I don't mean to piss everyone off..........

I would disagree with some parts of the above: Why should MS Open Source Windows? So you can build cute little widgets into your OS with your mad h4x0ring ski11z? Or so you could get it for free, knowing that is is the best all-around OS on the market [which it would cease to be if Open Sourced]? Linux is growing progressively, as the ad suggests, and will have USB support in the 2.4 kernel release [if if ever gets released]. The fear of splintering is very real, and could kill the *nix wannabe if some standardization is not seen soon. MS can expect you to pay seemingly high prices because: 1) You will [or you just grab a w4r3z version], and 2) Because they have spent how many years working on Win2K? Do you think all of their programmers were working for peanuts? Somebody has to pay those guys in Redmond [and keep Gates in a swimming pool full of money and the bloody souls of sacrificed virgins]. While Open Source can be "innovative, original, and generally fix bugs faster", this is contrary to what I've seen: Hacked together work-arounds that almost work, if you've got this exact network card in your 3rd PCI slot held down with Winterfresh gum, not JuicyFruit, as JuicyFruit would cause a system crash. I think people are more willing to build stuff that works when they are getting paid to do so. Would you really like to see the prices drop? So MS could layoff half it's coding staff, and Whistler can get released in 2020 instead of 2002? If you don't want to pay, don't. 5c4n 7h3 w4r3z 51735 4nd f7p 51735 4nd 5734L 17, but first: click on this |BANNER|, then go to the 129th word on the page, use that as you password and click on that, and the 32nd word on the next page as your username. And don't forget to upload, because there is a 12 to one [u/l to d/l] ratio on this site. I use Win2K Server because I want to be able to play the latest games, use the latest hardware, and still maintain some semblance of stability. If I didn't want a server, I would use my legal copy of WinMe, and if I wanted to only run a pure server, I would run a real *nix, like Solaris or HP-UX or something, on real hardware, not a PC [personal computer]. Win2000 cannot detect ME for duel boot

Well, I just checked both of my Win2K CDs [Pro and Server], and they both have BOOTDISK directories. Do you perhaps have only an upgrade disk, or possibly a thug copy? Any way, I've put all the disks and the utility on my site: http://thugbox.dhs.org/shared/ntcomp/ There are directories for Server and Pro [which is what I assume you have]. The MAKEBT32.EXE is so you can make them from within Windows, while the MAKEBOOT.EXE is for DOS. They should guide you through everything. Good luck, -bZj

    Warning: FilePool.com

So I was D/Ling some moviez and one required that I download this stupid 'agent' from FilePool.com. I install the thing, and it looks really cool, something like GetRight, but with different 'features', or whatever. All was fine, untill I started to D/L the first file: BAM! my computer restarts. OK, that sucked, I guess no moviez for me today. Win2K compes back up: BAM! my computer restarts because this damn program was in my startup folder and tried to resume the previous file D/L. Luckily, on the third try, I caught the program and closed it before it crashed me again, and promptly unistalled that piece of crap. Just watch out for this place, or let me know if their program worked for you. -bZj

    AMD

You might be wiating a while for dual AMD CPUs: Quote: From SharkyExtreme.com We're still missing multi-processor systems. Sometime in 2001 we should be seeing boxes with dual Athlon CPUs. We'll reserve our thoughts on heat and power consumption for now and just keep our fingers crossed for the 760MP (multi processing) chipset to land in San Jose sometime soon. -bZj

    Conversion to NTFS Problems

I have a 10gig drive with 2 partitions, both are FAT32, b/c I was going to dual boot and wanted to be able read evrything. I've never installed Win9x though, and don't plan on it, so the last time I reinstalled Win2K, I formatted C: in NTFS. I recently tried to convert D: to NTFS and here's what happened: Code: C:\>help convertConverts FAT volumes to NTFS.CONVERT volume /FS:NTFS [/V] volume Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon), mount point, or volume name. /FS:NTFS Specifies that the volume to be converted to NTFS. /V Specifies that Convert should be run in verbose mode.C:\>convert d: /fs:ntfs /vThe type of the file system is FAT32.Enter current volume label for drive D: ide1b-fat32Convert cannot gain exclusive access to the D: drive,so it cannot convert it now. Would you like toschedule it to be converted the next time thesystem restarts (Y/N)? nC:\>exit Now, does anyone know what's up? I have very little room available on that drive [like 2%, ISOs take up a lot of room ], could that be the problem? also, is there any chance of losing data if I do schedule it to be converted at next restart? System specs: Soyo 7VCA, PIII 500E@667, 256MB RAM, Win2K Server [full specs]. Thanks, -bZj [This message has been edited by Down8 (edited 30 October 2000).]

    Remove Icon Names..

I've not been able to get this to work in Win2K, but it worked in Win98SE: Run: regedit; Do a search for 'Recycle Bin'; Rename those entries to what ever you want; Reboot, and hope it actually works. -bZj

Anybody know about a 'Crusoe' processor

Coincidentaly [i don't know if anyone who cares doesn't already know], Linus Torvalds, the inventor of Linux, works for Transmeta. Maybe working on the Crusoe chip is what is stalling the release of the 2.4 kernel...? -bZj

Upgraded my computer... I think. :/

I had a similar problem when I first built my system: lights, camera, no action, and nothing telling me there was something wrong. then my friend told me to make sure my chip was seated properly, since sometimes the chip needs to be held down while locking the ZIF socket, or it won't be in all the way. So try reseating your chip. Failing that, I would try to swap your parts out with other known working parts and see if you may have gotten a bad chip/board/something. AM I the olny one that kicka HUGE kick out of making Tony Hakw fall flat on has ass in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 Demo? that sends me to bed happy nightly... well, that and pr0n. [POLL] Whistler or Windows 2000?

I don't plan on leaving Win2K until I upgrade to Whistler on an IA64 chip. Hopefully, they [intel or AMD] can accomplish this in the next 4 years. I mean, if I can still use my 486/66MHz with Win95 five years later, then my PIII/500E@667 with Win2K should last for a while. -bZj
  18. Well, if you're using Win2K, there is a little button at the top, between 'Search' and 'History' that will bring up the Explorer view, but I don't know of any way to make it open like that when you dblClick on the Desktop icon. I would check Yahoo! for 'windows short cut keys' or something, or maybe Microsoft.com. -bZj

    Heat on your CPU

I wondered if anyone can throw out some ideas of how hot a CPU should be allowed to get. I have my PIII 500E overclocked to 667MHz, and it throws about 91F under normal usage, and about 114F under a full load (SETI or Unreal/Quake). I was thinking about getting a new HSF to replace the $10 one I got when I bought the chip. Open for suggestions/thoughts... -bZj [This message has been edited by Down8 (edited 18 October 2000).]
