    Really tough Network question

Interseting.. I agree that it is possibly a DNS error. When you got your DSL fact sheet, were all the DNS entries entered properly? Can you ping the url, to get their IP number, and try going to the IP thru your browser. If you cant connect then there must be some type of filtering goin on. If you connect, then it must be a DNS error. jeff

    Using @home's dhcp server.

Whats the point of using their DHCP server? Just so they can change your IP with the lease is up? Use the Static IP that they gave you, that way you have more stability in running server apps (which they dont lke you doing, I know from first hand). j

    Most Win2k Friendly Vid Card?

I hear ya about this one. As far as most friendly to win2k? Drivers are a huge incentive when choosing a new card. I personally like Nvidia cards. I used to be a big Diamond fan, but once S3 bought them out, I cant think of a product they make that I'd want to buy now. As far as the Viper II goes. I wouldnt even consider it. It was intersting to watch it come out and be priced with all the upper cards (Geforce at the time) and watch how fast the price plummeted. The 3dfx voodoo 5's sound nice, but pricey as hell. And when upgrading from a Banshee, just about anything will be a HUGE improvment for ya. As far as drivers, I really like Nvidia. Sure, there are a ton of drivers, and new ones come out all the time, but isnt that what we want? I dont have much experience with 3dfx outside of their voodoo 2 card (which I dug very much 2 years ago). Those new GeForce 2 MX cards look to be pretty appealing at 150 bux. Looks like its on par with the origional GeForce 256, but falls apart when it hits higher res.(1024 and up). If your pricerange is between 100-200, either get a Geforece 2 MX, or a Geforce 256 w/ DDR. if its above that, look at the GTS's or the Voodoo 5's. If your going for ultimate go for the GTS Ultra. From what I hear, peole with V5's seem to be a bit more stable. But to tell yo uthe truth, I run an Abit BF6 with a Geforce 256 (detonator 3 6.18) with a SB Live and my system is stable as hell. I never had problems like some people mention. Hope this helps.. Jeff

    Hardware Firewalls

The company I am working for is looking to secure our internet connection a bit more than it is currently. Right now, we have 1 dsl line coming in, and that goes to a proxy server (which offers some security options), but there are a few power users that we have that have static IP's (from our DSL account) so those people are not under the proxy, thus a bit more vulnerable. So, the company is thinking about hardware firewalls, to help protect everything that is coming in off the dsl line. After some research, I notice that Watchguard's Firebox II seems to be the only one that is listed in catalogs. Has anyone had expeirnece in the subject before? Im intersted in hearing any suggestions. Thanks for the help.. Jeff

    Hardware Firewalls

nagaul, thanks for the response. Im not totally sure about a linux box. Im not very Unix knowledgable. The budget isnt too small, they understand it can cost up to 10g for something kinda nice. To set up a linux box, what all are we talking about? Do I have to buy specific software, on top of the cost of the computer. Truth be it, the server room is quite clutterd with servers as of now. Anyway, on a scale, how much time will it take to set up a linux box for someone who has done very little with linux? If its easy as setting up a proxy server, than it should be no problem. But if its trickier than setting up an exchange email server, then it might be worth the extra money for the watchguard. thanks again for replying, j

    Network Question

Most likely it is a WORKGROUP vs. DOMAIN problem.. Are you connecting to a domain? If so, then you need to set up both OS's to look at the domain and not the workgroup. If you are on a workgroup, win2k tends to create a workgroup by the name you typed in for the computer name. In win2k, you will have to go to the network identification and change it from the computer's name workgroup to the workgroup name that everybody uses. If you are running a client/server type network, I would suggest using a making the server a PDC and having the clients log onto the server. It isnt very difficult to set up, and much smoother than workgroups. Jeff

    Win2k installation help please!

Hmm, monitor flickering totally normal for most things. If the screen turn black and shows a bunch of commas, then there is obviously a problem. My only guess would be that when it goes to the video card, and it attempts to refresh it, its getting hung up. Most of your stuff looks pretty dialed so I doubt its any of the cards tripping you up. How many times have you tried the installation? On my old P200, it would reboot sometimes during the installation, which I equate to bad memory configuration, which is kinda true. If you have problems trying the installation a few more times, and the results are different (not the same as you described) it may be a memory issue, sometimes those guys can be hard to track down.

    SP1

Does anyone know if they plan to put the SP1 in the Windows update site? I know its considered a 'recommended' download, but I would think they would let us know thru that. the Update site is much easier to look at instead of searching for something that isnt out yet. And as previous NT 4.0 service packs, sometimes they arent the easiest things to find. I remember getting SP 4 for 4.0 just by a friendly link, no web advertisment at all... anyway, if anyone has info.. Jeff

    Internet Filtering Software...

I was just wondering if any of you guys out there can recommend a internet filtering package for NT servers? Preferably designed for MS Proxy server, or is familiar with Backoffice 4.0 or 4.5. If any of you guys have something to say, Id apprecaite any information.. JEff
