Try waiting about 5 minutes also. I've seen this many times, as the master browser on the network updates its list. On a lan with less than 100 pc's it will be under 5 min. For larger lans, you could have to wait around 15 min. Are you using wins, or is this a peer to peer network?

And slightly elaborating, if you have an exchange server you can accomplish the items you mentioned ("Q/A or meeting forum") simply by using the collaboration features of the server. You can perform scheduling, customize public folders for various projects, internal FAQ, etc. Exchange server is extremely powerful, look into its features if you have it.

Wow, I remember playing that one on a 14.4 modem. RA always was fussy about network connections. Westwood Studios improved it with future revisions, but that does not help you out. It has been a while since I used ipx games on a lan, but check to see if you have the netware client installed. Sadly, many of the classics are becoming unusable due to new technology. It may be time to move on to a newer version.

Although I don't know if it makes a differance, are you in corporate/workgroup mode or are you using internet mail? I never saw nntp settings in outlook, but I really never looked. I personally use forte agent, and they have a free news browser. My only other suggestion would be to check out officeupdate and see if there is an addon.

Did you move the disks around when installing the second drive? I know that when one mirror failed for me, I could not simply remove the damaged disk and boot off of the other. I needed to go into fdisk and mark the working drive active. Perhaps it thinks the wrong drive is active. If the new disk has a lower SCSI id, perhaps this is something causeing a problem. If you are using ide drives, perhaps it is a master/slave thing. **** Please note that I'm not recommending changing anything with your partition table via fdisk or other utils! The origional disk will be set up correctly. I'm just saying the os may be trying to boot off the wrong drive. ****

I just tested this out to verify, the 169.254.x.x ip range is a special range which will be assigned to a dhcp client that is not able to obtain an ip lease from the server. Try looking at norton and see if it is blocking this.

I seem to remember a post once about free services to register your domain name. I used one, but they are converting to a full pay site and I will be loosing my personal domain soon. Can someone please let me know of some good and free domain registration sites. Thanks, RY

The code to get the IP is pretty simple, however here is another solution. Register for free a domain name for the server. I use dns2go which gave me a domain and then has a client that automatically points the domain to that server. There are similar services. If you really want to use VB, don't be elegant with it. to get the job done use the shell command to pipe ipconfig to a text file. In vbs it is shell.exec Then you need to mail it. I'm not sure how .net does mapi but if you have exchange, you can "pre create" a text file with the headers in it and if copied into the proper directory will cause it to be mailed. The directory is \exchsrvr\IMCdata\Pickup , and the format is: From: sender@ServerDomain.com To: recipient@YourMailDomain.com Subject: My ip insert message body (ipconfig data) here. Make sure there is a blank line between the subject and body or you will spend an hour like I did trying to figure out why it does not work.

batch job copy files from server, then... write to CD?
ryoko replied to HELLBRINGER's topic in Networking
Although I prefer easycd creater, I think directCD creates a drive letter for you to copy files to. After bringing over the files you could then just copy to that drive letter. You could cut out the middle man and go directly over the wire to the cd, but I never like doing that. -
You can log on locally if the password and user name on the workstation are the same as on the server. I had to do that at times to work around some software issues. There obviously are some major disadvantages to this method. -Ry

People couldn't connect to you? I like that in a firewall. Seriously though, it should allow the packets through but if it uses udp I can see why it wouldn't. ZA pro has more features that allow direct port opening. Most new games tell you what ports to open, making this easy.

Check the cable, and the position it is on the cable. I spoke with someone at WD about a similar issue, and they said that regardless of jumper settings, the drives want to have the master at one connector and the slave at the other. For some reason I think they said the master went on the middle and not the end, but I honestly can't remember. Wherever you have the drive now, try swapping it to the other and see if that works.

Does anyone know how to get rid of the input methos icon on the taksbar? I opened it up and selected properties, however the "show in taskbar" is grayed out. The icon is just taking up space, and when I need the other settings, I can go into the control panel. Thanks for any ideas, Ry

The reason the browser worked for a second, and not completely is that initially it runs on the ip address. Then it gets forwarded to www.cnet.com which requires dns. You just need to get a forwarder set up. I believe someone posted how to do this above. -Ry

Also try this out. http://www.ntcompatible.com/vb/showthread.php?threadid=17306 -Ry

Here is something to thing about, Ziff Davis (ZDNET) downgraded all their ME computers to 98SE.

That would work well bytemangler, however I think this is a security issue, where Natter does not want to grant user ability to change time. I can think of some people who might get into mischief with it. Still I never needed to lock down a system that much.

Ok, here is a clumsy solution. I'll look in my resource kit to see if it has a better utility to do this, but until then this may work. I'm also assuming you have relatively few clients, enough that you can go to each workstation and do this, or some type of software to push this out (SMS server). On the local machine, create a script (it can even be a script to call another script on a DC) then using the srvany application make it a service. As the service you can have it log on with a higher level of rights. Now I admit this is really a bad solution, and only use it if you either don't get a better one or if you need a quick implementation. I really thought you could override a user lockout of setting things like the time on the domain. Something that would force the time to be synced to a domain controller but not changable by the clients. Well, let me look into it. -Ry

Hey, thats a neat workaround Clutch. I will have to remember it. If you get that FAQ thing going, this would be a good item to put in it. -Ry

Uh-oh. Bill in consideration would ban home-built PC's.

Be proud you are an American and show it Brian, even the govt has free speech and opinions, hehe. Scarry thought. Some day we will be reading of this on a joke page. -
I'm trying to replace an older nic with an SMC II 10/100 pci. I looked on SMC's web site for a driver, and I tried adding it within windows. Neither place had the driver and the card was not autodetected. It is on the HCL though. Any thoughts? -RY
-
Ok, I just put in another smc card, and it worked out well. I guess the origional card is bad. I'm surprised that looking up SMC in the add new hardware wizzard did not show the driver though. Possibly another mfg's chip in those cards.

Hmm, I never thought about running IIS using a web based on another computer. How about mapping a drive to your pc from the computer running IIS? That is about the best I can think of. It certainly should be possible to do. Now you said he is running XP. Does XP come with the full IIS, or does it come with a stripped down version? Since it is a workstation, it may have a limitation that makes you use a local web. -RY

Do you mean the FAQ in the top icon? There isn't anything in there other than user and board maintenance items. It sounds like a good idea, but the existing one might get cluttered. I like the idea though. [edit] -- Sorry, looked on the main page and saw what you meant. For some reason the sidebar is comming up as black on my system so I can't read the titles. Probably from maintenance on the page.

Set up an account for him using the same login name and password he uses for logging into his XP box. Then when you set up the sharing you would give that account rights to the folder. -Ry
