I'd like to know this too. Although, I was thinking about grabbing a new board, and another chip, later in the year, I think I heard that my chip [PIII 500E] is like one of three that doesn't support SMP. Can someone verify this?

I got that message too, but I don't care as much about customization as optimization. -bZj

Win2K [esp. Pro] is totally built for laptops, with the power altering stuff. This is obviously somthing you don't need, but Win2K has an option that lets you tell it what kind of machine it is on [i forget where, I'll post again if I remember], i.e. laptop, workstation, server, terminal, etc. I would definiately run the checkupgrade utlity though. -bZj

I'm pretty sure you can't convert from NTFS to FAT32, at least not with out third party software. I would check out Partition Magic, it may be able to do this, but I would Ghost your drive before attempting it. -bZj

I just picked up a [legal] copy of Carmageddon 2, and it runs fine, but the networking doesn't seem to work. When ever I host a game, it just says it is waiting for other players, and never goes anywhere. I can go back to the menu, but nothing ever happens. This happens on both open and closed games. I did install IPX, and nothing changed. My friend has WinME, and he gets the same thing. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, -bZj PS: I'm p[osting this to "Games" and "Networking" ------------------ Code: =====ThugBox===== =====GimpBox=====Home built system: Just for fun:Soyo SY-7VCA Mainboard AST Bravo LC 4/66d[VIA ApolloPro 133A T82C694X] Intel 486/66MHz CPU[onboard sound] 40MB RAM [2x16, 2x4]PIII 500E [flip chip] 500MB Conner HddPNY 128MB PC100 RAM 3 1/2, 5 1/4, 2x CDROMOEM 128MB PC133 RAM 3com Etherlink II [Ext.Transcvr]Stealth III S540 Video Windows 95 [v4.00.1111]LinkSys NC100v2 Ethernet pcAnywhere 9.2Adaptec AHA-1535A SCSI [so I can leave it in the closet]Quantum Fireball 10.3GB Hdd 2 DEC SCSI Hdds [~3.5GB total] NEC 3x SCSI CDROM [Ext.w/Caddy] HP A4331D 20" Monitor Logitec MouseMan [Compaq] ^in about 12 peices on my floor^Win2K Pro [v5.00.2195, SP-1] [Will be installing Linux][format => clean install] Norton AntiVirus 2000 Covad 768kbps sDSL w/3com switch & Flowpoint Router [sharedx6]

Good to know. I guess I can atribute my new-found quick network to my new Ethernet card, and not running all that extra crap [TCP/IP rules]. -bZj

That's why I limited my .sig to what was necessary. It fits on my 20", without scrolling sideways, but might not on others, but screw them, get a better monitor! How can someone run a PIII 700 or 800 on a dinky 17"? I mean, the monitor is the culmination of all the work/money you put into the machine [yes I know it also the most expensive part, but that's the way it should be]. GET A BIGGER MONITOR!!! Only kidding, of course. -bZj

SLAVE ZERO DOESN'T WORK?!?!?! Damn, I've been dying to play that game, but haven't gotten it from my friend yet. I will, of course, give it a go myself. -bZj

Um, I think it is called WindowBlinds, but I don't know who makes it, as it doesn't seem to run on Win2K. But, before I installed Win2K, I remember there being an option that mentioned Win2K settings. I've uploaded it here: http://www-scf.usc.edu/~brianjon/ntcomp/winblind.exe . Let me know if you get it to work. If this doesn't work, try http://www.litestep.com , or http://www.darkstep.com . These are more than just modifiers, but they work. -bZj [edit] Gosh, Tripod suck ass. I had to put it on my school account. [/edit] [This message has been edited by Down8 (edited 06 September 2000).]

Use Notepad, get the sigs aligned how you want them, then enclose them in [ CODE ]and [ /CODE ] tags [without the spaces]. This preserves the spacing, but adds those damn <HR>s, which almost defeats the pupose. -bZj

I have nothing better to do right now, so I want to add my 2 pennies. I think the long, system .sig is perfect, when used right. It is the simplest way to keep all your specs in one place and not type them again, so you can get/give the help that is needed. I managed to cram 2 systems into mine [in as small amount of room as I could. One suggestion I would make is to only use it when it is a coherent part of the conversation. I have on occation thought, "Damn, Inferno's signature is long," but when he has a question about something, this gives everything upfront. however, when it is a one sentence reply to something, the long .sig forces me [ow, ow, ow, my sore surfing/gaming wrist ] to scroll, with nothing added to the topic. Now, just for fun, my bigASS.sig, -bZj ------------------ Code: =====ThugBox===== =====GimpBox=====Home built system: Just for fun:Soyo SY-7VCA Mainboard AST Bravo LC 4/66d[VIA ApolloPro 133A T82C694X] Intel 486/66MHz CPU[onboard sound] 40MB RAM [2x16, 2x4]PIII 500E [flip chip] 500MB Conner HddPNY 128MB PC100 RAM 3 1/2, 5 1/4, 2x CDROMOEM 128MB PC133 RAM 3com Etherlink II [Ext.Transcvr]Stealth III S540 Video Windows 95 [v4.00.1111]LinkSys NC100v2 Ethernet pcAnywhere 9.2Adaptec AHA-1535A SCSI [so I can leave it in the closet]Quantum Fireball 10.3GB Hdd 2 DEC SCSI Hdds [~3.5GB total] NEC 3x SCSI CDROM [Ext.w/Caddy] HP A4331D 20" Monitor Logitec MouseMan [Compaq] ^in about 12 peices on my floor^Win2K Pro [v5.00.2195, SP-1] [Will be installing Linux][format => clean install] Norton AntiVirus 2000 Covad 768kbps sDSL w/3com switch & Flowpoint Router [sharedx6] [This message has been edited by Down8 (edited 06 September 2000).]

I have yet to run across a game that didn't run in Win2K. I even just installed Carmageddon 2. Gotta love that "Bonus for artistic impression". Hell, the only program I can't get working is fricking Eudora. -bZj

How do I get windows explorer to ???????
Down8 replied to falcon26's topic in Customization & Tweaking
In the shortcut properties, you need to set the "Target:" to: %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,c:\ -bZj PS: you can change c:\ to any path, of course. -
I had a seriously slow network connection [but my Internet times were fine] with my old 3com Etherlink III, but when I changed to my new Linksys card, everything was great. Now, I only have TCP/IP installed, and I can see everyone on my network [could see only 2 people before]. I believe enabling Win2K's indexing service might help you as well. This should index the network, as well as your computer's files. -bZj ------------------ Code: =====ThugBox===== =====GimpBox=====Home built system: Just for fun:Soyo SY-7VCA Mainboard AST Bravo LC 4/66d[VIA ApolloPro 133A T82C694X] Intel 486/66MHz CPU[onboard sound] 40MB RAM [2x16, 2x4]PIII 500E [flip chip] 500MB Conner HddPNY 128MB PC100 RAM 3 1/2, 5 1/4, 2x CDROMOEM 128MB PC133 RAM 3com Etherlink II [Ext.Transcvr]Stealth III S540 Video Windows 95 [v4.00.1111]LinkSys NC100v2 Ethernet pcAnywhere 9.2Adaptec AHA-1535A SCSI [so I can leave it in the closet]Quantum Fireball 10.3GB Hdd 2 DEC SCSI Hdds [~3.5GB total] NEC 3x SCSI CDROM [Ext.w/Caddy] HP A4331D 20" Monitor Logitec MouseMan [Compaq] ^in about 12 peices on my floor^Win2K Pro [v5.00.2195, SP-1] [Will be installing Linux][format => clean install] Norton AntiVirus 2000 Covad 768kbps sDSL w/3com switch & Flowpoint Router [sharedx6] [This message has been edited by Down8 (edited 05 September 2000).]

It's not much to add, but all of the phones [technically, they are $800 voice/data terminals, go figure ] on my campus [uSC in LA] connect with RJ-45, so it's not just for LANs, but also internal PBXs. -bZj

Since this came up, does anyone know of some hotswap bays for SCSI hdds [50pin, both 1/2" and 1"]? I have an external box for 2 of them, and 2 of them internal, but I would prefer to just swap out all of them through the external box, to clear up some room inside my case. -bZj

Win2000 advises to set PnP Aware OS to no. It doesn't make any sense to me either, but that's what MS suggests. -bZj

Onboard stuff usually needs to have some software/drivers [should come with your motherboard] to be recognized in Windows. If you can get it recognized that way, then you should be able to select the dual monitor setting. -bZj

I have just gotten my final pay check from my summer job, so I have an extra $150-200 burning a hole in my pocket. I was thinking of dropping it into my machine, as getting a new computer was the reason I was working over the summer. My specs are below. Any suggestions on the best upgrades for my wee bit o' cash? I was thinking another 128MB RAM, and a new SCSI card. Or, a CD-RW. -bZj ------------------ - brian@infinitejones.com Code: =====ThugBox===== =====GimpBox=====Home built system: Just for fun:Soyo SY-7VCA AST Bravo LC 4/66d[VIA T82C694X] Intel 486/66MHz CPU[onboard sound] 40MB RAM [2x16, 2x4]PIII 500E [flip chip] 500 MB Conner HddPNY 128MB PC100 RAM 3 1/2, 5 1/4, 2x CDROMStealth III S540 3com Etherlink IILinkSys NC100v2 Ethernet Windows 95 [v4.00.1111]Adaptec AHA-1532 SCSI [will be installing StormLinux]Quantum Fireball 10.3GB Hdd pcAnywhere 9.24 SCSI Hdd [~5 GB total] [so I can leave it in the closet]HP A4331D 20" MonitorWin2K Pro [v5.00.2195, SP-1] ^in about 12 peices on my floor^[format => clean install] Norton AntiVirus 2000 Covad 768kbps sDSL [shared]

This may be a stupid question, but did you try pressing Alt+Enter? If this doesn't work, I think there are settings within UT that can fix that. -bZj
