  1. Hi everyone, This is my third day on Linux, attempting to install VMware on Mandrake 9. I've run into this problem (I think this is the problem.): when running vmware-config.pl, it asks for the source code for the currently running kernel, so it can recompile the vm module to run with the kernel. The problem seems to be that the Mandrake kernel is labeled 2.4.19-16mdk, and all the source code I find is only 2.4.19, which vmware rejects as different. I can't find the source code for 2.4.19-16mdk anywhere (kernel.org does not have listing for this version) ....there is an rpm available that seems like it should work: http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/mandrake/9.0/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/kernel-source-2.4.19-16mdk.i586.html but after installing this RPM, it seems to just be modules, and not not C header files, like vmware seems to want. This is driving me crazy--I'd really appreciate someone's help. Sorry if I said anything really stupid here, or I'm overlooking the obvious. best regards, wozzeck

    CUSL2 supports Hibernate?

Hello guys-- I just bought a Cusl2-c Mobo...and I don't have a Hibernation tab either. Device Manager lists my PC as an ACPI. When I shut down Win2000, my computer screen just freezes after displaying "Saving your settings". Any idea what may be wrong? What could cause an ACPI mobo and an ACPI OS not to work together? How I can I enable hibernation or standby, or at least have Win2K automatically power off the computer? Thanks for any advice. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- PIII 800EB (fsb133) Asus CUSL2-C mobo (w 1/3/01 INF updates) 256 Meg Ram (PC133) Creative Soundblaster Live! hahaha s.hitey windows2000 - no more slow games 4 me

Of course everyone here that reads these posts realizes that DavidNewbould is just pushing everyone's buttons. If everyone would just ignore ignorant posts like this, they would happen less and less often. DavidNewbould, you should flame Whistler. JDULMAGE will love to talk to you about that, and he can try to show you how whistler is better, maybe the two of you will fight and flame forever and create a cyber-warp thing that will suck you both in and make you go away like I wish all bad people would do. There are some serious people who view this site and all these "win2000 sucks" posts just make the writer look like an a$$. This is America, you can suck if you want to. BUT NOT HERE. Well, anyway, I know that this is really none of my business, so now you all can flame me too. PS Win2000 kicks ass! Computer Restarts Itself - hardware issue??

Could you try removing all your PCI cards (except the GeForce) and see if your system goes down. Then put them back in one by one. This process is no fun, but it might reveal your issue. I found that if I removed my Creative Live! card, that my comp would be more stable. That's when I knew I had to switch Mobos. Hope this helps. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- PIII 733 (fsb133) OC-->770 Asus P3B-F mobo 256 Meg Ram Creative Soundblaster Live! Computer Restarts Itself - hardware issue??

WhenI saw the title of the post I thought...I bet this guy has a GeForce, and I was right. I was having similar trouble to what you describe, the strange restarts. I was running only win2k, so I don't know if it would have done it with win98. I thought it was a power issue since the Geforce is so hungry, but now I'm sure it was a problem with my cheesy MOBO, a Iwill Super7. I eventually got pissed off enough and bought a new Mobo and CPU, and that took care of it. What kind of Mobo do you have? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- PIII 733 (fsb133) OC-->770 Asus P3B-F mobo 256 Meg Ram Creative Soundblaster Live! WinME upgrade to Win2000

Thanks for the responses. I certainly know that Win2000 is the way to go, but I'd like to have the 98 codebase available to play older games. I guess I'm stuck.

    WinME upgrade to Win2000

Is it possible to use an OEM version of WinME as the "qualifying software" for an update to Win2000? I read somewhere in this forum that some type of patch is available, but I searched Microsoft.com and can't find it, and now I can't find the post here that mentioned it. What I want to do is start with a 2 partitions, install the OEM WinME and then install the upgrade win2000 to the other partition. I hope that my question is clear and I'm sorry if this has been covered elsewhere. Any ideas?

    Win2000 and Whistler cable speed

Thanks I checked those sites and they helped alot, thanks. I think that something in whistler is just faster. Cant wait for the final.
  11. I've recently had an opportunity to try out Whistler on my machine. I'm using it in a dual boot config, with win2k. I also recently got a cable connection (finally) and after setting up my connection, I found that Whistler is almost 2x faster (in terms of download speed) than win2k. Has anyone else found this to be true? I was using Win2k in a home network before, is there some setting related to that that could be slowing my connection? When I set up Whistler, I just typed in my IP and away I went. I dont know why win2k would be so much slower than whistler. Thanks, everyone. Great board!

    Whistler phone home?

Hey everyone, I've read somewhere (probably alot of people know where) that it is possible that Whister phones MS, and relays information. Anyone have any info on this, or is it just plain untrue? I really respect the posters of this forum, and I thought if anyone would know and be willing to offer advice, it would be you guys. Thanks in advance. wozzeck
