I know there was a way to change the default folder icon used in explorer, but I can't seem to change it in Windows 2K. I have used a couple of shareware apps that are supposed to change the icon, but to no avail. The same ugly yellow folder is still there. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. yeah, I have tried that program, but to no Avail! But I think I might know why. I am running an alternate shell and not the windows 2000 default shell. That might be what is causing the problem. I am running the shell Darkstep.

Damien, I purchased my case with a 400 watt power supply. It was an option from the local place where I purchased my case. I haven't looked for them online, but I am sure that they would be somewhat easy to find. I will take a look around and let you know what I find out. ------------------ System Specs: Asus P2B-D Dual PIII 700MHz 512MB PC100 RAM Elsa GeForce2 GTS 64MB Video Card Promise Ultra66 Controller WD 15.3 GB HDD ATA66 7200 RPM WD 20.5GB HDD ATA66 7200 RPM Asus 50x CD-ROM Sony 4x4x24 CD-RW SB Live! I am using the 750A with a 400 Watt power supply and I LOVE IT!! Plenty of room for fans. Includes a large fan which blows directly on my processors. Very, very nice case. I highly recommend it. Only one problem though. This case is HUGE! Very tall case, other than that this thing is great, with plenty of room for all of your goodies and proper ventilation! ; ) ------------------ System Specs: Asus P2B-D Dual PIII 700MHz 512MB PC100 RAM Elsa GeForce2 GTS 64MB Video Card Promise Ultra66 Controller WD 15.3 GB HDD ATA66 7200 RPM WD 20.5GB HDD ATA66 7200 RPM Asus 50x CD-ROM Sony 4x4x24 CD-RW SB Live! Possible to backup registry in Win2K, ahead of testing dubio
Donald2B replied to sk's topic in Software
Actually that doesn't work for me. When I get a corrupted file, it is almost always the Software file. Even then, when I do try to import my old registry file I get all kinds of errors telling me that some keys are currently in use and they cannont be altered. Unfortunately this method doesn't work for me. Hopefully I can find a method that does work so I don't have to reinstall Win2K everytime the Software file gets corrupted. Maybe that is just me though. ------------------ System Specs: Asus P2B-D Dual PIII 700MHz 512MB PC100 RAM Elsa GeForce2 GTS 64MB Video Card Promise Ultra66 Controller WD 15.3 GB HDD ATA66 7200 RPM WD 20.5GB HDD ATA66 7200 RPM Asus 50x CD-ROM Sony 4x4x24 CD-RW SB Live! I am running a dual boot setup with Win2K Pro/Win98SE. I am getting a BSOD in Win2K that is really starting to be frustrating and would like some insight as to what this problem might be. Here is the Message: STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The Registry Cannot Load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\Software or its log or alternate. IT is corrupt, absent, or not writable. Do not pass Go! Do not collect $200! This is the second time that this has happened. Machine runs perfectly, then I get this BSOD. I didn't know how to fix this last time so I reformatted the partition and then started over from scratch. I have been running great for about two weeks and then last night I got this BSOD again. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated! Etexter, That was some good information. Only problem is that they dealt with the System file and not the software file. I can't find a backup of this file and I think that this is the file that is causing the problem. I am searching my harddrive right now to see if there is another backup copy of this file somewhere. Would the two different OSs cause this problem even though they are on completely different hard drives? I have been running multiple OSs for a while now with no problems, except for this one. I just assumed that it was a Win2K problem. Maybe not. ------------------ System Specs: Asus P2B-D Dual PIII 700MHz 512MB PC100 RAM Elsa GeForce2 GTS 64MB Video Card Promise Ultra66 Controller WD 15.3 GB HDD ATA66 7200 RPM WD 20.5GB HDD ATA66 7200 RPM Asus 50x CD-ROM Sony 4x4x24 CD-RW SB Live! I work with a lot of 3D Animation packages...namely 3D Studio Max and MAYA, so every little bit of extra RAM helps!! Nothing is worse than working in a scene and your harddrive sounds like it is grinding coffee because all of your Physical RAM is gone and its hitting the harddrive for all it is worth. I personally think that for what I am doing that 512MB of Ram is not enough. I am going out to get another 512MB of Ram this weekend to really get this thing cranking!! ; ) ------------------ System Specs: Asus P2B-D Dual PIII 700MHz 512MB PC100 RAM Elsa GeForce2 GTS 64MB Video Card Promise Ultra66 Controller WD 15.3 GB HDD WD 20.5GB HDD Asus 50x CD-ROM Sony 4x4x24 CD-RW SB Live! I recently started checking out this site and I have found it to be very informative. http://2cpu.com Go into the forums section and all of the motherboards you listed are discussed there with people who are actually using them. I just recently purchased my Asus P2B-D motherboard and I was looking at all of the other boards, but seeing how many problems people were having with them I opted to go for the Old 440BX chipset. I loved this board so much that I got one for my work machine!! ------------------ System Specs: Asus P2B-D Dual PIII 700MHz 512MB PC100 RAM Elsa GeForce2 GTS 64MB Video Card Promise Ultra66 Controller WD 15.3 GB HDD WD 20.5GB HDD Asus 50x CD-ROM Sony 4x4x24 CD-RW SB Live! I am using Darkstep v. .971 in windows 2000 and I am having no problems! I am even using some litestep modules with darkstep. Very stable and no problems here. The best thing is that it uses less resources than the Windows Explorer default shell. My 2 cents worth. ; ) ------------------ System Specs: Asus P2B-D Dual PIII 700MHz 512MB PC100 RAM Elsa GeForce2 GTS 64MB Video Card Promise Ultra66 Controller WD 15.3 GB HDD WD 20.5GB HDD Asus 50x CD-ROM Sony 4x4x24 CD-RW SB Live! I am not the most knowledgable when it comes to all of the different dual mobos, but I can tell you that I am running an Asus P2B-D motherboard and this this is rock solid!! I haven't had any problems with Win2K, Win98, or Whistler! Everything works like a charm. There is only one major drawback and that would be that there are only 4 PCI slots. So from what you listed I don't think that will be a problem, but then again I am not sure about a couple of your items. This board is based on the solid 440BX chipset and it is overclockable. I was able to get the motherboard to run at 133Mhz FSB with all of my components working like a charm and everything running stable for over a month without a reboot!! ; ) Another notable feature is that the AGP is 2x max. Which when you think about it is not that big of a difference. Anyway, my systems works flawlessly! ~Troy System Specs: Asus P2B-D Dual PIII 700MHz 512MB PC100 RAM Elsa GeForce2 GTS 64MB Video Card Promise Ultra66 Controller WD 15.3 GB 7200 RPM ATA66 HDD WD 20.5GB 7200 RPM ATA66 HDD Asus 50x CD-ROM Sony 4x4x24 CD-RW SB Live! I have an Asus P2B-D motherboard which is the latest release using the 1012B bios version. I am running Dual PIII 700Mhz coppermines and they are working flawlessly. I have been running 3D Studio Max on Win2k ever since beta 3 and have had little to no problems with Max except for crappy video drivers. First things first though....you said that you had Max installed under Win98. You need to reinstall it under Win2k to work properly. Second...What version of 3D Studio Max are you using? I need some more information about you system...ie. what video card are you using? driver version...etc.. Like I said, it is running incredibly fast for me and I have had no problems except for poor video drivers. If you still have more questions feel free to e-mail me or icq me. ------------------ System Specs: Asus P2B-D Dual PIII 700MHz 512MB PC100 RAM Elsa GeForce2 GTS 64MB Video Card Promise Ultra66 Controller WD 15.3 GB HDD WD 20.5GB HDD Asus 50x CD-ROM Sony 4x4x24 CD-RW SB Live! I must be in the minority when it comes to Quake III and SMP. I am running in SMP on my system with no problems what so ever. I am using the Detonator 5.32 drivers for my video card. I haven't had any problems with Photoshop, but I have had similar problems with some other miscellaneous programs. This usually occurs after I have installed a couple of programs without rebooting each time. Usually once I reboot, the problem goes away.

Are there any good sites that have information on tweaking system RAM? I too have a similar motherboard and problem. I ended up buying the Promise Ultra66 IDE Controller and it has worked flawlessly with both Win2k and Win98. I am working on building a nice dual processor workstation that I will be using to do a lot of 3D Animation and things of that sort. Here is a brief list of the items that I plan on putting into this machine. Any help with a motherboard would be greatly appreciated. Dual PIII 850 512 MB PC133 RAM 30.4 GB WD Hard Drive Elsa Gladiac GeForce 2 Video Card CL 12X DVD Rom Drive etc... Thanks All!!

Thanks for the great info Ronin, and everyone else for that matter!! That Asus board does look nice, but I am not to sure if I want to go with the FCPGA chip yet or not. I don't know if there is any major performance difference, but I think I am going to stick with the good ol' Slot 1. I wanted a motherboard that I can continue to grow into and I think that from the different boards that I have looked at, the Tyan Thunder 2400 and the SuperMicro PIIDME both look to be my two top contenders at this point in the game. Again thank you to all who have provided me with some of your knowledge!

From the feedback I have been getting I know that I want to go with the i840 chipset. I am looking at the SuperMicro PIIIDME motherboard. It supports 133MHz FSB, UDMA 66, and 4x AGP Pro. I think that this is the board I might go with. Anyone have any experience with this motherboard?
-
Ronin: I have been thinking about the i840 chipset motherboards but have been concerned about the type of memory they require. I have taken a look at the Tyan Thunder 2400 and the Super Micro PIIIDME, both of which use the i840 chipset. Are there any drawbacks from having this chipset or would I be better off sticking with the old faithful 440BX chipset? As far as computer animation is concerned, I work with 3D Studio Max, SoftImage, and Maya. I have been currently working on some really high resolution renders with Max. Polycounts reaching the 2 Million mark, and I am really looking at building a very nice workstation that I will be able to use for a while. I don't do much in the way of video work, so would the SCSI drives be worth the extra cost? Again, Thank you for all of the information...it is greatly appreciated!!
