windows 2000 SP2 & Object Desktop winXP better than winX
Down8 replied to cipher's topic in Hardware
I can only presume he means SP2beta. As for Object Desktop: http://www.stardock.com/ It's not free, BTW. -bZj -
http://www.labtec.com/noflash/gear/mice.cfm Sorry, it was Lactec, not Logitech that has gotten ahold of the Razors. This site just links back to the Razor site, but someone over at the [H] got a replacement Boomslang2K that said Labtec all over it, so the deal seems to be in the works. -bZj

I've had an IntelliMouse Explorer for a month or so now, and I really like it, better than any of the Logitech mice - I hate that shape, it slides out of my hand. I did hear that Razor has been bought by Logitech though, so you're not necessarily *** -out on your Boomslang2K. -bZj

You're going to need to plug it into the PSU to get the speed you want, the mobo doesn't offer enough power out of the fan header. Just hook one of your case fans into the CPU fan header. I believe there is also something that would help you over at www.nerdsbyte.com - a switch that plugs into both. -bZj

Last time I looked at the GeForce FAQ, it said to set your aperture size to half of your physical RAM. I have 256MB of RAM, so it's set at 128MB aperture. I've seen many people who say that they see no difference between 64MB and 128MB or 256MB, so there is opposition to the 1/2-theory. I think it's www.geforcefaq.com or www.geforcefaq.org -bZj

Well, I was just gonna say that most people in this forum already have WinXP, and most are official beta testers, and don't really need to see screen shots of something they are running. But, then I saw this nice little bit of, shall we say, suspiciousness.... Might want to hide the desktop icons, when posting screenshots like this, especially when you're fronting the review. Otherwaise, thanks for the cool screenshots! -bZj

I just drop in the CD, and don't even have to put in a serial number to install it. this is not the case with my copy of Win2K Pro though. This will not be anything new. -bZj

Bursar,I don't think you can delete files from a simple CD-R, but only CD-RWs. -bZj

Well, you've found one: www.NTCompatible.com Go ahead and read through the FAQs from the front page, and most people will help you here in the forums. Of course, I try to check the Win2K help files before looking elsewhere - that saves me from asking the sill questions. -bZj

I think the EULA allows for multiple installs right now b/c it is a beta, and they want you to test it on as many machines as possible. Here's a question: If I pay the $20 and get Beta 2, which has a 180 limit on it, could I install it on my machine, then change a peice of hardware in 179 days [thus giving it a new machine ID according to MS], and reinstall it, and still be well within the law? This of course would be on both of my computers, besides, I reinstall Windows about every 3 months or so anyway [b/c that's the only way to keep it 'clean']. I think I may just pay the $20... unless that's what the contacted me about beta testing, which would mean I get it for free. -bZj

Have you applied any of the compatibility updates from http://WindowsUpdate.Microsoft.com ? Those may help solve your problems. -bZj

Of course, it can't be garanteed that your problems will stop with better power, but it is a good place to start, considering your many devices. Did these problems only show up when you added a new piece of hardware, or was there any other instigator of the problem? Enermax is a good PSU maker, as is Sparkle, so look into those. -bZj

Has anyone been able to get this scanner to work rightr in Win2K? The install app closes itself with the 'OS not supported" error, and a manual install gives nothing but a process that pulls 100% processor usage and a little movement from the scanner. Picked it up for $50 today, and would like to not have to return it or house it until I build a WinME-based system. Anyone got work-around ideas? -bZj

I haven't tried ApCompat yet - OK, just tried it: "MSVCRT.DLL is not compatible with Win32. Click OK to terminate application." On HP's web-page, they say that Win2K isn't "supported right now" for this scanner, but in the hpgtrsti.inf file I found this: Quote: ;-------------------------------------- ; Scanner Info Section -- win2000 section ;-------------------------------------- [sJ2100C.Scanner.NT] DriverVer=08/01/2000,1.00.0000.1 Include=sti.inf Needs=STI.USBSection SubClass=StillImage DeviceType=1 DeviceSubType=0x1 Capabilities=1 AddReg=SJ2100C.AddReg.NT CopyFiles=SJ2100C.CopyFiles DelFiles=SJ2100C.DelSysFiles DeviceData=SJ2100C.DeviceData UninstallSection=Uninstall.Usb.Scanner.NT ICMProfiles="sRGB Color Space Profile.icm" VendorSetup="hpsjvset,InstallScanJetSoftware 2100C" So, there is something there. Win2K recognized the scanner in the device manager, and the software installed [manually]. I looked, and there aren't any Win2K or Win9x directories on the CD, just different language directories, and some extra apps from Adobe, et al. This sucks. I think I'll be returning it tomorrow. We'll see. -bZj

I'm almost certain that the KT7A has made a bit more room for larger HSFs, but do more research to verify this - you could always get a Mini-SuperOrb and be safe, or the current OC champ, the Iwill KK66 board [available in RAID: KK266-R], or the 8KTA3 from EPoX, which was well received [also RAID in the 8KTA3+]. I would get the KT7A [re: am getting in a month or so], if just b/c they are more likely to have newer drivers for it [being the newer product]. You don't really do justice to an AMD CPU if you don't OC it a bit [or a ton], so you'll want the 133 bus. Also, when you do get above the 115MHz mark, the clock divider changes [to 1/4 I believe], so you won't necesarily be goin to thet 39MHz PCI clcock as suggested [i'm running at 150MHz, so I would be dead if that was true - 50MHz PCI clock = whew!]. Althoug, if you already have PC100 memory, and you don't want/need to overclock, then the KT7 should suit you fine [minus the large HSF, which you won't really need if you're not OCing]. -bZj
