SHS - yeah I know. I'm not moaning, I'm just warning others of the fact that it may happen to them. As for reporting the bug; I would if their beta site were online, but it's not so I can't.

Hmmmm... well I just did a repair of win2k and it's all happy now Think I'll stick to IE 5 for now.
-
Well I'm on Win2k and I upgraded from IE5.5 SP1 to the public beta of IE6. For now I'm putting up with shift-clicking on links to open in a new window. Dunno if a newer release is gonna fix my problem or not. May still have to reinstall windows (only did it 2 weeks ago grrrrrrrr).
-
I really wouldn't install it if I were you. I did. Basically, the uninstall won't work, which would be okay if it weren't for the fact that the right mouse button menus no longer work since installing IE6. (ie. I can no longer right-click on a link and select "Open in new window" etc...) Probably why they pulled the damn thing. Other than waiting for them to release a newer, fixed version, my only other course of action is to reinstall windows (again). ------------------ Xiven Code: ABit KT7-RAIDD750 @ 850MHz256MB PC100 RAMCreative Labs 3D Blaster GeForce2 MX (Det 10.8.0)Creative Labs SBLive! Tried using IP addresses. Worked perfectly! Strange that that should work though... Hmmm.... couldn't find that ntrights thing you were talking about, tried installing every little thing hidden on the 2k server cd - still no joy.

Nice. I'll have to remember that one :-)

Oh dear, I did warn you AFAIK There's no easy way around it other than to use an emergency repair disk. Hope someone else has a better suggestion.

Got exact same problem but with different printer (HPDJ690C). Still haven't found the answer. Someone suggested using the IP address of the machine rather than the UNC name. Don't know if this'll help. -- Xiven

Go to Programs -> Administrative Tools -> Local Security Policy (if you can't see administrative tools, go to Settings -> Taskbar & Start Menu and enable it). GO to Local Policies -> User Rights Assignment and either add users to "Deny logon locally" or remove them from "Log on locally". Be careful not to remove your own account though (VERY VERY IMPORTANT!!) -- Xiven [This message has been edited by Xiven (edited 13 March 2001).]

Alternative to CrazyKillerMan's suggestion of adding guest accounts with your login names is to just enable the standard guest account in Computer Management -> Local Users & Groups (it has a red cross on it by default). Win98/ME will see the guest account and use it automatically. If the user accounts are not the problem, however, you may like to check the following: Make sure all machines have at least the TCP/IP protocol installed for the network cards. Make sure all your machines are on the same subnet (eg. IP address of 192.168.0.x) and that your subnet mask is set to 255.255.255.0 on all machines (is faster if all on the same subnet). Make sure file and print sharing is turned on (yeah I know, obvious, and it should be on by default in win2k but check it anyway). Make sure all your machines are in the same workgroup. With regards to internet connection sharing, go to the properties of your internet connection, tick the "enable internet connection sharing for this connection" box. Set all the other machines on your LAN to have their Gateway and DNS set to the IP address of your w2k machine. Hope this helps. -- Xiven

I'm just confused as to why they've released IE5.1 SP2 months after releasing IE5.5....

Of course with Starcraft you could just download your own personal server from http://www.FSGS.com that lets you play over tcp/ip like on battle.net. Should run a little faster playing than through a VPN tunnel. :-)

I'm also having loads of problems with network printers under win2k. Both machines running win2kpro. HP Deskjet 690C on one machine. Try to print via other machine and it does nothing. ------------------ Code: ABit KT7-RAIDD750 @ 983MHz256MB PC100 RAMCreative Labs 3D Blaster GeForce2 MXCreative Labs SBLive! If you're really desparate, then you might want to try tunnelling through the firewall via the http protocol. Go visit http://www.htthost.com/ and come back much wiser and happier :-) -- Xiven

I would really recommend that you go to http://www.mozilla.org and download Mozilla 0.7 It's a pretty damned reliable version and it's Netscape 6 without the baggage. If Opera supported the Document Object Model properly then it would seriously kick butt and I would probably switch from IE too. Maybe in the next version.... -- Xiven [This message has been edited by Xiven (edited 12 February 2001).]

Thanks for that! Fantastic! It's amazing how the little things make me happy -- Xiven

I assume you have tried raising the voltage and improving the cooling.

I hate (love) to point this out, but FSAA on a Voodoo 5 5500 is SLOW in extremis. In fact even without FSAA, the card is still slow compared to a GeForce2. But, since you're asking if your rig is powerful enough, I'd have to say probably yes and I'd be very interested to see what kind of 3dMark score you get with it.

I don't know about any program that comes with win2k that lets you do this but you can download a small proggie from http://www.bath.ac.uk/~ma8tsp/shutdown.exe that should do the trick nicely.

In case anyone cares: Our University machines have their hard drives split into two - one with an image of windows archived on (completely unreadable by the OS) and one with windows on for real. Each time the machine is restarted, it boots from the network, which then runs a program that extracts the image from the archive drive to the main drive completely wiping whatever was there. It then boots windows from the newly cleaned hard drive. This whole process takes about 3 minutes which is why we encourage people to log off rather than shut down.
-
I'd have to say that it's probably a lot quicker just to edit your boot.ini though and really not very tricky.

Okay, once you've got your SMTP server up and running (following the instructions in this thread), open up the Default SMTP Virtual Server properties page, go to Access -> Relay... and check that your computer is allowed to relay through the virtual server (you can just select the "All except the list below" option if you want an easy life). Lastly, go into your e-mail program and edit the e-mail account details. Change the SMTP server from "smtp.xxxx.com" or whatever it is to "localhost". And there you go; you can now send e-mails as normal without having to use your ISPs SMTP server. a) ACPI is NOT the problem with regards to SBLive screw ups. The sharing of IRQs under ACPI is intentional and should never cause any problems unless you are using some EXTREMELY old and obscure bit of hardware in one of your PCI slots (read some of the technical documents on it if you disagree - you'll find loads on the subject in the Microsoft Knowledge Base). It doesn't matter whether or not ACPI is enabled, if the sblive doesn't like your system, it doesn't like it. MP3s skipping: I'm just wondering whether the people who have reported their MP3s skipping are using the waveOut or DirectSound output plug-in (Winamp users only). Cos on my machine, DirectSound skips quite badly, but waveOut is just fine. -- Xiven
