I was just using plain ol', default blue, but I've had this Penny-Arcade comic as my desktop for a while now [leaving my desktop still mostly blue]. It comforts me knowing others are as... sick as I am. -bZj

Oo oo, you could use Opera, then the pop ups would be more easily handled. -bZj

I will gve the obvious answer, to get it out of the way: Turn off scripting. -bZj

Yes, it was Xerox's PARC labs. From what I know of this, Xerox gave away their GUI idea to Apple on purpose. They didn't want to develop it, put wanted to see the technology succeed. The conversation that I remember about this took place a while ago, so I may be off a little, but I'm pretty sure the GUI wasn't 'stolen'. -bZj

Well, you definitely better keep your mouth shut, he may send the Thought Police after you. I think 33% is an extreme exaggeration. I would believe like 10%, or maybe even 15%, but 33% is ludicrous, why would all the gamers over on [H] be runing Win2K if the difference between it and Win9x was that great? I've even seen numbers that put 2K ahead of ME. -bZj

Mr.Guvernment I think your "MANY MANY sources" need to be checked, b/c that information was only vaguely true, at best. People usually refer to PCs as x86 machines, which Macs are not, so that comparison is suspect. I still think Intel and MS are the owners of the home PC, but they are fading recently. [This is not to say I worship either, their business practices are questionable, but they built the home PC.] Only MacOS X is based on BSD/Unix, the previous MacOSes were not Unices at all. I don't know where you get the Java based idea, but I'd like to read about it, if you could give me a link. -bZj

How the hell does a fatter pipe cuase higher pings? The opposite should be true. I thinks you're getting screwed. -bZj

UNIX is not open source. Or wasn't at the time anyway. True UNIX [not to imply True64] was owned by AT&T, and they charged for it, you betcha. My favorite part of this whole OS war is that KDE et al. are trying to make their GUIs look like Windows, while MS is trying to move away and offer alternatives, more like... the various Unices. And, MS did license the GUI from Apple, so it wasn't 'stolen' as one could argue that KDE et al. did do to Windows. -bZj

Well, technically, you've always had the ability to turn in a bug report, you just had to be un-lazy enough to go to their web site and do it. Also, I'm theorizing that the 'File a bug report' link in the betas of Whistler is only for the betas, as that is what betas are for. Can you imagine how many bug report MS would get every hour? They don't have that kind of mail server capacity. -bZj

WTF? This was like 10th or something on the page? Who be slippin'? Bizniump! -bZj

I don't think 40C is too hot, 50C I would worry. Mine's about 40C under load [500E @ 700]. I think 130F is too hot, but under that, it's just how cold you want it, obviously, cooler is better [to a point]. -bZj

I saw something recently - on Slashdto, I think - that had someone announcing a video camera that records straight to a mini DVD. Now, that's pretty sweet. -bZj

Or, if you're talking about the list of network devices when you go to 'Network Neighborhood" > 'Properties', then you can just select them and hit the 'Delete' key. Worked for me. -bZj

I'd be inclined to agree with CUViper, but the W2K Help File doesn't say that specifically, only that NTFs can't be used on floppies. I didn't find anything else on this though. Sorry, -bZj

I've been using ActivePerl for a couple months now, learning Perl in my spare time, and I've had only a few problems. I think most of them are due to my using a book from a slightly older version of Perl, and the little differences between the *nix and Windows implementation. It has a nice .MSI installer package, too. -bZj

There is, I belive it's called Window Shade. Not sure where to get it though, check www.download.com -bZj

That's strange. Have you contacted Octek? -bZj

Over at [H], there is a guy from Alaska who uses drer tubing to direct outside air directly onto his CPU. I never heard him speak of moisture problems, only that his hdds were getting too cold and freezing up. -bZj

How about the 'Send To...' menu. -bZj -
I don't know about the AthlonClassic v. Duron thing, but I would expect it depends on what you're doing, like the Katmai v. Celeron issue. As for DDR v. RAMBUS, that's a holy war mine field right now. They are both more expensive than SDRAM now, which is all that matters for some, but DDR is a bit cheaper than RDRAM [128 for $90 and $140, respectively on PriceWatch]. They are both 'better' than SDRAM, RDRAM running at 400MHz, and DDR running at 266MHz, but the numbers are misleading, as RDRAM has a higher latency, which clogs up some of that bandwidth. DDR is recently released, so I wouldn't want one of these first gen boards. RDRAM has been out for a while, but is only used with the P4, and a few PIII server boards. I think I'll wait for the second round of DDR boards before picking it up. I am not zealously against RDRAM, as most people are, but I think DDR is the way to go. I've heard recently of QDR, Quad-Data Rate RAM, which will run at 133x4=533MHz. That should be sweet. -bZj

This is a good point, about changing out parts. Does this mean we have to save a key, like PGP? Also, what about those without modems or any I'net connection? I have two computers, but only one is hooked to the 'Net right now. I don't have a huge problem with running a cracked version [my Win2K install as witness], but I'd prefer to have a legal version [given the money]. I think inablility to get ICS working shouldn't bar me from upgrading my second computer, and if I was to throw the modem in the second machine, would that modify the ID number? Inane ramblings.... -bZj

If you're using the ASUS Probe software, that's your problem. That is rarely correct on my friend's P3V4X. It shows similar spikes in temperature, and was causing problems with "overheats". Uninstall that POS, and use MBM, it's a lot more accurate. Otherwise, I got nothing. -bZj

you know, I've seen a bunch of dual-PII mobos on eBay lately. You could see what they have, then look for things along those lines. -bZj

OK, I know what BNC is, but what is AUI?Everything I've found talks about BNC vs. UTP, not AUI. The reason I ask is this: I am setting up a network between two computers [one Win2K, one Win95], and the hub I have is an old generic 8-port with a switch on the back that goes between BNC and AUI. I'm having a bit of trouble with my connection between the two [i usually use a router], and I'm not sure what this switch should be set to. I was told this hub works, so I have ruled that out [hopefully]. Thanks for any help, -bZj
