From: http://www.dlink.com/products/broadband/di701/ "The DI-701 has one local 10/100 Dual Speed Ethernet port and one 10Mb Ethernet global port. The local port can be connected directly to a single computer to provide added security from hackers and others on the Internet or it can be connected to an Ethernet or Fast Ethernet hub or switch to provide Internet Sharing and Firewall protection to a local area network. The global port can be connected to any Cable, DSL, or Broadband modem with an Ethernet port." -bZj

I'm moving to Northen California [from LA], and I'm going ot take the train [as usual]. I will, of course, be taking my ***-to- I mean, computer, and I wanted some input on transporting the monitor. I can throw the box in the box it came in, and check it, but the monitor is a 20" HP, and weighs a couple tons. They won't check anything over 50lbs, or anything beakable [gl***]. I've seen straps for cases for LAN parties, is there anything like this for a monitor? My only idea so far is to rig some rope as a handle and put padding and something hard in front of the screen, and carry it on [hella redneck]. I ain't got the cash to ship it. Any ideas? -bZj

Well, I found some monitor cases, but they are all $200-500, so I'm still thinking.... I may end up using a smaller monitor until I can have someone drive it up for me. Damn, life without my 1280x1024, I don't relish that thought. -bZj

I'm just kididng about the ISO. I was interested in knowing what you think the chances are of a bum like me getting chosen for a beta-tester. Does MS usually choose IT people, or do they spread out the testing over a broad base of people? I'm guessing they would actually be less likely to choose me because I am a student, with a high speed connection, which makes me more likely to throw it up on a w4r3z server [not that I would, I keep my w4r3z to myself ]. I may be getting a Network Admin job, so I'll probably get a TechNet subscription, but in the mean time, I was wondering who beta tests MS' stuff. -bZj

Good info. I'm pretty sure I could 'make an impact'. I can crash anything. 10 minutes alone with a machine - Windows, *nix or Mac - and it's going down. More oftent han not though, I can also figure out what went wrong, and fix it. Not that I could present proof of this to MS. Anyway.... -bZj

Oh, we're giving answers? I thought we were just spouting protocols. , -bZj

From what I read about it [researching for your post], you do need software to wake a computer up. IBM makes some, so does 3Com, but I couldn't find out if it was downloadable, or any other freeware/shareware places to get that type of software. It has to be out there, though. IBm, Intel and 3Com has a lot of information on the general ideas, but weren't very helpful as to software. -bZj

We use a FlowPoint router. Has always worked fine for us. Telnet in to change stuff, embedded firewall, $300. -bZj

Do those need the CD to play? I had this problem with DiabloII. It was because my CD-Rom woudl spin down, and the copmputer would freeze until it could spin back up and be checked. -bZj

So, this posts start out being about my AHA-2940U. I thought it may have been a 2940UW, and I wanted to take a look before posting anything. So, I pull my case to the edge of my desk, reach back and undo the screws. Then, when I reach to pull off the side panel: ZAP! Off goes my computer. I hit the damn main power swith on the power supply in the back. That sucked [H]ard. Well, I figured out that it's only a 2940U. -bZj

There are thrid party apps that do this. Most often they involve using a different shell, so look around places like www.litestep.com and www.darkstep.com -bZj [This message has been edited by Down8 (edited 04 December 2000).]

You mean the splash screen? This: Look around the registry. Maybe www.RegEdit.com knows. -bZj
