    Heat on your CPU

Sweet. I got a Thermaltake Golden Orb today, and I've been running SETI for about 4 hours at 95F [35C]. Those damn things are better than I thought. Strange too: I picked up the Orb from Fry's in a little thug package, a total rip off, but it is a real Thermaltake, even according to Thermaltake's page. Still cost me $30 though. Next project: a better case fan. Mine is rediculously loud. Turn your speakers up a bit above normal, and you'll hear what I hear when I'm at my machine. I tihnk that fans is about dead. Any recommendations on a specific case fan, or or they pretty much the same? -bZj

It's a strange world we live in... "The Internet will bring people from around the world together." But it won't make them play nice with each other... -bZj [This message has been edited by Down8 (edited 21 October 2000).]

They are actually about to drop a chip in the 500-600MHz, based on their new 'Joshua' core. Although, from the preliminary data, it looks like it will have sub-Celeron performance. But hey, poor peeps need computers too... I mean I had to save up a whole summer just so I could get the real deal, a PIII 500E. Figured I'd slip in my vote. although, I wouldn't trust any Intel chip above 850MHz, cuz they've been rushing, which sacrifices quality. if I needed a computer that fast, I would probably go with a T-bird. But I'de still keep my PIII around for doing real work, and not just gaming. -bZj

    OLD PC's

MS's page [http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/upgrade/upgradereqs/default.asp]gives the req.s: 133 MHz or higher Pentium-compatible CPU. 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM recommended minimum; more memory generally improves responsiveness [4 gigabytes (GB) RAM maximum.] 2 GB hard disk with a minimum of 650 MB of free space. (Additional free hard disk space is required if you are installing over a network.) -bZj [This message has been edited by Down8 (edited 21 October 2000).]

Removal of SP1 Installation Backup Files?

I even took the time to search for this answer... But, it didn't really get answered. I installed SP1 on my new Win2K install, and I don't remember being asked if I wanted back up files. I don't need them, as I know everything is fine under SP1, but they are there and taking up 245MB, so I want to nix 'em. Can I just delete that $NtServicePackUnistall$ folder? -bZj

making a file that links to Shut Down command

I found a file that will force a complete reinstall - inetinfo.exe. It will eat 100% of your processor, then keep all of your www, ftp, smtp, and nntp servers from starting, then force your system to be a completely clean one [after you format and reinstall]. It's really a great little program. Well, back to reinstalling all my programs - a tolerable side-effect of inetinfo.exe crashes. -bZj

I had a K6-2 450, and it was about comparable to a Pentium 200. Those K6-2s jaded me against AMD for a long time to come. -bZj

I don't mean to piss everyone off..........

Damn, I wonder if MathML is supported? We could have some fun with that. We could play 'name that equation' or something. Here's one we can do from last week's midterm: "Statistical studies show that supply and demand for tires in a certain market are approximately given by the following linear supply and demand functions: Q(s)=100+4P Q(d)=1300-2P, where quantities are measured in units of 100 sets of tires and prices in units of 1$. a) Calculate the market clearing price, the market clearing quantity and the price elasticity of demand at the market clearing price. Due to a tax cut the income of consumers in the market increases. show graphically what effect this will have on the market clearing price and quantity (tires are a normal good!)." I'll post the answers later. Now, I should probably study for tomorrow's midterm. -bZj

20 pages yet? Almost... I think this was at 9 when I first came here. It's no C64, but I still have my 486/66MHz. now if I could just get the damn thing to run something other than Win95. Speaking of Linux , look at this banner that popped up when I entered this forum: I just thought that was kinda funny... -bZj [This message has been edited by Down8 (edited 18 October 2000).]

    Celery 2 rocks!

I wanna play too... For my money, Intel is the high quality chip maker right now. It looks like the P4 may change this, so a Sledgehammer may be in my future, but check out www.AlienWare.com [specifically: http://www.alienware.com/x/sector/systems/gaming_main.htm ]. They make high end gaming machines [in sweet little cases]. Guess what their top-of-the-line gaming computers use? A PIII 1GHz, and a 1GHz AMD. But, their high end graphics workstation uses a PIII 933MHz. AMD seems to be great for games, but I use my computer for more than just games. The last computer I had was an AMD K6-2 450MHz, and it was not much faster than my old P166 workstation at my office. My current PIII 500E is about 3 times as fast as that AMD machine. For this, I am a bit jaded against AMD, but from the media Intel looks to be sliding while trying to keep up in speed, which is sacrificing their general quality, especially on the IA-64. Whatever, as long as competition keeps the prices on the downfall, I don't care. My pennies, -bZj [This message has been edited by Down8 (edited 17 October 2000).]

    Any Reason To use WinME?

I should hope so, they had 2 years to make it better, including supporting more/newer hardware. -bZj
  19. If you really wanna put MacOS X on a PC. Let me know if anyone gets this working. I know others have, but the hardware supported is very limited. I haven't tried yet, but I will as soon as I get the real deal, and not this beta. It should be pretty powerful, as it is based on BSD, which is very secure, and a nice, free alternative to Linux as a Unix OS. -bZj [This message has been edited by Down8 (edited 16 October 2000).]

I wan to 64 bit sh*t too, if Intel ever gets IA64 out the damn doors... -bZj [This message has been edited by Down8 (edited 15 October 2000).]

    Physical Memory Dump

This happens to me more often than I'd like to admit, but i think it has to do with my cheap PC133 memory [and undue tweaking]. In your computer properties, there is an option "Startup and Recovery" in this there is and option about physical memory dump. turn this off, unless you are a programmer, or heavy sys admin. It is a dump of everything that was in your RAM to disk [X:\WINNT\MEMORY.DMP], so the file is wasting space [256 megs for me] on your drive. -bZj

Unable to share drive on w2kpro from 98...

I enabled my Guest account, b/c while 2 people run Win2K, most ppl on my network run Win9x, and we were having problems sharing, even when we made a user with their login names. But, we do have a firewall for our shared sDSL, which I think anyone who has a constant and direct connection to the 'Net should have. You can go in and try to strip even more privelidges from the Guest account though. -bZj
  23. I see what you mean about RAID for the desktop being gimmicky. But, the reason I would like RAID on my home computer [besides that I do run a server from it], is for the redundacy. The idea of never having to worry about crashing and losing all of my data is great. And, with IDE hardrives being so damn cheap right now, I think having RAID at home is not too unreasonable. -bZj

    Installing Win2000 Help

I would have to disagree with Froggy on this one. My friend has WinME on C: and Win2K Pro on E: of his one 30gig drive. No problems. He just edited the boot.ini after his reinstall of WinME and all was good. And, I'm pretty sure you can install WinMe on drives other than C:. -bZj

    RAM Speeds.

http://www-scf.usc.edu/~brianjon/ntcomp/MotherBoardMonitor5PB27.EXE That is Mother Board Monitor 5. It shows your RAM speed in Genereal => System Info. There's a copy of Sandra in that directory too. I've never used that program, but it might check RAM speed too. -bZj
