Scolling Program Menu..set to off, BUT....

That 'Scroll..." has nothing to do with what you explain. Right click on your taskbar > Properties > Uncheck 'Use Personalized Menus'. -bZj -

No, don't close it yet... Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. OK, now you can close it. -bZj -
I don't remeber who makes it, but my university offers a program called Xwin32 to us [possibly just called Xwin], so you may want to look into that, try your IT department first. -bZj

OK, here's something fun and exciting. Go to try Quake3 today, and I get the code down below. I played it two days ago. No new hardware/software. The only thing I've done is set up accounts for my family members on this machine. I'm running Win2KServer, SP1 (full specs). The new acocunts are just 'Users' with default privileges, I log in as Adminstrator. I tried to run the game under my brother's account, got the error. Logged back into my account, go the error. What the hell? I know it's an older version, but it worked two days ago. Any ideas? My only thought is that when I tried it under my brother's acount, it corrupted something. Is that possible? I wouldn't think so. -bZj ___BEGIN_CODE___ Q3 1.15c win-x86 Jan 13 2000 ----- FS_Startup ----- Current search path: D:\Quake3\baseq3\zaebos.pk3 (6 files) <...blah...blah...blah...> D:\Quake3/baseq3 ---------------------- execing default.cfg execing q3config.cfg couldn't exec autoexec.cfg ...detecting CPU, found Intel Pentium III ------- Input Initialization ------- Initializing DirectInput... I fixed it by opening Excel first, then playing Quake3. I don't know what fixed it really. I was working one day, got bored, tried it and it worked. Strange thing is that earlier version was a crack. I now own the game, and can't play it. When ever I start it, I get a black screen right after the 'id' intro. The only way to get out of it is to do a hard restart. To top it off, my CD-ROM is on the blink, so I can't reinstall it. Oh well, UT must suffice for now - actually Tony Hawk has been beaten in my Q3 downtime. -bZj

You can go a different route, but it is a little unsecure. If you enable the Guest account that is disabled by default in Win2K, that should fix your problem, and allow regular 'Read-Only' access to your drives. The side-effect oft his being that people can logon to your machine anonymously, but using something like ZoneAlarm coudl watch your back there. Best of luck, -bZj

Your hardware config seems fine. I believe you could also run the cable modem to the switch and have each computer go into it as well [saves you that extra NIC in the first box]. As for ICS, I'm working on that right now.... Good luck, -bZj

I had an Etherlink III that worked fine too, before I picked up a PCI Linksys card. -bZj

Is there any way to change the default application for different users on the same machine? Scenario: I use WinAmp for my MP3s, and basically keep all of my MP3s in the playlist, so when my brother opens WinAmp under his account, my playlist is there. I'd like to change his default MP3 player to WinMediaPlayer, so when he opens an MP3 it won't take him to my playlist in WinAmp, but will take him to WMP instead. Possible? -bZj

I plan on getting a new hardrive soon [old 10gigger is full up], and was debating SCSI vs. ATA100. I already have an Adaptec 2940U. This is just my home rig, 'Net, gaming, word processing, etc. I'm looking for comments/suggestions on the performance difference between picking up a ~18GB UltraSCSI drive for my card, and a ~20GB+ATA100 card [or new mobo]. Both options run around $250±50. I know the throughput for UltraSCSI is only 20/s [compared to 100/s], but would I notice the offload in CPU ultilization, etc.? I think I'm leaning towards the ATA100, and using the SCSI card for peripherals [CD-ROM/DVD] and back-up hdds. -bZj

Well, I run Win2K Server on a SY-7VCA, with no problems on my old StealthIII S540. I did notice the first time I installed, the motherboard drivers funked things all the hell. The next install I did, I only installed the AGP and onboard sound drivers, and haven't had any problems since - even after up[censored] to the newest 4in1s. Good luck, -bZj [e]stupid auto-insert of signature[/e] [ January 02, 2001: Message edited by: Down8 ]

Thanks all- Got the responses I hoped for. ATA100 + Promise looks like the way to go - relegating my old SCSI card to DVD/CD-RW duty. If I get this network admin job I'm applying for maybe I'll have the cash for Ultra160 and do the OS/Games=SCSI and Storage=IDE - but I don't got cash like that now. Lates, -bZj

Cruise da Linux sites. They got all the goodies on it - if you can do with some programmin', then you can do as one guy did: rewrote it so it catalogged his CDs. -bZj [ December 30, 2000: Message edited by: Down8 ]

Don't know where they're stored, but here's how to clean 'em: Tools > Internet Options > General [tab] > History [section] > Clear History [button]; And Tools > Internet Options > Content [tab] > Personal information [section] > Autocomplete [button] > Web addresses [checkbox]; -bZj

I've seen this happen before, but a quick restart always fixed it. -bZj [This message has been edited by Down8 (edited 27 December 2000).]

what happens if you mix PC-133 & PC-100 on same system?
Down8 replied to whoisurdaddy's topic in Slack Space
Tell him the truth: 1) A small temporal distubance will start in your computer case. 2) The difference in the two RAM speeds will continue to grow, until the temoral distubance over-takes your computer, and starts making your computer tell the future of the stock marktet. 3) The end-result of this new information will be that you begin to gamble at in the market, until you are extremely rich, but after the temporal distortion is to big to fit in to your house, the predictions will be from a difference space-time continuum, and you will lose your entire fortune, leaving you penniless and mentally disturbed - a wretched piece of a man. Or nothing will happen. They will both run at whatever you tell them to run at in the BIOS. My friend and I have had mixed RAM speeds for the past 6 months with no problems. I run 1x128@PC133 and 1x128@PC100, both at 140MHz. -bZj PS: None of the above GUARANTEEs are guaranteed. -
More memory. Tried and true way to speed up Win2K. I notice a great improvement when going from 128 to 256, and a 128MB module is only about $50 right now. -bZj

Well, I would see this as comparable to a motherboard switch, and the best choice would be a re-install of Win2K. One thing I've seen work though is to put them back on the 33 controller, go into device manager and uninstall all you motherboard and controller drivers, then swith them ot the 66 controller and start Win2K up. It should detect the new controller. Wish you luck, -bZj
-
This may be an obvious question, but did you get a chance to load the 'third-party SCSI drivers'? -bZj
-
If only. I have a Stealth III S540. Needin' a GeForce2 baaaad. I'll try re-installing my vid.drivers later today. -bZj
