Now What's The Better Choice, W2K SP3 or WXP SP1?
bobbinbrisco replied to CyberGenX's topic in Slack Space
i have some funky hardware, but apart from that i would be using linux . But back to the topic: i prefer win2k, not just for the stability but for the greater performance compared to winxp. also winxp cant run some of my games, i dont know why but it just doesn't (e.g. need for speed: porsche unleashed) -
I've tried using stardownloader and although it is fast and has a good interface, there is no way to stop it from automatically catching clicks. Ive tried turning off browser intergration, changing file types and closing the program numerous times but still pops up when i click a link. THis is annoying as all the links i click are not always files i'd like to download.

i'm using 4.6.0078 and whenever i log into WinXp, Messenger tries to sign in, and then tells me i have an incorrect password. what i need to do to is to cancel it from signing in, then sign in manually (i.e. typing in my password). this all started happening for no reason, how do u turn this feature off?

this is getting very annoying. i dont know if this is a virus or anything but whenever i try to type anything the words like "can can" appear any where the inputing of text is concerned (URLs, Word). i think it might be due to voice recognition software, i recently installed it in office xp, but turned it off (unticked it in Word XP > Tools) but words still appear out of nowhere- even if i unplugged the mic.

good idea!! i think it's working

i boot mandrake from the cd and everything goes well until the end of the installation when i want to use a floppy to boot to Mandrake instead of using LILO. the problem is that Mandrake can't detect my floppy: it tries to write data to the floppy drive but nothing happens.

Mandrake 6 can't detect my floppy drive

my floppy runs perfectly normal under win2k, which is on the same computer as the one i'm trying to install mandrake -
what you need to do is to create partition magic boot disks. boot from these disks and tell partition magic to run the partition that win xp is installed on. (the winxp partition might be hidden, unhide it if it is)

Getright has been corrupting my larger setup files. Recently it has corrupted the Java Development kit(30mb) and the neverwinter nights critical buid(30mb). As i'm currently using 56 k modem its been really frustrating.

thx for the link. However, I'm not looking for speed, im looking for a corrupt-free, reliable manager for my downloads. Most download managers which split the file up into different bits have a higher chance of corrupting the file.

ICS is a pain in the neck. I recommend you use Sygate Home/Office Network for sharing your internet on a network. http://soho.sygate.com/products/gate_ov.htm

what sort of MP3/CD player do u have? i have the mpzoo and i recommend you to use Nero. Nero warns you if your filenames are too long, but it's upto u to check if your mp3 files contain a bit rate of over 256kbs.

The best solution to sharing the internet on any network is to use Sygate Home/Office Network. Go here and download it http://soho.sygate.com/products/gate_ov.htm

I have Civ3 version 1.117f and WinXP Pro. My graphics card is a Diamond Viper Ultra (nvidia TNT2) and i have the latest drivers. Whenever i start up civ3 the graphics are all blurry and distorted. the only thing i can c is the intro and after that i cant see anything. the only way i could get out is to restart my computer and only then could i c my desktop again. i am also running a dual boot with winme on the same computer and civ3 works without any problems. does anyone have the same problem, which they have solved?

Quote: I believe that XP is the ideal OS at the moment. In comparsion to 2000, it has so many new features that 2000 dont have, ... Linux cannot be compared at all with Windows. Even in security matters, where most people believe that Linux is much more secure then the Windows Platform. In that part i will just say that the results of a servey linux came up with more security bugs than windows 2000. Microsoft provided us with security patches, what happend with most Linux users? did they had to wait for the next version? And from the other hand, Linux dont have a character of there own; they tend to "clone" the windows UI or the Mac UI. Firstly Win2k outperforms WinXP in every way (gaming, applications etc) and because of this it has a whole lot less undesirable features that ppl dont need. Linux on the otherhand has A LOT LESS security issues than Windows: the problem with Linux though, is that the user needs to know HOW to use Linux effectively. once they do, Linux is a VERY POWERFUL tool, otherwise Windows is already preconfigured to deal with most security issues. Lastly, Microsoft was the one to COPY the Mac's GUI. The MAC was the FIRST to use a Graphical User Interface, Microsoft was using a command line interface (DOS). so i think Windows copied Apple and Linux followed Windows.

Updating Norton Antivirus subscription on two PC's
bobbinbrisco replied to SnapperOne's topic in Software
Since you have bought a new virus subscription on one of ur PCs try this (on the computer with the recent virus definitions): goto X:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs where X: is where you installed Win2k copy the contents of \VirusDefs into X:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs of your other computer. This should update ur virus definitions on both PCs without downloading the definitions twice.
