    Anyone do Serious Sam yet?

    Yes you are

    Lazy Game Programmers.

Yes, some game programmers are getting lazy, (much like some OS programmers ) when it comes to optimizing their code. CMR2 is just one example. However Serious Sam is not badly written, the graphics engine is excellent, the network code is nice, it's just that the amount it has to render is going to make it go slow on such an old graphics card. I suspect your problem may possibly come from the fact that your card only has 16MB of memory on board. Quote: <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">"It's funny then, how my system out-preforms a PC with the same RAM, same CPU, but with a GeForce2 GTS ..... Because its tweaked, tuned. This is a software change, NOT hardware, which enables mine to be faster."</font> Which particular machine with a GF2 GTS are you comparing it to? Clearly, whoever that is has done something seriously wrong to their machine to make it under-perform like that. I have a Duron 750 and a GeForce2 MX, which according to you, should run only a little faster than your machine (ie. chug), yet with all details maxed out, this game runs SMOOOOOOTH even with 50 odd enemies on-screen. I seriously recommend to you to upgrade your graphics card to at least an MX, or failing that a TNT2 Ultra (get a card with 32MB memory on board at least). They're cheap cards and your current card is "the weakest link" in your otherwise pretty good system. Regards Xiven

Errrm... it tries to save WHACT.spl (a shockwave flash object). Odd. Do you have irc or icq? If I can get hold of the file somehow it I'll post it somewhere better than geocities

Good News! Compatibility Modes in Win2k

Yeah, that's the way all of the previous patches have worked, but with the March 2001 update, they added that compatibility tab thingy. The only thing I can think of is that they removed it again for some reason (Microsoft is well known for doing things like that). In case you don't believe me, go to http://www.ntcompatible.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/001671.html where others have reported on this compatibility mode also. -- Xiven

    Nero stopped working...#%¤½*

The 4.28 VIA 4-in-1 drivers are well known to screw up IDE controllers in Win2k. Try installing the 4.29 drivers, which should solve the problem. -- Xiven

Whats yours expirience with IBM hard drives?

When the drive starts making noises a hard drive really shouldn't, no amount of chkdsk or other utilities is gonna fix it. My IBM 30GB just died :-( That's 5 drives failed so far out of 11. Not a great ratio. ------------------ Xiven Code: ABit KT7-RAIDD750 @ 850MHz256MB PC100 RAMCreative Labs 3D Blaster GeForce2 MX (Det 10.8.0)Creative Labs SBLive! Good News! Compatibility Modes in Win2k

Install the latest Win2k compatibility update from Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?releaseid=28792 Then, create a shortcut to the app you want to run in compatibility mode, go to the properties of the new shortcut and go to the compatibility tab. -- Xiven [This message has been edited by Xiven (edited 02 April 2001).]

    New Fragging Game

I love this game!! The cooperative multiplay is fantastic. I haven't had so much fun with a game for quite a while now. Having 8 players running along firing miniguns and rocket launchers at huge barrages of enemies is just so refreshing and great fun. -- Xiven

    Starcraft on Win2k

Strange, I had that problem before, but since I reinstalled windows a few weeks ago it's been fine. I really couldn't say what differences between the two installs there are. Same drivers, same service pack etc... -- Xiven
  18. Fantastic. This method also works nicely with that annoying "From ICQ" folder that keeps returning if ICQ is installed. -- Xiven

    Big PRoblem

Sorry, if I'm stating the obvious here. Did you get an ATA driver disk with the motherboard? If so, you'll need to press F6 when win2k setup says "Press F6 to install 3rd party SCSI drivers", insert the disk and install the drivers.

    Mozilla 0.8

Okay, I'm not gonna argue this one with you. Go to: http://www.webstandards.org Read, absorb etc. On second thoughts I will argue it anyway. Web standards may not mean a damn thing to you, but to web developers (and I'm not talking about the kiddies who write web pages in FrontPage Express here), it matters. If everyone would stop using delapidated old browsers such as Netscape 4 and start using something decent, the web would be a much better place. We'd be able to use some of the cool features of HTML without having to worry about whether it will look totally screwed up on Netscape, or whether the font size will be completely wrong on IE (which incidentally varies entirely between different versions and between the PC and Mac versions). We wouldn't have to include browser checks in every page which naturally slow down the web pages a bit. We wouldn't have to spend 90% of our time correcting all these problems with different browsers, so we'd have more time to do better things (we do have better thigns to do). As a plus bonus, we wouldn't have to charge people so much for writing web sites. Less time = less money. I'm not saying Opera 5 is bad, it's not. It's vastly better than Netscape 4. It's not made by Microsoft. All things in its favour. Sadly though it doesn't look like there's gonna be an Opera 6 (so I've heard), so it's kind of a dead end browser now Damn shame. Also, Opera has ad banners in it. To get rid of them you must pay (or crack). Mozilla does not. It is 100% free. When all the bugs are ironed out, it should be seriously kick *** . I can perfectly understand you sticking with Opera for now, but when Mozilla 1.0 is finally released and assuming it is up to scratch, I hope you'll start using that instead. Regards Xiven

IE 6 Beta Available for download

Taking down the bug report page has got to be one of the strangest not to mention dumbest things I've ever seen Microsoft do. Well except for Media Player 7 perhaps. :-)

Whats yours expirience with IBM hard drives?

Well 2 friends of mine have had 2 46 Gig IBM drives fail on them each. 4 drive failures in such a short space of time cannot be normal. Haven't had any problems with my 30Gig IBM yet fortunately

    Mozilla 0.8

Maybe so, but Opera 5 doesn't support CSS-2 nor does it support 70% of the Document Object Model (DOM2). Netscape 6/Mozilla does (so does IE).

    IRQ

Unless it's causing you problems - leave it alone. It's like that cause win2k by default uses ACPI. With ACPI, as well as getting better power management features (such as being able to shutdown your machine by pressing the power button), you shouldn't have to worry about IRQs ever again. In theory. People have been experiencing problems with ACPI (especially with older hardware), so if you are actually having probs with it, search these boards for how to disable ACPI. -- Xiven
