Well, I can only comment on #3 there: I just got my 12x10x32x Teac CD-RW from UPS today, and have burned four CDs so far, and haven't heard a peep out of the thing. Nice and quiet. One of the best thingsa I've got in this machine, considering it cost me $157 [shipped], and is the second or third best CD-RW [according to StorageReview.com]. Well, back to cleaning out my hdd.... -bZj

In a completely unrelated story: I am running at 750MHz now! P!!! 500E, 128MB PNY PC100, 128MB Hyundai PC133, Soyo 7VCA, and the grand master of air-cooling... a happy little Golden Orb! OK, so it's not the best HSF in the world, but it's working damn well for me. Never above 105°F at full load. I'm slightly hestitant to leave this machine for my new AMD-based system. Let's just hope that the new VolcanoII can be as good as the GOrb. -bZj [This message has been edited by Down8 (edited 18 March 2001).]

EM has good suggestions. As for the RAM/KT7-RAID issue: The KT7 is not going to take your memory above 112MHz anyway, so your same memory will be fine. The KT7A does have support for 133MHz memory, so that may be a way to go if you want/need PC133. Although, I have a stick of PNY PC100 at 150MHz right now [along with some Hyundai PC133, both @ CL3], so I wouldn't worry about your current memory. -bZj

My favorite is PowerDVD [i have v2.55]. SoftDVD MAX wouldn't show the picture, just the sound, for some reason. WinDVD played OK, but wouldn't let me change the rating guide, so I couldn't watch my own DVDs [Fight Club]. So, my vote is for PowerDVD. -bZj

Do all ibm hard drives you buy have 3 year warranties ?
Down8 replied to imtim83's topic in Slack Space
Not sure about your question, but I know I saw the 45GB Deskstar at buy.com for about $150, with the three year warranty. -bZj -
Yeah, I'm running an *cough*irregal*cough* version of 2K now, but would obviously prefer to be legal. My ME is perfectly legal though. I will probably end up picking up an OEM copy of 2K when I buy the hdd or mobo for my new computer, 'bout the same price as an upgrade. -bZj

as I understand it [i'm sure I'll be corrected], the RPMs deal more with access times than anything else, so once your game is loaded, the RPMs don't matter as much. -bZj

I don't have any other CDs, except for a WinME full CD, do you think it might accept that? -bZj

I'm not sure if this would help you, but the Asix 200+ webcam has a built in webserver, so you can just plug it into a hub, and access it's pictures through a normal web-browser, hence it is universally compatible. Not sure if my friend has kept it up, but this is an example of it in action. [e]I forgot it is passworded... Try username: 'guest', no password.[/e] I've got to find one of these. -bZj [This message has been edited by Down8 (edited 10 March 2001).]

I don't know for a fact, but that doesn't sound right to me. -bZj

Just adding ym experiences... WinDVD didn't display the picture of any DVD, only played the sound. SoftDVD Max played OK, but wouldn't let me change the rating system, so I wasn't allowed to watch my own movies. PowerDVD 2.55 works fine on my system. -bZj

I'm not sure if this is exactly a hardware problem, or a software problem, but it tweaks me off just the same. I've been using a $10 Compaq branded Logitech MouseMan [4-buttons] for a long time now, and on occasion, it will continue to scroll, even after I release the middle button in I.E. I haven't noticed this in any other apps. Now, I had always attributed this to my mouse being rebranded by Compaq, and something getting fscked in the process. But, I purchased a MS IntelliMouse Explorer yesterday, and today, I'm getting the same 'scroll-until-it-feels-like-stopping' effect with this mouse. Anyone have any ideas what the hell is going on? This is the '"33% faster", 2000 samples/sec.' one, on the PS/2 port [uSB isn't working for some reason - will work on that later], with IntelliPoint 3.2 drivers from the included disk. Win2K Pro [had server on w/ same problems w/ Logitech], Soyo 7VCA. -bZj

OK, trying the Ctr-Alt-Del stuff now. For reference, my system includes: PIII 500E@700 [140FSB] on the 7VCA; 258MB RAM [128xPC100 & 128xPC133] StealthIII S540 [with latests drivers, damn S3]; using the onboard sound [Acoustic Edge is on the way]; IE 5.5, SP1; um.. what else would be relevant... Adaptec SCSI, Office 2K, tons of other apps. -bZj The entire specs can be found here. [This message has been edited by Down8 (edited 06 March 2001).]

Last I saw, they found Mulder dead in the woods. X-Files is supposedly ending next year. Duchovny said he wouldn't be opposed to doing movies after the show was over, but he no longer wanted to do the show. -bZj

Someone is giving this to you, or you will be buying it? If free, then, why not. I love collecting old hardware, just ot play wiht. I just picked up an old 68k Mac for $5 to play around with. It can sit next to my 486. -bZj

I would differenciate fine malt liquor from 'beer'. I enjoy a nice 40 of 8-ball as often as possible, but I don't consider it a 'beer'. When I'm forced to drink beer, I go for the simple Mexican brews of Corona or XX. I prefer [H]ard alcohol though - maybe fraternity life has ruined me. -bZj

I believe Guillemont makes one, and possibly Leadtek. Check www.pricewatch.com for them. -bZj

I usually go to P-A, or UF for my daily comedy, but jdulmage, you're keeping my laughing a lot recently. Thanks, -bZj

Reinstalled Win2K two days ago, so I'm still installing things. I have a version that is dated 6/8/2000, is this the newest version? If not, where may I get the newer one [MS' search function is useless]? Thanks, -bZj

Thanks. Getting it now. -bZj

I decided on the 850MHz Tbird, b/c that is where the current price jump is: between 8xx and 9xx, $100 and $120 respectively. There should be a price drop coming on the 6th, when they release the 1.3, or the 266MHz 1.2 [don't rmember which], so I'm waiting till them to buy. -bZj

Damn, I'm ordering the KT7A-RAID and a Tbrid 850 this weekend. I haveheard that the latest 4-in-1s are not that great [.28 or .29a or something], so try to get a slightly older version. Or, just throw in the CD that came with the board and install those, they should have Win2K drivers. -bZj

'Let's make this a hot topic' = a sad jackass' attempt to corrupt this board ala 3DFiles' "how do you insert images" tards and Sharky's "my CD-Rom is broken" style lackies. Don't post in that thread. -bZj

Something XP will have trouble winning over users with
Down8 replied to DarkAngel's topic in Hardware
Hey, sometimes it can't be avoided. Why spend another $40-150 on something you already own? I'm using a 33.6 ISA 3Com WinModem. No, not b/c I like it, but b/c I unexpectedly went from broadband [on my PCI Linksys] to living in the middle of nowhere, being forced to use dial-up. No money/desire to go buy a new modem just to avoid old technology. I always try to get at least one ISA slot on my motherboards, just in case. As long as mobo manufacturers keep building mobos with ISA slots [Abit KT7A/RAID], the standard will not be "dead". -bZj
