I already answered this one in Applications....

Is it a USB keyboard? If so, you'll have to go into your BIOS settings and set USB keyboard support to BIOS rather than OS.

Quote: Hey kaiyin You said that ATA100 is working now, but how can you tell? I have an ATA100 Maxtor 30gig on my Abit KT7-A Raid and it still runs slower than my main disk which is UDMA 66. I tried running HD Tach and Sisoft Sandra and they both reported it being damned slow. In the RAID Array setup, its selected as UDMA Mode 5. ..... %< ~snip~ Homer If it's on your RAID array, it should be using the Highpoint drivers and therefore Windows treats it as SCSI, not IDE. If you are not using the Highpoint drivers, you damn well should be. Since it's SCSI, the ATA100 patch from Microsoft has absolutely zero effect since it will already be running at ATA100 -- Xiven

That's Winamp 3 Alpha that is.

You can turn it off in advanced options. Can't remember where cos I'm back on 5.5 now, but it can be disabled.

Try: Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced Untick "Display a notification about every script error" and tick "Disable script debugging". If this works then the reason you've been seeing those error messages is that you've been visiting websites that were written by a two-year old (ie. it's a javascript error). Nothing wrong with Windows or your browser. -- Xiven

To increase speed browsing network shares, delete this registry key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RemoteComputer\NameSpace\{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}] (as found in this thread only a little way down the board: http://www.ntcompatible.com/vb/showthread.php?threadid=13640 ) To increase speed of "My Network Places" listing either install WINS (if you have a Win2k server machine on your network) or create an lmhosts file in the directory \winnt\system32\drivers\etc There should be an example file (lmhosts.sam) in the same directory to help you. -- Xiven

I don't have any clue as to why Armada is not working, I'm just curious as to where you got WinNT Service Pack 9 from Also, I wasn't aware that Armada could be run on NT4 at all seeing as it uses DirectX quite heavily. Try the official ST: Armada Forums at http://www.st-armada.com Someone there will probably have a solution for you.

I'm guessing that it would be your Ultra-ATA 66 controller. Without the correct drivers, your Western Digital 20gig HD ATA66 hard drive is probably only running at ATA 33. Go find those drivers! -- Xiven

Well if you're going to be pedantic, it's all about powers of 2. 1 bit = 1 binary digit (two-state device) 4 bits = 1 nybble (pretty useless measurement but has a great name) 8 bits = 1 byte (well it has been for a while, but bytes used to be 6 or 7 bits) 1,024 (2^10) bytes = 1 kB (kiloByte) 1,048,576 (2^20) bytes = 1024 kB = 1MB (MegaByte) 1,073,741,824 (2^30) bytes = 1048576 kB = 1024 MB = 1GB (Gigabyte) Then of course we have the slightly larger ones 1,099,511,627,776 (2^40) bytes = 1024 GB = 1 TB (TeraByte) 1,125,899,906,842,624 (2^50) bytes = 1024 TB = 1 PetaByte 1,152,921,504,606,846,976 (2^60) bytes = 1024 PetaByte = 1 ExaByte 1,180,591,620,717,411,303,424 (2^70) bytes = 1024 ExaBytes = 1 ZettaByte 1,208,925,819,614,629,174,706,176 (2^80) bytes = 1024 ZettaBytes = 1 YottaByte I think that my old Vic20 had 5 kB RAM which means my current machine has 52428.8 times the memory capacity of a machine built just over 20 years ago. As for storage space, well, how much could you fit on a cassette tape? Not much anyway... -- Xiven

Here's mine on Win2kPro: Hidden all desktop items (don't use desktop) using X-Teq X-Setup (nice util) Lots of custom quicklaunch bars on the taskbar.

Oh yeah, and no. 1 rule, STOP USING THAT HARD DRIVE NOW

Errmm... no. The software solutions work just fine and are a helluva lot cheaper provided you haven't already overwritten the data. There is a program called Fast File Undelete (FFU) at http://www.dtidata.com which does cost some money, but not really a huge lot, and a trial version is available. There are some other ones available but I can't remember their names. There was a thread on this topic before. Try searching for it. Can't bear to see people waste money -- Xiven

Yep, either that or you run the install from add/remove programs -> Add new programs. It's a feature of Win2k Server to stop random miscellaneous dll files being added to your system32 directory. -- Xiven

In IE, go to Tools -> Internet Options In the temporary internet files section, click "Settings..." Click "View objects..." That will show all installed plugins including downloaded activex controls. Remove them all. -- Xiven

"It's the old, old story - droid meets droid, droid becomes chameleon, droid loses chameleon, chameleon turns into blob, droid gets blob back again. Blob meets blob, blob goes off with blob and droid loses blob, chameleon and droid. How many times have we seen that story?" "Mr Flibble's very cross..." Post number 100.... -- Xiven

Rimmerworld comes to mind. (if you don't know what Rimmerworld is then .... well ... why not?) -- Xiven

With old serial (big chunky connector) keyboards this is a very common problem. It still occurs with certain key combos on PS/2 keyboards though (up-arrow + left-arrow + space does it i think). Since your keyboard has Windows keys on it I'd assume it's a PS/2 keyboard. I'm really not sure if replacing it would do any good or not to be honest. -- Xiven

You've got to admit it's a little odd having the least significant value (the day) in the middle of the date. I prefer the format yyyy-mm-dd. It's far more logical. -- Xiven

Quote: Eh? Why did it block s.h.u.t? You probably mis-typed it or something. As for shutting down your machine there is a prog called shutdown.exe which is available on the Win2k Resource Kit. I believe there's also a shareware file that does the same floating around somewhere. I think it can do both shutdown and restart, but I'm not sure on this. -- Xiven

Dream features - your list of what you wish you could do in
Xiven replied to Pythagoras's topic in Customization & Tweaking
I'd like there to be an easy way of doing this (sorry for the big picture): ie. have a program such as winamp take up a certain portion of the screen and everything else stays out of that space, even when maximised. I currently do this by having ICQ open behind winamp, but it's hardly convenient cos I have to move winamp to the right place each time it starts up. Oh, and you mentioned alpha transparency. Have you tried the transperizer? The home page is down but you can get it from here -- Xiven -
Sharing my ADSL line with other computers with one nic?
Xiven replied to Silent-IQ's topic in Networking
As far as I know, the only 2 ways are to use a router or a machine with 2 NICs, sorry. I'm probably wrong though -- Xiven -
How 'bout: go to your local computer store. Buy a copy of Serious Sam.
