hey.. a friend of mine is unable to run his xp system. a few days ago he booted his computer and xp didn't load. he got a message that the file SOFTWARE is corrupted. he didn't install any new hardware or software and the xp ran just fine the day before. safe mode won't load and using "last known config" didn't help either... is there something he can do ?? is the xp that fragile ? (i thought there was suppose to be a backup of the backup of the backup in xp...) thanks in advance !!
-
thanks for your input....but i believe he will reinstall the xp.
-
true...he could do step one... but he would lose all his software ,so he would better reinstall xp..don't you think ?
-
according to that article....if system restore was disabled before the crash then there is nothing he can do.the backups are in the "snapshot" folder in the system restore folder, hence no system restore..no backups..
-
repair the reg ?....how ???
-
system restore was disabled on his computer.....is he doomed ?
-
he says the repair option just sends his to the command prompt.. isn't there a more recent backup of the software file ?
-
no he is not overclocking. where are all the backups??????

hey.... i saw this a few days ago : "L2 Cache size Windows XP can't detect the proper amount of L2 cache on your CPU. you'll want to go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\ and change the SecondLevelDataCache key to the L2 cache size of your CPU (in Kb). I've received a few questions about this one and I thought I'd clarify it. when you select to modify this file the default entry is in hexadecimal simply change the selection to decimal and THEN enter your number. Such as 256, 512. A value of 100 in Hexadecimal will result in 256Kb being shown since that is what it's decimal number is." this value in my registry is 0. should i change it ? thanks !!
-
hey clutch , ..according to the microsoft article : "If the value of this entry is 0, the system attempts to retrieve the L2 cache size from the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) for the platform. If it fails, it uses a default L2 cache size of 256 KB. If the value of this entry is not 0, it uses this value as the L2 cache size." so why shouldn't i set it to 512,just in case ?

i do have a pentium 4 1.6a with 512kb level 2 cache. i should change the registry to 200h ? question: how come you said 256d = 0h...?? shouln't it be 100h ??

in order to copy a cd using clone cd or some other program, should the source disk be read by the cd-rom or the cd-writer ?? is there a difference ? 8)
-
hey.. i currently have a voodoo 3 3000 and a pentium III 450 mhz and much to my surprise ,most games run just fine - jedi knight II ,Return to Castle Wolfenstein.(almost unnoticeable stutter). please understand me..i like to play games but i'm not a fanatic who wants 500 fps or something like that ..i just wanna be able to play. i plan to move to a Pentium 4 1.6 Ghz in a few days, will the geforce 2 mx do the job for me ?? will i be able to play opengl/D3D games with reasonable 3D performance and quality ?? (maybe even good performance ????) Thanks In Advance !!! ;(
-
guys....how can i tell the fps while playing a game ?... and what about the refresh rate problem ? is there an official fix ?
-
yes....but dao raw is a writing mode (so i understood). i wanna copy a cd not on the fly.will the cd-rom and the cd-writer produce the same image file ??

NTGAMEMAN...I GOT MINE FROM VISIONTEK TOO !!! but they say that their driver is an exact copy of nvidia's driver ...that's why i installed the driver from nvidia's site.
-
no ..i checked the DirectX diagnostic refresh rate and it is on default. as for the drivers....they are copy paste from nvidia.
-
...the manufacturer itself says on its web site that there is no difference between its drivers and nvidia's....!! where can i get hold of the Nvidia Refresh Rate Fix Utility ?? The Main (and old) Problem : Windows XP Professional Desktop Screen relosution - 1024x768 32bit 85Hz Direct3D games Default to 75 Hz OpenGl Games Default to 60 Hz... Help anyone ?....
-
Crunchmeister....that was my thought exactly.... i now upgraded to pentium 4 1.6a and i did by the geforce 2 mx : NVIDIA GeForce2 MX400 GPU • AGP BUS or PCI • 64MB • 200MHz Core Clock • 166MHz Memory Clock • 350MHz RAMDAC • API Support for DirectX®, OpenGL ICD® for Windows • VGA Connector and TV/S-video Out* Features • 256-bit 3D and 2D graphics accelerator • NVIDIA Shading Rasterizer™ • Integrated Second Generation Transform and Lighting Engines • 4 Texels per clock • 32-bit color with 32-bit z/stencil • Cube environment mapping • DirectX and S3 texture compression • High Definition Video Processor (HDVP) • AGP 4X i'm quite happy with it and as you said ..it is rather temporary until i have enough money to upgrade it... QUESTION : jedi knight II defaults to 60 hz ..... any solution ??
-
hey.... could someone please shed some light on the pentium 4 series ?? the 1.6 ghz and above come in several flavours : 423/478 pin , 0.13/0.18 micron and with 256/512 cache... what is the difference ?is it that important to the home user ?? (Games\divx) and how come one motherboard, the intel 850 support them all ??(does it really ??) thanks !!
