Hey, I've just installed Win2kPro - and loving it already I have three questions however and please bear in mind that this is my first venture into the NT world..... 1) On Win98SE I had a BIOS update for my videocard that needed to load in the Autoexec.bat file. On the SiS site there is no mention as to whether this is cool with 2000 or not - but my question is can I still load this at boot as I've heard of problems with calling things in DOS ???? 2) Does TweakUI have to load at boot to keep the tweaks I've made ????? 3) I installed Win2kPro as a clean install but I'm dual-booting Win98SE (if that makes sense). I want to remove 98SE because I'm happier with Win2k than I thought I would be. Is this possible ?????????? Thanks for any help, MiShY [This message has been edited by MiShY (edited 05 August 2000).]

Hey, I am using ZA Pro - on a LAN. 2xComputers - 1xWin2kPro(Server) 1xWin98SE(Client) Using WinRoute for ICS. I also occasionally setup an Unreal dedicated server off my comp. ....and I use IE for www What I want to know is how best to config. the ports. Which to give access to and so forth. Are there any sites that anyone knows of that will give a decent explanation of which browser - and general software - needs what ports ???????????? Is ZA Pro secure enough with just both Local and Internet sliders up full ????????????? Thanks, MiShY

Hey, I'm setting up an Unreal 1 server on my computer and want to configure ZoneAlarm Pro to only use the ports Unreal uses.... Can anyone please tell me which ports Unreal needs 7777 etc. ?????????? ..and also I could do with some help as to configuring the ports themselves in ZA Pro if possible.... Thanks a lot, MiShY

Hey, I am totally new to Win2kPro and was wondering if it's possible to run Quake 1 on it ???? I've just got a new video card and wanted to check out GLQuake. Possible yay or nay ???? Thanks, MiShY
-
Hey, Yeah my doubt was with what I vaguely remembered being a DOS installer. But I've got it working just cool now thanks with GlQuake, and I'm about to try out that unofficial GLQuake - that sounds so cool Thanks, MiShY

Hey, I'm totally new to the world of Win2kPro and I've just set up my first network. From win2kpro to win98se. I am sharing my c:\ partition with 98se but I would like to password protect it. I know right click on the drive click sharing then permissions. All well and good. But I set someone from my Win98SE log in group a read-only level but they could still delete files. That being the case I suppose what I have to do is edit the Security tab. By removing the "Everybody" login upon reboot you get a page file error because Windows can't access it. So how can I password this drive ???????? Does anyone know any good security tips for Windows itself ????? Client connects on proxy. BlackICE installed. Thanks, MiShY

Hey, I'm using BlackICE now because ZoneAlarm hadn't at the time of my installing the network had any protection for NAT networking. I'm using WinRoute Pro - hence the NAT - to share my internet connection. Protocols being used to link the computers - TCP/IP and NetBEUI (I also share one drive from each computer). I ran Steve Gibsons "Probe My Ports" test and most of the scanned ports were in Stealth Mode. However, these ports were "Closed". Which I know does not give someone access like an "Open" port. But like the site said it might invite a persistant hacker to at least try to scan me again at a later date. Unlike a port in "Stealth Mode" obviously. These ports were "Closed" :::: Https IDENT My question is ... Is there anyway to close these ports further using BlackICE, or WinRoute, or perhaps Windows itself ????? My Network :::: 1xWin98SE (Client) 1xWin2k (Pro) WinRoute ICS NetBEUI, TCP/IP, File&Print Sharing Passworded drives Passworded Access to Win2k machine through User designation. Disabled Guest Account Also, do you know of any good sites dealing with Win2k security specifically ???????? Thanks, MiShY
-
Hey, I've managed to sort this one out.... I have removed the NetBIOS I was using by making my LAN use the TCP/IP protocol, and I've also tightened up the security against spoofing etc. on WinRoute. I did the "Probe My Ports" test again and I passed with flying colours. ie/. ALL Stealth !! Yippeeeeeee !!!!! MiShY

I want to create a LMHosts file but don't know how to do it :::: My IPs 192.168.0.1 A 192.168.0.2 B Is that it ????? Also for A and B which I presume to be the names of the 2 computers do I have to put their location ???? Thanks, MiShY

Hey, I've downloaded and registered the Pro version (aint no different to the home version except a few extras) and am trying to set up Internet Connection Sharing between both this computer (Win2kPro) and my other comp (Win98SE). I have followed the instructions to a "T" and can ping both computers IP addresses. BUT whenever I go to install the Client half of Wingate it can never detect the Wingate Server on the other computer. I am running the server on Win2k - the client on Win98SE. Please HELP I've been doing this for the last 3 hours lol Thanks, MiShY - Had it working once in 3 hours before it conked out (

WOOOHOOO some success at last !!!! My client has now managed to realise that I have a Wingate client on my network. Ok, so here's the bad news lol When I open IE the client connects to the server but won't go to any websites whatsoever. It's like it's aimlessly looking for something it isn't going to find. Any ideas ?????????? MiShY

Hey, OK I've got both computers pinging each other ok. Problem now is is that Wingate Client won't detect ANY Wingate servers on the network I'm using version 4.01 Pro. Can anyone please help ??????????? Thanks, MiShY
-
Hey, Thanks for your replies. Until I can get both computers to be able to ping each other I can't use either of your suggestions unfortunately. It does all sting at the back of my throat that after I've bought Wingate it might not be as good as suggested Anyway, any help on my ping problem would be greatly appreciated MiShY

Hey, I have just installed Win2kPro for the first time and I just read a security article - as follows - and I was wondering if someone could please detail to me how to implement this on my system. Like I said I am new to 2000 and infact all NT variants so if you can help please explain in total laymans terms so I can understand The article is as follows :::: "Rename Administrator Unlike other Accounts, the Administrator ID cannot be locked out. This means that people can try as many times as they like to crack this ID. To make this more difficult, rename your administrative account to something else. Make it very easy to remember, like "RealAdmin" or something similar. Next, I would recommend making a dummy Administrator account that has NO rights to anything, and giving it a log in script that writes the client machine's host name and IP address to a file whenever someone is able to log in using it, and then kicks the user off. To add a login script to the dummy administrators account, go to Console1 and the properties of the dummy account. Change it in the "Login Scripts" entry. A login script, in the most simple terms, is just a batch file that a user runs when they login. This can be as simple as connecting a few network drives to as complex as, well, let it suffice to say it can get really complex. If you want to make a login script that puts the IP address info of the person logging into your machine into a log file, you would use something like this. Let's name the file Login.CMD, and let's create it in notepad just like any other text file. Note that each new line below is prefaced with a bullet point, just so you can see where new lines begin in case the HTML formatting doesn't come out right): rem Make it so the person logging in doesnt see the script run @echo off Rem get the ipaddress of the local machine (along with some other settings, you can write another script to parse out just the ip address, but if they are NAT'ed or PAT'ed then the whole thing is a lot more useful) ipconfig >> \\<YourServer>\<SecureShare>\ipaddr.log rem Exit the command shell Exit" Thankyou for any help you may be able to offer me, MiShY
