Ok, let me get this straight, you can flame the hell out of me, and that's just fine and dandy, but I finally get sick of you and flame you and you go whining like this? Am I really supposed to feel bad for you? I don't give a flip about your signature, I'm just sick of seeing you flame people everytime they disagree, then whining like this whenever someone gives you a taste of your own medicine!

Good lord, how old is Jdulmage? By the responses he gives on this board you'd think about 14. My post was aimed at the way you flame everyone that says anything you don't agree with. Just so you know, I am not against progress. I abandoned 3.11 years ago, and have kept up with every new release since. I'm currently running 2000 and will likely upgrade to Whistler when it's finished. Nowhere did I say anything about not liking progress. I said I don't like the method you use to deal with people on this board. And about your smart-ass little comment about 23 posts, I seem to remember when a post showed up that said "I don't mean to piss you off....." I've been reading this board a hell of a lot longer than my number of posts would indicate, but see I don't send useless flames and drivel just for the sake of pushing my number of posts up. I think you should leave. I can't say that I remember any time when you gave a civil answer to a question without making some smart ass "I'm better than you" comment. Ok, you're running Whistler in alpha, congratulations, I'm proud of you. Does that mean you're better than I am? No, I don't think so. I also never said that your signature offends me. That was a statement made by you. I can swallow up being flamed and not get mad. The entire point of my post was NOT about your signature. You can say whatever you want to there, I don't really care. It's about the fact that none of your posts serve to further any DISCUSSION. I'm sorry, but it does not help anything when you say things like "This post is becoming useless very fast" or "I pretty much spit on Windows 2000 right now as far as comparing the two. Loser..." At least when you flame this post, try to actually comprehend what I'm saying before you sound like an idiot.

Ok, I'm now wondering how much money someone is slipping Jdulmage to talk the way he does. It's really ridiculous, and it doesn't do anything to further discussion. Ok, so you like whistler, I'm happy for you, but good lord, spare us a little will you? It's really big of you to flame the crap out of everyone that posts anything besides "I love whistler, microsoft is god." I should honestly hope that it's better that Win2k. If it weren't, what would be the point in upgrading? Therefore, spare us all please and quit flaming everyone who says something against it! It's not going to be perfect, ok, get used to it!

Overclocking a PIII 500 Katmai--curious as to predicted resu
Gerbache Kaznet replied to INFERNO2000's topic in Hardware
My P3-500 is currently overclocked to 550. I can run 575 as well, but anything above that refuses to boot. The catch is that I'm running a BX chipset, so I'm not too sure if that limit is due to the chip itself or the rest of my system refusing to run that fast. Good luck to ya! -
All my PCI and AGP cards share the same IRQ!
Gerbache Kaznet replied to Winger300's topic in Hardware
Well..... There is a way to get ACPI turned on without reinstalling, but there is a pretty decent chance that you'll kill the install. You go into device manager and change the drivers for standard PC to ACPI PC. If this works, you'll reinstall all your drivers and all will be happy with the computing world. If it doesn't work (like mine, I might add) your system will not boot, and you'll have to totally reinstall Windows from scratch. Personally, I'd say just reinstall it if you only recently installed it anyway. If you really want to chance having it screw up, go for it, but it's more of a hassle than it's worth IMHO. -
I'm afraid that I'll agree that I don't see the point in going above the refresh rate of the monitor. The monitor isn't even displaying those extra frames, so why should you worry about it? Besides that, I daresay that none of you could show me the difference between 60fps and 100fps. The human eye just can't detect movement that fast! I'm just gonna stroll along at my 45-60fps in Q3

My monitor blinks the LED when there is no signal coming from the computer or it is in a power saving mode. Does the monitor have dual inputs? As in BNC and D-Sub connectors? If that's the cast, you might try making sure that it's set for the connector you use. I'd also thoroughly check the computer to make sure it's not the culprit. Best of luck!

Didn't the original version of 3DMark 2000 have a bug that prevented it from running properly in Win2k? I'd try getting the newest version and trying it again, because I believe the original was artificially lowering scores. Personally, I haven't run 3DMark on both my win98 and 2k, so I can't tell you the performance difference, but Quake 3 runs quite a bit faster on 2k than on 98. Hope that helps!
-
Are you using the system to mostly play games? All games based on the Unreal engine are bottlenecked by the processor, so you're biggest performance gains come from there. Quake engines are typically bottlenecked by both, but the graphics card makes a bigger difference at high resolutions. For general computing, the processor is definitely the way to go, because everything will run faster. Hope that helps at least a little.

I still wouldn't do that. When I changed those drivers, my system bluescreened on boot, so I had to wipe windows and do a clean install. In my experience, ACPI works like a charm, and somehow I doubt its the cause of the cd burner not working at a high speed.

Warning!!!!! Asus Geforce ddr 6800 driver
Gerbache Kaznet replied to MR whistler's topic in Hardware
Are you saying the nVidia driver is broken or the Asus driver? I've used both without any trouble. Which new nVidia driver are you referring to? Currently, I'm running the 5.30 reference drivers, and they seem a whole lot faster than the 3.x line of drivers that Asus insists on putting out. It's about time they got their act together and released one of the 5.22 based drivers..... At any rate, I haven't seen a blank screen problem yet, so it sounds like you have a conflict/screw up somewhere in there. -
The trouble with Via is that they often have major compatibility issues, and they tend to be slower that Intel boards. I believe Tom's Hardware did a big story on 133 mhz motherboards where the via sets came in near the bottom (the BX came in first even though it was overclocked). Once Via can iron out their compatibility, they could be a very viable option, but until then, I'll stick with Intel.

Umm, the Pentium 4 was formerly called Willamette, which is based on the IA-32 architecture, just like all the other x86 chips. We won't kick it up to 64 bits until the Itanium(Merced) comes out a little later, and even then it will be primarily for large servers with loads of cash. I don't believe the Pentium 4 will fit into a BX motherboard regardless, so if you're thinking that way, I'd just wait a few months. Personally, I like the BX set and wish Intel would go back to others like it. I'd look for a BX solution right now and run a P3-800 if I had money for an upgrade. Somehow I don't think the graphics card has anything to do with this one....I'm running a GeForce with the nVidia reference drivers and I don't have that problem. My guess is that it's Netscape actually. I know I've had trouble with Netscape crashing a lot. I would try to narrow that problem down by using a different browser for a week or so, like IE or Opera. If the memory dumps stop, you can probably assume that it's related to Netscape.

The drivers included on the win2k disk don't work? Mine seems to be ok (I can't say I've been using my printer much, though). Would I be better off to find the NT drivers from Epson or just using the drivers that come with win2k? Sometimes I think companies are determined to make sure people will never buy another of their products again......

LiveWare! Driver update for win2k.
Gerbache Kaznet replied to Gambler FEX online's topic in Hardware
Well, apparently the new LiveWare drivers are better than their predecessor. I got no distortion in Baldur's Gate, Unreal Tournament, or Quake 3. Baldur's Gate and UT were even running EAX sound quite nicely, except that I'm not too sure I like the eax support in UT too much. Everything kinda sounds like it's underwater (that's the best way I can think of to describe it.) Anyway, I'm mostly pleased so far. -
LiveWare! Driver update for win2k.
Gerbache Kaznet replied to Gambler FEX online's topic in Hardware
Well, as for the crackling sound, I had that problem severely when I first installed win2k. The only thing that fixed it in my system was to move the sound card to a different PCI slot. I since updated my BIOS and reinstalled win2k for ACPI, but I've been afraid of using the Liveware 2 drivers because of the IRQ sharing thing. As soon as I get back to my home system I'll check out the drivers and post back my experience. BTW, my system includes: P3 500 DFI P2XBL motherboard Asus V6800 Pure video card (GeForce DDR) SB Live! Value Maxtor HD UDMA Pioneer DVD with the nifty slot loading Lucent Winmodem (ugh! I want DSL) 128 meg. ram ACPI HAL running everything on IRQ 11 -
FSAA reduces the jagged stairstep appearance of diagonal lines in games. Personally, I've tried using it on my GeForce DDR, and I'd rather just run the game in high res without FSAA. Unreal Tournament in particular slowed to a crawl when I enable it. Of course, that may just be UT, because Quake 3 Arena runs just fine in 800x600 FSAA. Some people can see a "shimmering" effect when the diagonal lines move. *shrug* I believe Gamecenter had a nice article showing the difference between the FSAA on the Geforce and the Voodoo 5 btw. For the second question, all games based on a quake engine are OGL based, including Quake 3 Arena(obviously) and Half-Life. Unreal and Unreal Tournament are best on Glide(3DFX), but they also run on both D3D and OGL. You can tell by opening the preferences menu and looking at the display section. Hope that helps!

Liveware 3.0 for Windows2000: Where the hell is it?
Gerbache Kaznet replied to Mondain98's topic in Hardware
Well, I tried to go the route of complaining to the company, but Creative Labs largely blew me off on this one. When I complained that the Windows 2000 Liveware software and corresponding Live drivers were broken, they sent me back an email saying that the requested drivers could be found on their website. I went to the link they sent, and it simply said that Win2k drivers are currently available. They didn't even address the fact that I said the drivers they had posted were broken. In fact, thinking about it now, the response they gave me doesn't even look like they read the email I sent in the first place. Once again, Creative Labs screws up in the customer support arena! -
Well, if both of my OSes did everything I need, I wouldn't be dual booting them. The trouble with that philosophy is that they don't both do what I need. I vastly prefer win2k for the majority of my needs, but there are a few programs that simply do not run under win2k and will under win98. I don't see myself as wasting valuable time, and I only really reboot on occasion. Until someone (I could really care less who) releases an OS that will run everything I need flawlessly (haha) I'm going to continue to dual boot.

The SB Live and all the nVidia cards seem to be rather stingy with their IRQs, so you might try moving the Live to another PCI slot. About the ACPI, if I were you, I wouldn't just switch the driver. I've heard that it works for some people, but it totally killed my system, and I had to start over with a fresh install. Your best bet is to flash your BIOS with the latest release available, then reinstall Win2k. If you just install the ACPI drivers and it kills your system, be warned that even if you do a rescue and it works, you won't be in ACPI mode, but it will say you are. Very screwy, but that's what happened to my system. ACPI seems to have fixed all the problems I was having with conflicts between the GeForce and the Live, but then I also refuse to use the liveware 2k drivers until they release liveware 3! Best of luck!

I'm having a severe problem with Netscape Communicator version 4.7. When I use it and open any html page, the memory usage shoots way up into the 500+ megs range, using up all my virtual memory and then crashing out, sometimes taking everything with it. This just started today, but I'm not aware that I did anything besides check this forum. I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it, but that didn't seem to help any because it does the same thing now. I tried to check on Netscape's home page, but I gave up due to the fact that it seems to be totally unnavigable for any real tech support. If anyone has any clue what I could do to fix this, I'd appreciate it!

2 GeForce2 or not 2 GeForce2...that is the question?
Gerbache Kaznet replied to oldspice's topic in Hardware
I have a GeForce 256 DDR card, and so far I haven't had any troubles running any of my games. About the driver releases...once again I don't seem to have any problems, and I've been running each new reference driver since 5.14 as it was released. My only real gripe is that Unreal Tournament has pretty lousy Direct3D support and even worse OpenGL. On the plus side, I get 60fps in Quake 3 Arena running 1024x768 with everything on I can only imagine what the GeForce 2 GTS must be capable of running. Now if only I could find a better way to run UT so I could break that pesky 40fps barrier....... -
Diamond Viper 770 Ultra under Win2K using Detonator 2 driver
Gerbache Kaznet replied to Burner27's topic in Hardware
I wouldn't try to just go in and change the drivers from standard to ACPI. I tried that a few days ago and wreaked all kinds of havoc with my computer, culminating in a fresh install. I was getting a blue screen error on bootup saying that it couldn't access my filesystem. Win2k has to load an entirely new driver tree in order for ACPI to function, so it doesn't like being changed like that. Although I've heard that -some- people have managed to get ACPI working like that, I'd just not take my chances and reinstall. -
Liveware 3.0 for Windows2000: Where the hell is it?
Gerbache Kaznet replied to Mondain98's topic in Hardware
My proof that Win2k is (should be) supported as a gaming OS is in the fact that one of the Microsoft "critical updates" was designed to fix problems with various software programs, and nearly every one of them happened to be games! If Microsoft really doesn't want anyone playing games on Win2k, I seriously doubt they would take the time to put out an update to fix them. Now, if only we could get the hardware manufacturers to realize this and update their drivers......Asus seems to be rather lax in timely releases of their video card drivers. When nearly every other major GeForce manufacturer has released drivers based on the 5.x line, Asus just now released a new driver based on 3.82! That sounds vaguely like the Creative Labs support so far.............
