This isn't exactly a tech story, but it's funny, none the less: Quote: ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Subject: Re: Exceed for Win9x and WinNT Hi xxxxx, I am not familiar with Win9x. I think you would be better off [for the money] going with a PIII 733. After that speed, they jump in price. It has the 133MHz FSB. My friend got one for about $260, from egghead.com, I think. -bZj

I was wondering if anyone has a motherboard with the new PhoenixNet/Award BIOS? I had Win98 [before I did a full switch to Win2K], and it put all kinds of stuff [internet shortcuts] on my desktop and ran in my system tray [2 things I can't stand, call me crazy], and all it did was link to a page that allowed me to d/l free programs that anyone who's been on the net for more than a week already has [RealPlayer and Acrobat Reader]. I like the new startup screen it gives before booting an OS though [except that it takes 2 buttons to get into the BIOS now]. Well, I was just wondering if anyone else had it. [edit] http://www.phoenixnet.com I noticed that none of thier auto-update stuff runs on NT. Does anyone know if this is a good card? I have a chance to get one really cheap, and MS says it is Win2k compatible. That DOS joke will never die... and never get old... I love it! I so wish I had my old 386 that booted DOS from a 5 1/4. I don't know exactly what I would do with it, but I wish I had it . -bZj

I have been using software rendering, and it still looks sweet, and never locks up. DOS, have you heard anything specific about P3s and via? Cuz I run it, and it's great. [edit] Woo Hoo! My friend had s imilar problem, in Win98 [before he went ME]. His system would ramdomly reboot during games. It turns out that this was related to his system monitoring utliities. It came with his mobo, and was set to reboot the system if it started to over heat, so 3D games would reach near the limit, and... boom, reboot. The stranger thing is that his system log would show a heat spike that went from ~45C to ~70C in less than a second, which is basically impossible. Well, he did not install it when he installed ME, but that was yesterday, so we'll see... -bZj

I guess you need an idea of what I'm talking about. So, here's a motherboard review. -bZj

I would suggest going TCP/IP only, but that's because it works fine for my house, which runs ~10 computers through a DSL router wiht only TCP/IP installed [mostly]. I have strange problems with networking though. I can see myself always, but people on the network showup and disappear randomly. I thought it was fixed the other day, but today I can only see myself and one other computer. I was also wondering why you chose the IPs the way you did. I was told that, for a home network, it was best to have 10.10.10.xxx IPs with a subnet of 255.0.0.0 or 255.255.0.0 [this is usually set by Windows when entering the above IPs]. -bZj
-
Probably a dumb question, but did you open the box and check to be sure the cables are all connected securely? -bZj
-
Is this able to be used as a simple LAN card? I.e. to hook into a DSL network that is already up and running through a router? Also, I'm guessing it's external? -bZj

I have noticed recently, that if I click on a link to something that is auto downloaded in IE 5.5, that it will auto-close the current window. This is extremely annoying when I lose my history, and have to find my way back to where I was. It doesn't happen if I right-click and d/l files. I'm not sure if this is related to IE 5.5, or Win2K, or something else, as I installed Win2K, and immediately upgraded to IE 5.5, and have installed all kinds of stuff since. It does suck! I also still have the scroll problem, where when I use my middle button to scroll down/up, it will continue to scroll for a looong time, even after I release the button, it sucks when I am scrolling along reading a story or such. I still don't understand why when someone asks, "ME or 2K, and why", people respond with, "if you want to play games, go with ME". I have yet to find anything (as far as games go) that doesn't run on 2K. I play Quake3 for a while, close it, open up Unreal Tourney for a bit, and when I'm tired of that, I drop in some DiabloII, just for kicks. I had no problems installing/configuring 2K, and my friend has been trying to install ME fo the past 2 hours! And, it doesn't want to work. He getting BSODs left and right. I, personally, don't know why he doesn't go to 2K [except that he loses his $100 Kensington trackball ], but he thinks the same way, "I wanna play games; I should install Win9x". This is, of course, just my pennies, as I sit and pound vodka daquaris on a Saturday night . Here's something [some of] you should get a kick out of: Quote: ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Subject: Re: Exceed for Win9x and WinNT Hi xxxxxxx, I am not familiar with Win9x. I don't have an Asus, but I have the new VIA 133A chipset, and I have been completely pleased with the performance of the 4 in 1 drivers on my board. although, I still haven't been able to get Eudora to work... Is setting up swappable drives an option? The cases are only $10-20 each, and a new HD would only run $100 for 10+GB, the downside being that you lose a 5 1/4 drive. Not that I could afford even that right now -bZj

Cheese nagual- I wasn't trying to contradict you, just explain more for people who hadn't heard of VMWare. Just because my reply was under yours, doesn't mean I was directing all my comments at you. I was just adding to the conversation. I also didn't say that stability wasn't important for the home user, just that the majority of BSODs are easily traced and fixed, and are not a huge price to pay for ultimate compatibility. I've had similar problems. I live in a fraternity house, and our network *should* only use TCP/IP, but I couldn't see any one with only this installed. At one point [after installing NetBUEI and IPX], I was able to see all but one other computer, then, I changed the name of my personal file server [see below], it gets the error: "Net work not accessible", and my Win2K box can only see my self and one other computer on the network. I can search for other computers, and find them, and I can pcAnywhere into my fileserver, but I only see myself and the other guy. And, the others can see me just fine. Any ideas? I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling IPX and NetBUEI, but no change. [edit] I should mention that one other person in the house is running Win2K [server], all others are on Win98se [or should be], I think. I was having a similar problem win I first installed Win2K. I resolved it by formatting, reinstalling and not installing the extra mother board drivers [except for the sound drivers]. Trying to install Office 2000 Premium under Win2000 professi
Down8 replied to Joe2000's topic in Software
I had no problems with installing Office 2K Prem., but now that I have it installed, IE 5.5 asks for that CD when ever I go to an international site and need a new language pack, instead of downloading it from MS, which really sucks, with DSL, it's faster to d/l it than for me to go get the CD and let it install from there. I did find out how to fix this though. Office defaults to that, instead, I had it install all of the language packs, which wastes space, but saves time later on. Whatever. -bZj ------------------ - brian@infinitejones.com Code: ================== ===================Home built system: Also, just for fun:Soyo SY-7VCA AST Bravo LC 4/66d[VIA T82C694X] Intel 486/66MHz CPU[onboard sound] 40MB RAM [2x16, 2x4]PIII 500E [flip chip] 500 MB Conner HddPNY 128MB PC100 RAM 3 1/2, 5 1/4, 2x CDStealth III S540 3com Etherlink II3com Etherlink III Adaptec AHA-1545 SCSIQuantum Fireball 10.3GB Hdd [to host some files on:]HP A4331D 20" Monitor 1.3GB internal SeagateWin2K Pro [v5.00.2195, SP-1] 2 2GB external Seagates[format => clean install] Windows 95 [v4.00.1111]Norton AntiVirus 2000 pcAnywhere 9.2Covad 768kbps sDSL [shared] [so I can leave it in the closet] -
I wouldn't say Corel "ported" or "recently" put its programs in the Linux arena, as Corel has had their own version of Linux for a while now [one of the better ones, along with SuSE]. I also wouldn't say that Linux "will be" or "is" the next big thing, as it serves its own purpose [i.e. Internet servers and fun for people with a programming background (techies that can write their own drivers if they need to)]. It is growing stronger each day, but that is due mostly to MS Backlash® . Linux is still not ready for the simple home user [i.e. your mom], if only because it doesn't support most of the home user appliances [hell, they just got DVDs to work, and have very recently come under fire for doing so]. Stability is one of Linux's main selling points, but most home users [MS's bread and butter] don't leave their computers on for 3 months at a time, they turn them off at night, and back on when they need them during the day. The other selling point being security, but, once again, how likely is it that a home user will get hacked? especially when most people still dial-up and get a new IP, and turn off thier computers at night. And, if Linux does get used more, it will have hackers exploit its weaknesses more. I see Linux's future as a server and firewall box, as far as the home user is concerned. Self contained, embedded in a little box just this side of your new xDSL/Cable connection. Gosh, this kinda turned into an essay, didn't it? I swear, every time I write a really long post, NT Comp's servers go down... My pennies, -bZj PS: VMWare isn't exactly an emulator, it lets you run virtual machines, so you can split your processor [and memory, etc.], and actually run multiple operating systems at once. I haven't yet tried it, but it looks promissing, if not just plain fun [if you got the room and the urge to play]. ------------------ - brian@infinitejones.com Code: ================== ===================Home built system: Also, just for fun:Soyo SY-7VCA AST Bravo LC 4/66d[VIA T82C694X] Intel 486/66MHz CPU[onboard sound] 40MB RAM [2x16, 2x4]PIII 500E [flip chip] 500 MB Conner HddPNY 128MB PC100 RAM 3 1/2, 5 1/4, 2x CDStealth III S540 3com Etherlink II3com Etherlink III Adaptec AHA-1545 SCSIQuantum Fireball 10.3GB Hdd [to host some files on:]HP A4331D 20" Monitor 1.3GB internal SeagateWin2K Pro [v5.00.2195, SP-1] 2 2GB external Seagates[format => clean install] Windows 95 [v4.00.1111]Norton AntiVirus 2000 pcAnywhere 9.2Covad 768kbps sDSL [shared] [so I can leave it in the closet]

OK, this is the second time this has happened. I start using IE, and when a page starts to load, I get an error that: "\Documents and Settings\My Name\Desktop is inaccessible" I then go see if my desktop is gone, and sure enough, it is. I don't keep anything on my desktop [except the default: My Computer, Network Neighborhood, My Documents, and the Recycle Bin]. I then create a folder called Desktop, and everything is fine for about 2 days, then it happens again this morning. Has anyone had a similar problem, or have any idea what might cause this? It's really annoying. I wouldn't be surprised if I was getting hacked [as my roommate was running a 1 gig warez server and didn't know], but I don't think that is the case.
