    " I'm coooold "

My chip stays pretty cool, with almost no extra cooling. I've had it OC'ed for a week now, and it never gets hot. I have a cheap-o HSF [$10 @ Fry's], and 1 case fan, and I had my case closed when I took the screenshot, but that varies. -bZj [edit] I guess I should note that when I run SETI@home and my usage is at 100%, my CPU temp jumps to about 114F. MS Linux: Shipping in November 2001

The code base if free, but is copyrighted by Linus Torvards. If you want to use his code to make a 'pay-for' version, you can, but you have to provide the source code to that as well, for free. This is why you can [and I have] download RedHat, SuSE, or any other version completely free. You just don't get any customer service. -bZj [edit] I just thought this was funny. MS Linux: Shipping in November 2001

But, they would have to release the OS for free if it is based on the Linux kernel, so I could run a MS OS legally. And, this might not be the worst thing for Linux. MS would guarantee that there was a group of programmers, not just hackers, on the project, so more things would be supported under Linux, whihc could allow for the greater progression of the whole OSS. OK, I'm done giving MS head. -bZj

    Carmageddon 2 in Win2k - Glide only?

If it is just the same game, why would I what to pay the $40 for it, when I just bought Carmageddon2 for $10? And, from the srceenshots I've seen, the graphics aren't really that much better. the textures are nicer, but the graphics are still kinda blocky and not much better than C2. -bZj

    Looking for opinionated answers

I don't use WinME, but my roommate does. He loves that system restore feature [cracked gamez can mess with your system ]. From seeing what it can do, I think it would be a great addidtion to Win2K. Another option, is Norton's Ghost, which, if I had the room, I would have made a Ghost of Win2K right after I installed it, so I didn't have to go through a complete reinstall if something does go wrong. Those are the only two I have any experience with. -bZj

    Un*x, specifically BSD

I know, I know, this is a Windows forum, but I strive to be a jack-of-all-trades. I was wondering if anyone knows of a particular distribution of the various Linux/BSDs that would be good to put on my old 486, so I can learn some Unix. I've tried Stormix, Mandrake, and am currently [as I type] trying to get FreeBSD 4.1.1 on to it, but I've had many problems, not the least of which is the limited [515MB] drive space. I think FreeBSd broke my CDROM, or it's time was just up. I'd prefer a BSD based distro, as those seems to have less bloat, but anything that will fit would be fine. -bZj ------------------ Code: =====ThugBox===== =====GimpBox=====Home built system: Just for fun:Soyo SY-7VCA Mainboard AST Bravo LC 4/66d[VIA ApolloPro 133A T82C694X] Intel 486/66MHz CPU[onboard sound] 40MB RAM [2x16, 2x4]PIII 500E [100FSB flip chip] 515MB Conner HddPNY 128MB PC100 RAM 3 1/2, 5 1/4, 2x CDROMOEM 128MB PC133 RAM 3com Etherlink II [Ext.Transcvr]Stealth III S540 Video ESS AudiodriveAdaptec 2940U SCSI [coming soon] FreeBSD 4.1.1LinkSys NC100v2 Ethernet [if I can get it installed]Quantum Fireball 10.3GB Hdd HP A4331D 20" Monitor @ 1280 Logitec MouseMan [Compaq] Win2K Server [v5.00.2195, SP-1] > [url=http://down8.dhs.org]http://down8.dhs.org[/url] [format => clean install] [email]brian@infinitejones.com[/email] Norton AntiVirus 2000 Covad 768kbps sDSL w/3com switch & Flowpoint Router [sharedx6]

    667MHz, stable as a rock!

OK, it's late, and I should be in bed, but I'm playing with my system. I got my PIII 500E to 667MHz with a FSB of 133. Nice for me. I was only looking for 650, but with the locked clock-multiplier, I just went for the 133, instead of my planned 5.5 x 118. The stranger things are as follows: 1) I got the OEM PIII, so there was no HSF, so I picked up a little $10 one, planning on getting a better one later. With the system overclocked, and with SETI@home running, my system doesn't get above 107F, at 5800RPMs. Even with a GlobalWin, or an Alpha on there, I would only get down to 95-100F. I do have my case open on one side, but still. 2) Then there is the Vcore setting of 1.73v, which is only strange because the FC-PGAs are supposed to run at 1.6v. I didn't set this, it's default Vcore. Anyone know why this is? Just me rambling... I'm going to bed now... -bZj ------------------ Code: =====ThugBox===== =====GimpBox=====Home built system: Just for fun:Soyo SY-7VCA Mainboard AST Bravo LC 4/66d[VIA ApolloPro 133A T82C694X] Intel 486/66MHz CPU[onboard sound] 40MB RAM [2x16, 2x4]PIII 500E @ 667MHz 515MB Conner Hdd[100FSB @ 133 flip chip] 3 1/2, 5 1/4PNY 128MB PC100 RAM ESS AudiodriveOEM 128MB PC133 RAM 3com Etherlink II [Ext.Transcvr] 3C503?Stealth III S540 Video Adaptec 2940U SCSI [coming soon] LinkSys NC100v2 Ethernet [No OS installed, yet]Quantum Fireball 10.3GB Hdd HP A4331D 20" Monitor @ 1280 Logitec MouseMan [Compaq] Win2K Server [v5.00.2195, SP-1] > [url=http://down8.dhs.org]http://down8.dhs.org[/url] [format => clean install] [email]brian@infinitejones.com[/email] Norton AntiVirus 2000 Covad 768kbps sDSL w/3com switch & Flowpoint Router [sharedx6] [This message has been edited by Down8 (edited 04 October 2000).]

Win2k and Linux Red Hat 6.0

You will, of course, need to throw Linux on a separate partition, as it will be reformatted, Linux-style. From my experience, I would say don't expect to use this partition while in Win2K, or vice versa. Although, I believe you can mount DOS drives from Linux, so the converse may be true [though, NTFS is probably a no-go for Linux]. The thing you should watch for, is LILOboot. I hate the Linux bootloader. all you get is a LILOboot%> prompt, and you have to type DOS hella quick, or into Linux you go. It's no were near as nice as the Win2K bootloader, with a list of OSes, and a counting time limit. I would suggest putting Linux on first, then Win2K, just as one would with Win9x, but there are sure to be ways around this. -bZj

    Eudora 5.0 crashes system

OK, damnit. I have tried 3 different Eudora versions. 4.3.2, 5.0beta, and now 5.0 final on 2 different installs of Win2K [Pro and now Server]. Every single one of these gives me the exact same results. I install it fine, but whether i restart or just go right to it, it freezes at the splash screen. Mouse and keyboard get locked up. Only thing I can do is hit the reset button. I have seen that most people get it installed fine, so I'm not expecting a Eudora bashing session, but I'm up for one. Let me know if anyone has had similar problems, and if you've found a way around it. Need Opinions on CD Drive

Hell Inferno, for that [almost] price, I can give you the ultimate all-in-one solution. Go to www.DealCatcher.com, and look for the buy.com $30 off $150 for new buyers [i don't remember buying anything from them... since I preordered Matrix anyway], then head over to buy.com, and buy this CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive for $208.95, so before shipping, it's only ~$180. And, I checked, it's supported in Win2K already. Probably not exactly what you're looking for, but I want one -bZj

I need EVERYONE'S input on this.

I hear you on this one Eddie. One thing that MS has done that could be of use is the system restore in WinME. My friend makes a copy of his system before installing anything, so he can always go back to how he was before, exactly. Obviuosly, this is of little use to the NT croud, but a similar system would be a nice addition to 2K. If space wasn't a problem, I would suggest a Ghosting of your drive, right after you install everything necessary [video drivers, etc.]. Beyond this, I don't know of anyway to 'keep it clean'. Let me know if you come up with one. -bZj

How to dual boot w2k and win98se?

That's weird. I had no install problems in Pro, and have since formated that partition, installed Server instead, and just used the same shortcut, without reinstalling the game. I guess I just got lucky. Sorry I can't be of more help, -bZj

    Win2k Boot Up Screen Problem

Or, you could just open boot.ini in NOTEPAD and remove one of the Win2K references. Open Notepad, and go to C:\, tell it to "Open" and type boot.ini, b/c it won't be shown in there. -bZj

I would never expect a pre-release to be perfect, maybe I'm wierd. Whistler users out there, let me know if everything works perfectly. I.E. for the Mac has the best support for CSS and DOM compliance to date. Could it be because they got to start from scratch and didn't have to embed the program in the OS? Maybe. I seem to get the opposite problem: I.E. will tell me that a page doesn't exist, when i was just there, but NS finds it just fine. I wish I had gotten a sreenshot of the day I.E. told me that Yahoo! didn't exist. I would rather get a slightly skewed page, than no page at all. One thing that is currently wrong with the Mozilla project is the fact that too many people are working on it and there is no leadership [sorry Opensouce Advocates], and NS6 may never get released. As for the MSN browser... I don't know where to begin. That's is the WORST EXCUSE FOR A BROWSER I HAVE EVER SEEN. I would rather use Lynx. It is small because it has no functionality. Besides, NS6 promises to be a 10MB install. To say that Netscape has "always sucked", is to say that all browsers have always sucked. Every browser out is based on NCSA Mosaic, which was Netscape 1.0. [Re: Help > About I.E.] A reason I.E. is becoming standard, is because MS forced it upon people [Re: MS vs. DOJ]. My school [uSC, one of the backbones of the Internet (if you send e-mail on the West Coast, it goes through us or Stanford)], used Netscape exclusively, until they were forced to change, because MS embedded their browser in their OS. Besides, it was nice to sign on in the lab and have a browser and your e-mail all right there. The last point about AOL has a lot of merit. How does it go? "My only love sprung from my only hate," or something like that. But, just wait, soon it will be MSAOLDisney, and we will never need another company to compete with them, because they will be the best, and all others will be exterminated/assimilated. -bZj [edit] I forgot to reply to the NS 5 comment: There was no NS 5, or rather 6 is 5. The number jump is a pure marketing ploy, to imply that they are further along than I.E. 5.x. [/edit] [This message has been edited by Down8 (edited 21 September 2000).]

OK, follow me on this one... That is a pre-release. It isn't even a beta yet. It is there for you to help with the code, not to use as your primary browser. And, NS's CSS is completely complaint with CSS 1.0, and most of 2.0. Also, NS install is less than 80MB [which will shrink to even less when 6 is released], while a comparable install of I.E. is well over 100MB, but you don't notice that, because it is embedded in your OS. -bZj [edit] The strangest thing is that the Mac version of I.E. is the best available browser right now...
