Quote: Unbind File and Print Sharing from your Internet adaptor, that'll fix it. No, I'm afraid not. I know, because I have received one such message (before I turned off the service), and File and Print sharing has always been unbound on my modem connection (as it is by default, at least in XP). If you don't believe me, try it. Quote: Even better, install a firewall and make absolutely sure that ports 137-139 are blocked. Yes, blocking the ports should work fine.

Only real solution that I know of is to disable the Messenger service.

As best as I understand it, normally you'd need to go to the user control panel in XP and in "Change the way users log on and off" untick the "Use the welcome screen" option. To force this option you can run (Start -> Run) "gpedit.msc", browse to Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Logon and set "Always use classic logon" to Enabled. I was pretty sure though, that when connected to a domain, XP would only show the NT-style login box so I don't know why your XP machines are not doing that.

Quote: Quote: Use Phoenix as your browser. It blocks pop-ups http://www.mozilla.org/projects/phoenix/ Phoenix == Mozilla == craptacular Well that's your opinion and you're entitled to it, but personally, I say that Mozilla 1.1 is the best browser I've ever used. With features like pop-up blocking, tabbed browsing (yes I know it's stolen from Opera), full Cascading Style Sheets (buggy in IE and current Opera 7 Beta) and Document Object Model (non-existent in Opera 6) support, plus the infinitely useful DOM Inspector, and the fact that it doesn't crash repeatedly (unlike previous Mozilla versions ), makes it a clear winner. Note: this is just my opinion. Feel free to ignore it. Anyway isn't this thread about pop-up blockers for IE?

Compatibility issues on Windows 2000 with Office XP Pro
Xiven replied to Sakirik's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Yes it'll work just fine. -
mshearts.exe from windows xp doesn't have LAN support though.
-
If you want it to work in hardware mode, then you can try it with the Riva patch applied, but with the Riva checkbox in ff7config not ticked. Try getting it to work in software mode like Admiral LSD said first though. You may well need to try different nvidia drivers.

Quote: The Messenger service (not to be confused with Windows Messenger) is nothing new, it's been around in versions of Windows NT since about v4 (maybe older). It's intended as a means of sending administrative alerts to other users on a LAN. Unfortunately since it makes no distinction between LAN and Internet, anyone can send a message to anyone who has the Messenger service enabled. Messenger has been used for evil purposes in the past. Several years ago at an I-LAN which was held not long after Windows 2000 was released much havoc was wreaked by certain people who found it fun to message the entire workgroup (which can cause some games to effectively alt-tab out, much to the frustration of the person who was about to get that last frag to win the match). It was also used more recently to scare people into thinking that Microsoft were tracking their use of illegal software. Since until recently NT has remained the domain of big companies and the more technically-minded users, no-one has really bothered to try using it for spam until now. Now XP is on the scene and has become widespread, it's a different story. Since there are so many WinXP users who have no idea what the Messenger service is let alone how to disable it, I can see this becoming a much more widespread problem. The solution of course (under Win2k and WinXP) is to go into "Computer Management" (easiest way is to right-click "My Computer" and click "Manage"), go to "Services and Applications", then to "Services", scroll down to "Messenger" and double-click it. Change the "Startup type" to Manual and click the "Stop" button. Click Ok, and it's disabled. I'm sure you can figure out how to re-enable it for yourselves should you want to. Doh, didn't notice that. Some fool resurrected a 2 year-old thread

Most sticky key problems were fixed by DirectX 8 and by Service Pack 2.....

Well it looks like the site is designed to do that, if you look at the following line of javascript from the page: Code: NFW = window.open("",TargetWindowName,"fullscreen,"+s); Note the "fullscreen" parameter. And no, I can't explain why it only did it after upgrading to IE6 SP1

Disabling the guest account should prevent them from even listing your shares.

Quote: Slow web sites can be annoying, however I apreciate that there are probably reasons why a site is being slow: 1. The site is popular, the server is swamped which means the information there is good, I'll happily wait for good information. 2. The site is being run at a loss, ie it's a fan site or just a person with a regular job who looks after it, he/she cannot afford to buy a dedicated server an a really fast connection. I respect that just wait for things to load. 3. Networking problems beyond the hosts control, a routing table wrong on your own ISP can cause a site to load slow whereas the rest of the world has no problems. 4. The webmaster has used tables to create the page layout, meaning that the page has to load in its entirety before the browser can render it.

Ok, call me stupid, but I can't figure out for the life of me why anyone would want to play over IPX when UDP/IP is available and runs just as well. I removed IPX from my PC as soon as Blizzard released the UDP patch.
-
Give up with Starcraft over IPX (it's quite buggy especially in Win2k/XP). Download the latest SC patch from http://www.blizzard.com/ and marvel at the wonderous new option to play over UDP/IP.
-
Are you running the 1.02 version of the game? (the nvidia patch - but also includes some 1.01 fixes) If not, try it (you'll need to apply chocobo patch etc. again after).
-
Well you could always try replacing the ff7.exe and see.
-
If it's your first time into the observatory, then yes you should get a video clip.
-
Question: do any of the other video clips work (eg. the intro ones)?

Try this: http://www.bosrup.com/web/overlib/

ACT 2.6 has been out for a while now. It installs on XP and 2k (with Service Pack 3). Some people have had problems installing it, but it's working fine for most people. ACT 1.5 will still work also, if you can find a copy.
-
Like I said. Install Mozilla.
-
That's strange. I happen to know that you're not the only one who's had that problem, but it worked fine for me.....
-
I recommend that you try upgrading to Service Pack 3 and then installing the Application Compatibility Toolkit 2.6 instead (which is much nicer anyway with the Compat Admin tool).
-
Let me guess, this happened after installing SP3? If so, you're not the only one.
