) fixes the issue, since all it does is install a newer version of the video codec.

Quote: Quote: I got a Question. 199.199.199.* on and internal network? I've never seen that range used before. You learn something new all the time. try one of these instead. 10.0.0.0 — 10.255.255.255 169.254.0.0 — 169.254.255.255 172.16.0.0 — 172.31.255.255 192.168.0.0 — 192.168.255.255 I use 100.100.100.100 and 100.100.100.200 for my w98 / XP,Linux machine. I know 192.*.*.* is what is recomended to use but my network runs with no problems. What can go wrong if you use other internal network addresses. Does it harm anyone or can it interfere with the internet. For example what if I use 216.239.35.100 (Google) will it interfere? This is exactly the reason. If your IP address happens to be the same on your LAN as a site on the Internet and your LAN is connected to the Internet (NAT, ICS etc) then you (and anyone else on the same LAN) will be unable to reach the Internet site. In fact, due to the way subnetting works, you'd be unable to access any computer on the Internet with an IP in the range 100.100.100.0 - 100.100.100.255 ("best case scenario" assuming a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0). The IP ranges Captwista mentioned are reserved for Local Area Networks and so will be guaranteed never to cause such a conflict.

Quote: CRacking the password is easy if you have the hard drive. Reset the admin password (no probleem i can do it in 2 seconds), then login and reset every other password using users and passwords applet. In Windows XP, if you try to change another user's password (ie. using User Management) it will warn you that if you do so, they will no longer be able to access their secure files. Like this: Now I'm not sure if this applies to Win2k and the warning is just not there or not. But resetting the account password should not work. Quote: Well in windows 2000 EFS can apparently by bypassed 3rd party software Hmm, I was led to believe it was more secure than that. Ah well.

Some obvious things to check: Subnet mask set correctly on the XP machine? (eg. 255.255.255.0) Some kind of firewall running on the Unix machine? (might be deliberately set to block pings)

Cracking the user account passwords isn't as easy as it seems. The most common way of breaking into a Windows 2000/XP machine is to delete the file containing the passwords. However, if you do this you'll never gain access to those encrypted files ever again. Since that's not an option, you'll have to try things the hard way (dictionary cracker etc) which puts it on the same level as any other kind of encryption.

Yeah, I'd recommend CDex. Much like Audiograbber etc, but free.

Quote: P.S.=> Xiven, is this freeware too? apk Well it comes as part of Seagate Crystal Reports which is far from free, but the program itself is freely available to download from their website with no mention of any license restrictions.

Here's a great little program with a nice GUI that lets you see what resources (eg. dlls) are being used by a program, or lets you see what programs are using a particular dll: http://support.crystaldecisions.com/communityCS/FilesAndUpdates/modules.zip

Quote: Someone at the company I work for received this email: Quote: ...Please call Microsoft Technical Support on 0871 xxx xxxx for your Microsoft Windows security update.... I reckon someone has just decided to setup a high cost phone line and see how many people he can sucker in. Nice in theory, but an 087x number is national rate, not premium rate. Therefore I'm pretty sure that only BT (or whoever your phone company is) will profit from it. EDIT: No I'm wrong, sorry: Quote: http://www.tilehurst.net/infopool/phone_codes.html 0871: internet services (may be a charge) So feel free to ignore what I just said It's an important point though, BT really need to inform people better as to which numbers have which rates. I shouldn't have to do a google search to find it out.

I'm fairly sure it affected WinNT, no idea if it was fixed in Win2k or WinXP though. Windows uptime is stored as a 32-bit number storing the number of milliseconds since it started. This means the maximum length of time it can go up to before resetting is: (2^32) / (1000 * 60 * 60 * 24) = ~49.7 days Which is about 7 weeks and 17 hours

I see from the other thread that you've managed to get hold of a copy of the App Compat toolkit 1.1. Firstly, well done, that thing's almost impossible to find Secondly, for a guide on how to get FF7 to work try http://www.ffseven.com/aboutff7/index.shtml (it's a bit out of date but it'll probably do). Finally, a good place to check out if you're still having problems with it is http://forums.qhimm.com (EDIT: though that seems to be down at the moment...)

Quote: Me: When was the last time you have had your automatic transmission fluid and filter changed in any of your cars? Half of this board: Change my transmission fluid? There's a filter? Other half of this board: Ermm... I drive a manual thank you very much.... Seriously though, you have to pass a test to drive a car, but you don't have to do anything to use a computer. This wouldn't be a problem if these people never went on the Internet, but sadly they do and since they constitute about 90% of computer users out there it is a problem. This is why I think that automatic up[censored] is a very good thing as it will help to prevent these users' machines from being used as anonymizing proxies / drones in a DDOS attack etc.

For those of you who can't get to the page because it's down (or if it has since been fixed), what's happened is the hackers have modified the news admin pages so that anyone can add news posts. And that's exactly what a lot of people seem to be doing.... Here's an example of one: http://www.granzeau.com:8080/~gonzo/PR_story.cfm.html (source: Slashdot.org)

Quote: When bringing up my new system that has XP home this frequently takes more than one attempt before it actually succeeds. Once it is up it usually stays up but not always. I send a status report to microsoft and they say that the problem is caused by a device driver but can't say which one. If they can't say which one how do they know it is a device driver? Could you give some specific details about the computer hardware? 'Cause I've seen a very similar error to this on a PC I built (nForce motherboard).

Quote: can you play online with dark age of camelot without paying? on certain servers? No, AFAIK you can't. I think you get 1 month's "free" trial (you still have to pay for the CD and serial number) when you first sign up to the game unless it's changed since I played it or is different on the US servers. I stopped playing it because: a) it was taking up way too much time, I used to be on cable internet, but am now on a modem that gets disconnected every 2 hours = not so fun. But it is a good fun game if you like that kinda thing.

Quote: Um, what is "boxing day"? I have heard of it before mentioned in the past on various forums... is it a UK thing? To be honest I don't know what the holiday is all about, all I know is that in the UK we have a bank holiday on the 26th and it's called Boxing Day... Well, after a quick google search, here is your answer: http://www.snopes2.com/holidays/christmas/boxing.htm

Merry Christmas all! Damn, too late, it's 1am on Boxing Day now....

Yes, use KazaaLite instead, which has all the spyware removed (think it's at www.kazaalite.tk).
