  1. Will that work? It doesn't sound right [if only b/c there is not usually a 'Windows' folder on an NT box]. I do want to know if there is an answer for this type of thing though, as I'm planning a reinstall, and would like to keep as many settings as possible. Is there anyway to export a profile - as if it was becoming a network profile - then import it again to a new machine? [Like ZIP it up then extract it under the new install?] -bZj

    Does Win2K Pro have IIS?

OK, I'm running Win2K Server/IIS 5.0 right now, so I can test parts of my site before uploading. I'm thinking of formatting/reinstalling Win2K Pro this weekend [fresh for spring semester ], but I want to keep IIS. I think I've heard reference to Pro having IIS as an option [with more limited capabilites], but wanted to make sure. Thanks for any info, -bZj

Anyone know of a good scsi DVD rom drive?

Can't offer a specific suggestion, but I can give you a lead: DVD InfoMatrix - www.inmatrix.com You might also check Yahoo!, as I've seen pages that listed region free DVD-Roms. -bZj

I won't participate in another NS/IE war, but suffice it to say that AOL did screw that company bad. I do want to say that I had no problems reading or writing to my NTFS partition in Linux. -bZj

    Which file IS the rigistry?

It would be nice to know, b/c I have forgotten, but for your purposes, couldn't you just export your entire registry with RegEdit.exe? -bZj

    Windows 2000 + MS Game Voice ?

Could it be that your processor/bandwidth are eating the space needed for GameVoice to run? -bZj

Windows Whistler to be Windows XP.

I was wondering why the hell one would think that 'XP' refers to 'cross platform'? Is this WinDistro gonna run on a Dreamcast? Or even a set-top box maybe? I haven't heard any reports even hinting at such. Link a brotha up! -bZj
  13. I disagree with some of the above. 1st: putting your swap file on only a separate partition is of no use [except for organizational purposes], unless it is on a different physical drive - one drive spinning with separate partitions is still just one drive spinning. 2nd: if you do put your program files on a separate drive, then putting them on the same IDE channel would only slow you down, as only one device can use the channel at a time. 3rd: if you give us more info about all drives you have [hdds and CD-ROMs], then you may get more suggestions about how to configure them. Out of personal curiosity, what does having a "Voodoo4 AGP" have to do with your swap file and harddrive configuration? -bZj

    Windows 2000 message boards

<ME>Agrees with Ronin.</ME> I only post questions here. I answer questions [with the knowledge gained here] at some other forums, but they are not Specifically Win2K related, just computers in general. -bZj
  15. OK, borke my CD-Rom a while back, decided to pick up a cheap DVD-Rom to replace it, got the Delta 12x at Circuit City today [cheapest place around here]. Hardware install is fine - master of the second IDE channel, all alone. Reading CDs fine so far. Installed the WinDVD 2000 software, popped in The Matrix. Nothing. WTF? Tried Fight Club. Nothing. Unhappiness ensues. Threw the WinDVD CD back in. Reading fine, can even watch the previews included with the software fine. Tried my DVDs again - a no-go. I've read the forums about This software not working the best in Win2K all the time, so I grab the PowerDVD trial. Still, nothing. I even tried SoftDVD, which came wih my Stealth III, but it doesn't work in Win2K [D/Ling the supposed fix now]. Now, for the actual question: Is it possible that my drive could read CDs, and still have problems reading DVDs? Should I head back to CC tomorrow? Open to ideas, -bZj
  16. OK, it's FIXED! Solution: bought a different brand [Hi-Val 12x, for a whole $10 more, and it came with PowerDVD]. Once again, WinDVD plays sound, but won't show the picture - I just get the WinDVD logo. Whatever, PowerDVD is working the best for me so far. SoftDVD is OK, but I can't disable the stupid 'Parental Guide', so I'm not allowed to watch Fight Club. No problem in PowerDVD though, so I guess that's my new player! Thanks for all the suggestions, -bZj
  17. I had ASPI drivers installed [4.5.7 from my Adaptec 2940 SCSI card], but I went ahead and installed the ones that came with WinDVD [4.6]. Here is the report from aspichk.exe: Code: LOG0143: ***************************************************************** LOG0144: Starting ADAPTECASPI.ASPICHK installer on Fri Feb 02 16:44:09 2001 ASPICHK0438: OS = Windows NT (5.00.2195) UPGRADE1004: c:\winnt\system32\wnaspi32.dll dated 09/10/1999 12:06:00, 45056 bytes. UPGRADE1062: c:\winnt\system\wowpost.exe version 4.6.0.1021 ASPICHK0582: ASPI is properly installed and is fully operational. A total of 3 host adapters have been detected. LOG0218: Closing installer log on Fri Feb 02 16:44:09 2001 LOG0219: ***************************************************************** I took it back, but the replacement still doesn't read DVDs. Strangest thing though, I was testing The Matrix, and it started to play sound from the disk, but no picture - the sound was choppy. The newer ASPI drivers didn't help. This is starting to upset me. Any more ideas? I think I may need to pick up a different brand player. -bZj

Ok then, just what soundcard is the better 3D one in W2K?

I've heard many good things about the Philips Acoustic Edge card, but I don't think any of them specifically mentioned Win2K, so I'm not sure about performance. I really like this card though, for all it's features, it beats the SBLive! [on paper anyway]. If anyone has this card [and uses Win2K], I would be greatful to hear your experiences. -bZj
  19. Quick scenario: My whole family has logins on my machine, but my brother is the only who ever uses it. Now, he was logged in, surfing the web or something. I wanted to show him a video, or a picture or something, but he doesn't have permissions to get to my stuff. It would suck to log-off the 'Net, log me in, change permissions, log him back in, log back onto the 'Net, just to show him a video. In *nix, there is the 'su' command [switch user], which will allow you to gain the permissions of another system user, which would have solved my problem. Is there such a command in Windows? Thanks in advance, -bZj
  20. Thanks for the help - I had heard of the 'Run as...' command before, but didn't know how to get there. As for the dial-up connection, I'll give that a try, but as stated, logging-off will probably close the little program that keeps me on - gotta love free I'net service. Thanks all, -bZj
  21. That's what I think I'm doing tomorow. I got SoftDVD MAX working, but it's the same thing, doesn't read DVDs. I noticed that the tray is a bit loose on one side - after I noticed a nice rattling noise - so I think a replacement is in order. -bZj

    Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2

Hey guys, that above link is/was to my server [lucky I saw this]. I no longer have the school connection, so that server is gone, but I'm putting it up on my web site now. It's hosted in the UK, so a US d/l may be slow, but it's a strong server, so just keep pulling it. http://www.down8.f2s.com/files/games/THawk2.exe -bZj

    SCSI Controllers

SCSI is almost always made backwards compatible [except in the case of the LVD/fibre connection], but I would check Adaptec.com, and just be sure it has the 50-pin connector. If so, the you're fine. -bZj
