Diamond SupraMax 56k Ext USB Modem drivers for Win2k

Sorry you guys. I should have paid more attention to your countries. Didn't realize you were dealing with European modems. My solution did work for North American USB Supra's, but that isn't any good you.

Diamond SupraMax 56k Ext USB Modem drivers for Win2k

RenZor I have bad news for you. Those POS drivers from S3 never worked for my Supra USB either. Same thing, one file missing and it never gives you a chance to look for it. Now you are also screwed to install an actual working file for the modem. I will give you the place to find it, or I can email it to you (its only 19kb). In order to install a driver for that modem you have to unplug it and plug it back it, then windows detects the device and you should be able to point it at a modem .inf file and everything will work no problem. Because that f'ing S3 driver started to install but didn't finish, everytime you try to install a new driver for it, it will default back to installing the S3 driver, which of course doesn't work. I could never resolve this problem until I re-installed win2000 and reset the default modem (back to none in this case). Make sure to give a big thank you to S3 for me. Anyways, go to Zoom's website, look in support for Win2000 drivers and download the driver which I believe is called "Zusb2000" for Lucent external usb modem chipset. That driver worked very well in the Supra modem. I was able to connect at 52K and 44K to two different ISP's. Good Luck.

    Guys would this work???

Microsoft docs state that Win2kpro can be installed on a machine with a Pentium 133 processor (must assume Intel here), recommended 64 meg ram and the 2 gigs of space is plenty for the hard drive. They want a minimum of 650 mb. The only problem might be that your laptop's 166 processor is a pared down version for mobile computing and may not be compatible with Win2k. If you try and install win2k on the laptop, make sure you run the file "winnt32/checkupgradeonly" command on the cd. This will generate a compatibility report on the hardware and software on your laptop. If they pass the compat, then you should be good to go. If you just need to access some features of Active Directory on a 2000 network and the laptop isn't capable of the full install, then install the Directory Services Client for win9x. Make sure you have IE4.01 or greater and Active Desktop enabled. Then run "\clients\win9x\dsclient.exe" on the 2000 cd. Hope this helps
  4. I upgraded my wife's Dell this weekend with a new processor. I took out the older processor (P3 550 slot 1 100FSB coppermine), bought some parts and proceeded to put a new system together for our daughter, figuring I could save money on a new cpu by using the perfectly good Dell one. Everything went fine, the system posted and recognized the processor (the mb is a brand new Asus P3B-F). The only problem is that because of the passive crappy aluminum heat sink Dell uses, the cpu over heats in the new system. I have installed an intake fan at the bottom of the case and an exhaust fan at the top of the case providing excellent air-flow, but its not the same as the shroud system Dell uses. Within 5 minutes, the onboard cpu monitor on the Asus reads the cpu temperature is at 170 degrees F. I haven't changed any VCore settings and the board is set to deliver 3.3V to the system bus, (basically the default settings). This indicates to me that my problem here is I have to get that blinking POS heatsink off and I have no idea how. I checked a number of overclocking sites, Dell message boards and even called Dell tech support with no results other than (uh....I don't think you can). Basically, somebody please help!!! I don't want to buy a new processor if I can help it.

Guys need help - Damn Dell Heatsinks!!

Thanks for the help guys. I got a twin fan heatsink on the thing now. Hopefully that high temp surge didn't fubar the cpu.
  6. Yes you can. Just install the administrative tools on your Win2kpro machine and either log in as Domain admin on the client or use the "runas" feature when logged onto the domain as a non-admin user. To install the tools double click on the "Adminpak.msi" file. Either run a search for it on your computer, or look for it in C:\Winnt\system32 (C: being the drive letter for your Win2000 OS), or in the I386 folder on your Win2000 CD-ROM.

    Dual Monitors

You can select whatever resolution and color depth is available on your second monitor and graphics card, and make it the same as your primary monitor if capable of those settings. You can also select which monitor will be the primary one, ie. the one showing the start menu. Unless both monitors are the same size, you can't really make them look the same. Well not if one is a 21" and the other is a 15". You can also stack them on top of each other and set the desktop to extend vertically as well. Win2000 has the capability to extend its desktop to a maximum of 10 monitors. Anybody ever see a motherboard with more than 10 pci slots yet?

Problem with NFS: Porche after upgrade

Same old, Same old. It will still work after SP1 (I used SP1 and then ended up re-installing - what a rip). Just make sure you delete "gimme.dll" and you will also have to go to http://www.gamecopyworld.com and download the no-cd .exe for the latest game version. Then you will still need to run the EA game updater to get online, and then you have to do the above all over again to play on the servers.

    Diamond Viper 770 Ultra 32mb

I have a Viper 770 Ultra also in a win2kPro machine. It runs apps and games (open gl and d3d) very well. It does peak out at about 1280x1024x16 in some of the newest games, but what can you expect from an older chipset. I agree the best driver set for it is probably 5.30 or 5.32 reference drivers.

    Network woes...

At this point I am leaning towards the crossover cable being at fault. Each of your NIC's appears to be ok. Is the crossover home made or a retail one? Probably doesn't matter anyways. Just to be cautious, make sure the NIC's aren't on a shared isa/pci slot. That can cause problems. Double check that they aren't sharing resources with other items as well. Other than that, try to borrow an auto-sensing hub and some cat5 cables that are in good working order and see if that helps. I'll keep an eye on this post to see how you are doing. It sounds like one end of the crossover cable hasn't been terminated properly. If you switch it around on your two computers, you should see the exact reverse of your problem if that is the case. Good luck. I would hold off putting in SP1 until you have your network going first. Then you can share your drives and copy the file over instead of downloading it. My first go at submitting this post didn't take, so apologies if my reply is duplicated.

    Network woes...

Before you can worry about file and printer sharing you have to make sure both computers communicate with each other at the protocol and hardware level. You should be fine using IP on them and not worry about IPX and the client for networks. Here are a few steps to verify that: 1. at a command prompt run "ipconfig". this will display the IP address and subnet for each of your computers. if you see a subnet of 0.0.0.0 this means you have a duplicate IP address. 2. on each computer at the command prompt run "ping 127.0.0.1" this is a loopback address that will verify that tcp/ip is correctly installed on each computer. 3. at this point you should have found and documented each computers "real" ip address. now run the "ping" command with the address of your other computer to verify that you are properly communicating with it on the network. If all the above steps didn't work, you have a problem with a) either or both of your NIC cards or most likely your crossover cable. Anyways, try this out and repost your results and the members will try and get you going from there. Always work from simple to complicated when troubleshooting. Win2000 does a good job of networking. Its usually hardware that is at fault.

    Norton Antivirus 7...

Version 7 is the Corporate or Network edition. Best product they ever made. I checked view source the same way you did and the scanner never kicked in. Maybe it should. You can probably stop that by right clicking the Nav icon in the systray (looks like a little gold mouse) and click on the "Enable file system real time protection" to disable it.

    Network Question

apologies. that was supposed to be: right click on "my computer", choose "properties" then the rest.

    Network Question

Right click "my computer", choose "network identification" tab, click on "properties". you will see a choice for "domain" and "workgroup". in the "workgroup" area type in the name of the workgroup you are all using. do this with all the computers in the workgroup. then you can complete all your network shares and permissions. using server and creating a domain is more efficient and secure, but if you only have several computers on your lan you can manage with a workgroup instead. you can't have more than 10 members of a workgroup if you are only using win2k professional, and you shouldn't have more than 10 if you have win2k server because a domain is easier to manage. if you are using a proxy to connect to the internet, make sure it is a computer with windows 2000. win9.x has too many open ports. unless you want to add a firewall to one of your 9.x boxes.

Putting a password on a shared drive

You can also install some directory services on Win2K Pro. However you won't have full functionality. That is reserved for the Server versions. Get yourself an evaluation version (or full) of Server or Advanced Server. Then you will have full user policy control over everything including their desktop. If you really want to learn about Win2k, that is the way to do it. All you need is a 2 gig partition on your computer and install the Server there. Then you will be able to boot to either Pro or Server to play with both. Have fun with it :-)

    CDR Burning ...

Hmmm. You didn't say what writer you are using. If you have SCSI you will need to update your ASPI for the Adaptec for sure. The other problem you may be having is that Nero does not like to co-exist with Adaptec Easy CD Creator. Having both on your system may be disabling both and any other writing prog you have. I have Plextor burners with updated ASPI and firmware and run both Adaptec, Clone CD, and CDRWIN on my network without any problems. I can access and use the burners from any workstation as well. I also use Generic blue 80 min, TDK 74, Sony 74, Kodak 74 and Maxell 74 without burning coasters, with and without moderate overburns. Try installing only the Adaptec software first (or the prog you use the most), make sure you have the latest firmware for your writer, and try to make a simple audio cd. If that works, install some other writing prog (other than Nero) and test it. Eventually you should be able to determine which prog is causing you problems and if you can't live without that prog, then try different versions until you get one that works.
  19. I have a month old install of win2k. Couple of things got fubar and I could use some advice on how to reset them. 1.When opening windows explorer, it used to show all my drive letters in my computer first and then show my documents as an unopened folder. Now when I open explorer it shows my computer unopened, and my documents as an open folder. 2. I can't get Outlook Express back as the default mail client. I installed MS Office 97 and accidentally installed Outlook with it. (I was sure I had unchecked it prior to install). I uninstalled Outlook, and then installed IE5.5 hoping it would reset Outlook Express as the default but no luck. I can run OE manually, but I can't click on any "mailto:" link on a web page without crashing the browser. Any help with these little problems would be greatly appreciated.

Need help to reset some defaults without re-install

That is usually the right way to fix that, but it won't work in this case. In the drop down list there is nothing to select for a mail client. I also clicked on the "Reset Defaults" button, but that didn't work either. I had installed Pegasus mail, and it is now available to select, but I don't like Pegasus mail. I know there must be a registry key to modify, but I don't want to waste my "two" support incidents on something as trivial as this.

    Wingate - Do I feel dumb or what !! - Help !!!

Mishy, don't use ICS. Its a total pain, and messes up your comps. The easiest way to share internet between your two computers is to use WinProxy. It is easily configured. Actually when you install it, it tells you which addresses to assign your NIC cards and the subnet. Just make sure all your computers can see each other on the network. Peer to Peer IP is the easiest. Then install WinProxy on the computer with the internet connection, and carefully read the text info it generates. MOST importantly before doing any of this is to uninstall ICS before anything.
