    K6-2 500 or above

Well, I have a K6-2 400 that's worked fine for me. It's sitting idle now that I have three other toys to play with. It's got a Asus P5A and case to go with it (Inwin A500, i think)

Would you get a dual AMD system?

Only if the price is right. But I think I'll wait at least a few months for the technology to mature a bit.

    Mounting drives upside down?

I know that mounting a hard drive on its side tends to shorten its life, but what effect does it have on the drive if it's mounted upside down?

    Mounting drives upside down?

The reason I'm doing it is because of the way the connector on the drive is positioned. It's an IBM 4.5gig U2W drive. Trying to mount it normally requires me to twist the cable around into a big mess to connect with my cdrom drive. Mounting it upside down removes this problem. I've had it like this for a few days, and haven't noticed any performance problems.

Anyone try the 12.00 DET drivers?

I picked up the 12.00, and they worked like a charm. I used to have a lockup on the Dragothic test in 3dmark2001, but the 12s fixed it. Seems to run a little faster, and the FSAA controls are a little easier to get to.

    Service Packs

If I'm not mistaken, the Windows 2000 FAQ on ntcompatible has the steps for integrating the SP.
  7. I have a Leadtek GeForce2 MX on Win2k, and just recently, whenever I change the screen resolution, the screen is blue when it finishes (not a BSOD, but the screen is dark blue). I can still see the mouse pointer, but nothing else. The only way for me to fix it is to press Ctrl-Esc, up twice, enter, "cmd", enter, then alt-enter to make the command prompt fullscreen, then again to make it normal again. Sometimes that fixes it. I'm not overclocked in any way. I've tried all the available Detonator drivers, and the ones from Leadtek. All with the same results. The screen never turns blue when I go to a fullscreen win2k command prompt, and it sometimes is blue even when I switch back. I looked over my BIOS settings, but nothing seems unusual. New KT133A and 266 bus...

If the KT133A boards coming out support the 266MHz bus, does that require a special cpu that uses it, or would any Socket A do the job? Is the 200/266 deal a motherboard-only issue? I'm about to build a system with the KT133A, and I'm unsure if I need a special proc. or not.

    CPU:Thermal question

    If I can do math right still....(After calculus, I vowed to forget it). 40C * 1.8 + 32 = ~104F. Not bad.

    New KT133A and 266 bus...

It seems I was a little unclear. I am not an OC'er, and all I'm interested in knowing is if the cpu also has to support the 266 bus. But if I'm getting this, the new cpu needs to support it, correct?

    Win2k dumping NIC

Ya know, I'm starting to wonder if the entire 3com line of NICs is under some kind of curse in win2k. I've had three 3com ISA NICs, and two of them have already died for no real reason. They just stop working. Windows sees them fine, but the card doesn't know what to do.

How to find out make of NIC

I thought I heard once you can put the FCC ID onto their site, and they'll get you information about it.
  15. Btw, folks, I sold INFERNO2000 that machine The case for that thing's as strudy as an engine block, even if it is 10 years old. It was my understanding that if you install the dhcp service on an NT 4 Server machine, the machine can not use dhcp to get its own IP. So, if you have cable and 2 nics, you'd need to set your ip manually. Is this correct?

    DSL / Router questions....

I have cable right now, and I'm getting sick of it. I'm thinking of moving to dsl, but I'm a little confused on a few things. One package the dsl company offers allows you 4 IPs for your dsl modem. I was also thinking of getting a router so I wouldn't have to keep one machine on all the time. I may be moving soon, so I don't want to order dsl, then have downtime while they have to set it up at the new place (if that's even possible). The thing I'm worried about is, can routers like the ones that Linksys and D-Link put out work with multiple IPs? Or should I do something different?

    BNC/AUI?

The AUI (aka DIX, Digital, Intel, and Xerox) connector was the connector for what is called "thicknet". It's basically a shielded form of ethernet cable, and I have yet to see it used anywhere. I guess regular Cat5 is more economical. As for that switch in the back, it seems to have a special purpose. Some hubs "management" ports on them, which I belive would be used for monitoring really large networks. I never got the back port to work as a regular port for a host, so I'm guessing it's supposed to be that way.

    ISA Ethernet adapters dont work!

Well, I didn't really have any ISA networking problems back when I had my 3com Etherlink III, which worked for about six months until it died.

    win2k network stops responding

I actually had that same problem with my 3com Etherlink III. It ran just fine, until I started playing half-life. It'd work for a few minutes, then the connection would die, and I couldn't get any activity from the card until I disabled and reenabled the network. My advice would be to try a difference net card, and see if that solves the problem. As for my old 3com, I pitched it.

  21. I'm running Win2k Pro on my machine in my basement. My brother is running Win98 in his room. I'm using a 10Mbit hub between them. I'm trying to set up his machine to use my printer over the network, but whenever I try to set it up on his machine, I get a message saying that I have no permissions. If I go into Explorer, and look at our workgroup (from his machine), both his and mine show up, but when I click on mine, it wants a password for the IPC$ share. No password I put in works. I can't find the password for it anywhere. The local security policy says he (and his group) have access to the computer from the network. From my computer, I can access both his and my own via NetBIOS with no problems. I can't understand where this problem is showing up. The username he uses to log on to his machine (the MS Networking password) is the same as the username he has on this computer (same pass, too). Can anyone shed some light on this?

Home networking trouble between 2k and 98....

I actually tried that, but that didn't work for me either. The Guest account was the only real way I could get it to work. My computer's behind a firewall, so I don't really need to worry about anyone logging in to it.

Unable to start Tribes on Win2k.

I just picked up a copy of Tribes, and the ntcompatible list says it works. It installed ok, but when I try to launch it, it crashes back to the desktop with no explanation. I recently installed SP1. My Banshee works fine (if you call random little purple lines "fine"), and the Live! drivers are installed ok. Help With Win2k Machine Spontaneously Rebooting?

It's probably because your Win2k machine is set to reboot automatically. Otherwise, it'd sit there with a Stop error staring you in the face.

I might add that those asterisks were NOT voluntary on my part. Not being able to say *** sucks.
