    DirectX 8 anybody?

It's all good, as they say... It did seem to help my 3D Mark score a little bit, but not much. -bZj

  4. Shortwinded question: How do I set a drive as removable, so I don't have to leave my external bay on all the time? Longwinded version: OK, I got an Adaptec 2940U from a friend to replace my dying AHA-1535. So I've been testing all my old SCSI drives to see which ones are dead, and which ones just looked dead because of the old card. I found 3 that work [so far], 730MB, 1.5GB and 2GB [yes, they are old drives]. I threw one on the inside of my case [not much room for others], and two in my external SCSI bay. Now, I will only be using the external ones as a place to throw ISOs before I get them burned, so the case doesn't need to be on all the time. I want to set these two disks as removable drives. I cut the power to the external bay, and a warning popped up that said something to the effect of: "Unsafe removal of drive. Blah blah blah. [X] Check here to have this image displayed in the task bar for easy removal of this drive." I left the box checked, and even rebooted, but I never saw that icon in my systray. So, I go to troubleshooter, and it says that I should set it as removable by going through the 'uninstall/unplug hardware' routine. OK, I do that, but nothing is listed in the box for me to set as removable. everywhere I look, it still says "Local disk", instead of "Removable disk". I remeber that there is just a check box in the drive properties to set it as removable in Win98, but there's nothing like that in Win2K [server, SP1]. I can just "Scan for hardware changes", but I would rather have them set as actual removable drives. All help is appreciated, -bZj [This message has been edited by Down8 (edited 07 November 2000).]

    Networking and a DSL

Crazy is right, I forgot that I do have a router hooked into my switch. If you throw Linux [assuming you don't have Win2K (I don't know of any clients off hand that would run on Win95)] on to that old machine, you can set it up as a DHCP type server, so your 2 other computers would get a new IP as they logged onto the old computer. Of course, you may be able to buy an extra IP from your ISP [i have 8 for my network], solving the issue with the second option I mentioned. -bZj

    Networking and a DSL

Welcome to broadband networking, and the board. Do you have an internal DSL modem? if so, you will probably need to grab two NICs [Network Interface Cards], one for each machine, and a cross-over cable from a local store. I believe Win98 has ICS [internet Connection Sharing] built in, so you just need to set it up [look around Microsoft.com for instructions]. Set your faster computer up as the host [the one with the DSL modem], as it will take some resources to share the connection. An easier way, from mt point of view, is to have an external DSL modem, and run it into a hub, which both computers can hook into with their own NICs. Oh, your connection won't be split between the two computers - unless they are both pulling 320k. Each one will have the line to itself if the other isn't D/Ling. I'm sure other people will be able to give answers in more detail... -bZj

I have a Compaq branded version of your mouse, and it works fine all the time, except... in games. No UT or Q3A extra buttons . But, as for the I.E. jerky scroll, there is an option in IE [Tools > Internet Options > Adavnced > Use Smooth Scrolling] that might help. -bZj

I don't mean to piss everyone off..........

Contrary to what this may seem like, I like this discussion, and am not attacking or anything like that. I think some one who has been in the game as long as MS is the standard, as is evidenced by the fact that anything you buy will have Windows drivers, but might not have Linux drivers [changing, but still fact]. Also, if Ms was to only follow, they would no longer be a leader, which is what every company wants to be. I don't use any USB devices now, so I only hope 2.4 will help X run better. Why do you see Linux standardizing in 2 years? Well, truthfully, the only legal copy of a MS OS I have is WinME [which I won from MS, you'd think I'd be more grateful ], and I don't run it because my friend got me Win2K. But, while I do think their products are a bit high in price, I think that of most PC stuff, so that's business as usual... If I had the money though... I still wouldn't pay $1000 for Win2K Server, but I might pay $300 for Win2K Pro [i am a starving student, literaly]. I still can't get RedHat to refresh properly. Is having a new kernel every two weeks a good thing? Definately not for the home user. They already get pissy when they need to upgrade from 3.1 to 98 how many years later? Can there be a standard if it changes every two weeks? If I can run a server off my home system, then that = cheaper that Linux to me. Witness: yes, I can run my 486 as a server, but that is because it is a million years old and Linux supports every part of it now. To run a truely reliable server from Linux, it will cost you just as much in supported hardware [or lesss, if you use older hardware, but it might not be reliable then], and tech support than it does to run an Nt server where everything is supported, and a company would be run out of town for not providing complete documentation. Nt is close to Linux in price when you add in the technical know-how cost. EPSXE is free because that is the nature of people who use Linux: they want things for free. Don't get me wrong, I don't think they are all theives and h4x0rz, but Linus released Linux as a free wannabe *nix. Linux people [*glittering generalization alert*] want the stability of a true UNIX without the price tag. Who do you ***** to when EPSXE doesn't work though? No rights without responsiblilties. I do actually have an early Mac OS X Intel port. I havent tried it yet though. I do want to though. I hope Windows doesn't get replaced in the future, but gets more... liked. and, more stable for the DataCenter Server, but I think it serves it's purpose very well for home/workstation use. This is fun, -bZj Remember: With out Windows, MS would have never been hacked!

    Eternal quesiton: UT or Q3

From the research I've done, Q3A is still like $40, while UT can be gotten for a bit cheaper. Reasons I play Q3A: I just wanna get my frag on. I play Q3A when I just want to slaughter bots like mad. My friends and I are big fans of cooperative team modes [capture the flag, etc.], and we've mastered Q3A on Nightmare, so it's just a frag fest. Because of this, I usually play Q3A alone, to improve my own DM skills. Reasons I play UT: When I want to play a game that I haven't quite mastered yet. My friends and I are moving up the ladder, but we're only around Masterful/God-like, so we haven't topped it out yet. This one takes more skill though, as the AI is better. the graphics are arguably better, and I do seem to get a bit better frame rate in UT. My little bit of input, -bZj
