Ok, this is probably gonna sound crazy. I have an old laptop with a busted 3.5" drive. All I have to work with is a parallel port and serial port. I need to find a way to connect it to my Win2k machine. I was able to connect it DOS to DOS with its built-in Interlink program, but Win2k doesn't seem to have it. Any suggestions on what could be used that would work on both platforms?

Is there a way you can set up Win2k to NOT use ACPI when you install?

Let's see if I can remember how I did it..... First, you need to install IIS and the SMTP service. It'll probably ask you to restart. Do so. After it's installed, go the Administrative Tools, and then Services, and make sure the SMTP service is started. Then go to Admin Tools and choose Internet Services Manager. Expand your machine, and you should now see Default SMTP Virtual Server. Make sure it isn't stopped. Then, go into your email program, and change your SMTP server to "localhost". Then, all sent mail will be directed through your server. If you have a firewall, I suggest you set it to allow inbound connections from only "localhost". Ta da.

I've been trying to decide on a replacement for my Banshee, but am coming up stuck on what card provides the best support in 2000. I need a card with TV-Out as well. I'm trying to decide between a GeForce, a GeForce 2 MX, a Viper II, and a V3 3500. Decisions, decisions, decisions.....

Oh yeah, screw ATI. Then I guess it's the Asus V6800 for me then.

Hello again. I'm using ICS with my home network, and ever since I enabled it, I've been getting dozens of these errors in the event log: Event Type: Error Event Source: ipnathlp Event Category: None Event ID: 32003 Date: 6/20/2000 Time: 11:24:39 PM User: N/A Computer: WIN2KSYS Description: The Network Address Translator (NAT) was unable to request an operation of the kernel-mode translation module. This may indicate misconfiguration, insufficient resources, or an internal error. The data is the error code. Data: (words) 0000: 1f 00 00 00 .... In spite of this error, ICS still functions. But I would like to know why this is clogging up the log. This has shown up on every installation of win2k I've done. Any ideas?

I went and installed SP1, and for a while, things were OK. Then I tried changing the speed with which I connect to my bro's computer via crossover cable. As soon as I clicked OK, icq suddenly died. I went to check my mail, but it couldn't reach the server. So I though maybe the cable went down. I later restarted, and now I could get an IP, but I couldn't get on the net, nor could I connect to my bro's pc. AtGuard used to show 10 or so connections or open ports, but now it always shows 0. I uninstalled and reinstalled the SP, and even tried using a System State restore (after installing sp1), but to no avail. After the SS restore, the ports showed up again (only once), then failed to work. I uninstalled and reinstalled TCP/IP with and without the service pack, to no avail. I got really desparate and went into safe mode, copying tcpip.sys and ipnat.sys off the win2k cd into the winnt\system32\drivers directory. Now I can get on the net, but AtGuard is still completely defunct. It shows that it's running, but it neither blocks nor logs any ads or cookies. The firewall still seems to work, though (but I never use it anyway). If anyone could provide some insight into this, I would be pretty happy. For the record, I've got a 3com Etherlink III ISA and a D-Link 530TX (3com for cable, D-Link for LAN).

Yes, it seems that the SP screwed up the firewalls and made them work against me. As per your instructions, I removed AtGuard, ZoneAlarm, and then TCP/IP, and reinstalled them in reverse order, and now everything SEEMS to be working ok. But now, ZoneAlarm won't count any data that is sent out via Napster, which is really weird. I sometimes send out over 2 gigs of data over a weekend. But thanks a lot for your help in solving this IP murder mystery.

I've got a Banshee, and am using the 3dfx beta drivers, but I haven't had any problems with D3D. OpenGL is where the heart attack is. WickedGL took care of it, though.

Yeah, I know about the little affair with AtGuard and Symantec. Bought AtGuard for $15, and Symantec sells it for, what, $60 now? Anyways, I thought I'd try to run ZoneAlarm, but IT fails to function as well. Its status lights will flicker, and it'll count the bytes, but it won't perform any function a or a firewall. The hell? Man, this wasn't covered in my NT class.

First of all, why'd you take it out? Is 98 using NetBEUI?
-
Well, I had a similar problem, in which SP1 made my IP break down, so here's what I did (since nothing else worked). I dug out my CD, opened a command window, went to the \i386 directory, and typed "expand tcpip.sy_ c:\winnt\system32\drivers\tcpip.sys." You may only be able to do this in safe mode, depending on if the driver is already loaded, and it's not protected. Reboot, and you MIGHT be able to access the net again. If anyone has a better solution, PLEASE let me know.

I recently switched to a Diamond Monster Fusion, and installed 3dfx's Beta drivers, for lack of ANY support whatsoever from Diamond/S3. Direct3D seems to work semi-ok, but OpenGL has been a headache trying to use. When I try to use GL with Half-Life, it locks up at one of three points. First, right after the "Loading..." sign; second, during the "Starting Network..." message; and third, right when the console is supposed to disappear when you enter the game. It did work ONCE, but it never worked any other time. I've tried four differend MiniGL drivers, and none of them seem to work right. I can run D3D mode, but it has that lagged input problem that even the gl_d3dflip command doesn't get rid of. Has anyone been able to get their Banshee to do OpenGl right on 2k? Maybe I need the right MiniGL, but 3dfx doesn't have them on their site anymore.
-
Well, I went back, and used the "latest" MiniGL I had laying around, and found I could only get it to work right if it's set to 1024x768. This still sucks, though, as it's just not quite fast enough to keep up with what's going on.

My guess is that your computer is set to automatically reboot when you get a Stop error. Sounds like Diablo 2 causes a Stop, and your computer restarts itself, instead of waiting for you to hit the reset button.
