  1. One thing I haven't seen mentioned is that Copper conducts heat better. Electricity was mentioned, but heat is transfered more quickly as well. That is the main reason for copper being pushed, it has a much higher thermal conductivity, I think 4x higher than copper. Gold and platinum are even more efficient, but can see the obvious problem there 8) $$$ Such is the logic in the heatsinks with the copper bottom. The copper spreads the heat away from the CPU and the alumminum then quickly dissipates it into the air! It's the best of both worlds. Don't sell copper short, it does have many advantages. Copper away from heat will cool better than aluminum directly on heat, but aluminum the same distance will cool faster. But the heat will be spread there more efficiently with copper! It's quite a cycle. A Copper base with upward forks into the aluminum, and aluminum forks in the air, it's quite a marvellous design, not too expensive, because there isn't too much copper, and get's the best of both worlds. Even if the heatsink is a pour conductor of heat, as Aluminum is compared to copper (4x), heat will always dissipate to an area of lower concentration. I don't care how hot your cpu is, it is still cooler than your cpu, as that's where the heat is being generated to start with. If you think that the price of the copper heatsinks is mostly for profit, take a look at prices for common sized blocks of both Aluminum and Copper. Copper actually does cost a lot more, and being a harder metal also costs more to mill and work with. Replace your bios battery to fix the bios reset problem, take it with you to any electronic store, or anywhere that has batteries, hardware stores like Canadian Tire have them too I believe. Random restarts, could also be a voltage problem on the motherboard, as was the case with mine, though if yoour cpu isn't being cooled I'd place my money there. It could also be caused by an older BIOS. MAke sure you have the latest bios, that can often fix it. And what kind of CPU are you trying to cool? If it's an older one then you don't need a massive anything, just a regular heatsink will stop it from over heating. Even without a fan, a heatsink making good contact would make a huge improvement, an easy thing to do if it's not being cooled at all atm.

replace all your Instant Messaging software [read this]

Quote: Then, how come Microsoft licenses technology from Executive Software & Norton/Symantec in many of them OS add-ons in defraggers... and in Office too, with the WinFax add-on for Outlook? MS doesn't control the companies, but they do have control of their liscence of the software; many companies have also been bullied into alliances with MS. I wonder who approached who about the XP firewall (Tiny Firewall it's called I think, though I can check for sure)? Those defraggers and add-ons and what not do not promote competition. People don't see that the defrag technology is developed by Symantec and say to them selves, "Hey, I think I'll go buy some Symantec things now." Why buy the cow when you get the milk for free? MS may consider buying out the company altogether, but they probably wouldn't incorporate it into there OS. What if someone starting using it, desided they liked ICQ, download AOLs official client and desided that they really like actually having a history, and stick with it. hmm But wait, there is another side to consider. Think about this... MS packages a good multi-protocal messaging program, and users use it instead of all the others. The other companies are still getting their networks used, but their advertising isn't being displayed, MICROSOFT's is! MS is then stealing possible business from the other companies. And as mentioned, they would probably get pulled into a long legal battle over it. Alternatively MS could just sue Cerulean Studios for allowing unauthorized usage of their network and crush them like a bug. They constantly update their protocol to try to prevent other people from using the network. Trillian had to release a patch for MSN to get around the last one I believe. Quote: Cool. I actually LIKE the fact that enter=send! I can't stand having to go ctrl-Enter r even clicking "send" myself. LOL. I think Trillian ROX as it is, only they reeeeeally need to implement file-transfer stuff! What client are you a native user of? As a long time ICQ user I enjoy the ability to type multi-line messagess, but hitting enter in Trillian sends the message; you can't can't hit enter for a new line! It is my opinion that Trillian should be based around the model of ICQ. It has been my experience that ICQ has many more features than the other programs, and at the moment, switching to Trillian would be a severe downgrade. To introduce many of the options in ICQ to the other medians wouldn't such a shock to the system. It's easier to learn a new feature if you want to, or ignore it if you don't then it is to be deprived of an essential element. Having no history is like being kicked in the crotch for me, and only being able to send short messages, what a pain! If I want to say more, i have to type it in a message at a time, and if I do that, I can't review what I already said as there's no history. I'm aware of the log feature, but it's about 1% better than nothing, as everything is in there. Sending one message involves at least 3 lines: Opening session, message content, and closing session. I don't know about you, but personally I don't consider sending one message a "session". The essential elements from ICQ should be offered as an option, like "enter sends message", or an option for the message mode, like ICQ has. I obviously understand that the program is under heavy devolopment, only being at v0.635, but there are A LOT of basic things that need to be fixed before more advanced things like file transfers are implemented. Personally, I run an FTP server, and part of the reason for that is my inability to recieve files from many people, do to my firewall. I still hope they get the option in there. Thanx for telling me about CTRL+ENTER. I use the keystroke whenever visiting websites, but it's cool to know other was to do it in ICQ. x i b a s e , CTRL+ENTER = load http://www.xibase.com in IE

Not a snow balls chance in hell they would ever consider looking favourably on such a product. They would never put something in there OS that they didn't have control over, and would never promote alternatives like ICQ. btw shassouneh, ICQ is owned by AOL, has been since 1998 I believe... It's a great idea, but I have some serious issues with it. I can't stand the way it deals with the history (aka, what history?), and I can't hit enter without the message being sent. I know it's a work in progress, but it didn't even import any of my icq things, even though it knew exactly where to look and what account there was to use. I've joined there forums and am speaking up in there suggestions forums, ICQ section.
  4. I've seen this mentioned a few times around here now, I'm giving it a shot right now infact!

Post the applications or tools u can't live without it

ICQ (You can live without it? ) DAP (you gotta have SOME sorta software. I should try out flashget, though I just converted someone back to dap from it, the traiter!) IE (to find the stuff) Bersirc (to discuss the stuff) FlashFXP (to download/transfer the stuff) Serv-U 3 (to get more stuff) DAMN NFO Viewer (to learn about the stuff) QuickSFV (to verify the stuff) WinRAR (to extract the stuff) Daemon-Tools (to test the stuff) BlindWrite!! (to burn the stuff) Java SDK 1.4 TextPad (for the java) Yea, that's all I really do, download and burn stuff. Sometimes I do Java programming at home, sometimes homework too. I more often play one or two of the games from all that stuff above. If you like RTS games and want a good 100% polished one, go buy BattleRealms, it's tough and it's worth it! Cynan, it's interesting to see what other people do with there time. It can sometimes give you a better idea of who they are and what they're all about. You shouldn't be so cynical, even though your name does look kinda similar.

Okay, just to make sure I was in error myself, I went back through the thread. I read all the posts about the links, and downloaded them, etc. If you download the file from the first link in the very first post, you get a small 87 KB app that, when attempted to be installed, says it's out of date, and to go to this certain page. I remember doing this at the beginning, the old file is still there, and the provided link doesn't go anywhere. I ended up going to the main site and browsing for the proper download. I tried right clicking, and selecting "Install", and got the exact same error. Install is bold, meaning that it is the default operation executed when an .msi file is double clicked. Double clicking on it or right clicking and selecting install makes no difference. Maybe Install isn't the default operation on your computer, but I can't possibly imagine why. I highly doubt that you would want to Repair or Uninstall by default... RandyC then posted a proper working link at the very end of the what has become the first page; thank you RandyC. The link he provided links to a download script which then triggers the download for the proper download. This 1.27 MB file works perfectly, by both double clicking it, or taking the other way around and right clicking and Installing (as they are the exact same thing). Please notice the difference in file sizes. 87 KB versus 1.27 MB is a BIG difference! I think I'm going to email the author, I'm very impressed by this software. I'm also going to point out that he has a bad link in that installer's script. That file probably isn't even ment to be downloaded. Maybe it's a beta version, or a installer script test, or something left over from an older version of the site, before a download script file was set up to moderate this things. ofelas, where did you get that original link from? I see that's it's coming off a @home members webspace =(

There is nothing to "set up" with windows installer though. XP comes with it, we do nothing but double click the file. I had the same problem at first, I downloaded the original link, I got the message, I downloaded the current one from the site and got the new one and it worked. A date time out setting like that is programmed into the installed when it is set up, so that people don't use old versions of the software. Windows installer just does what it's scripted to do, and that's display the message "this is too old" if, well, if it's too old. I'm going to re-read through the thread to make sure you're not looking at something I missed.

Different problem. The problem they're receiving from downloading the link at the top of the page, it points to an outdated installer. The double-click operation is Install by default. They downloaded an older file, and need to go to the site and get the new one, which I believe someone was kind enough to link to further up. If there's a way around this date check, it shouldn't be done, there's usually a reason those checks are put into place, why use older software when the new stuff has bugs fixed?

A note to anyone that is having problems with XP not seeing cds that are inserted. If you eject the cd, then click on it's icon in Windows Explorer, windows will sit and wait for the cd to be inserted. I think this forces Windows to sit and look at the drive, but whatever it does, it has increased the probability of a freshly inserted cd being seen to about 90%.

I don't think anyone is really having troubles with the software itself. My problem is with XP not playing nice with my burner. The install for the software was easy. The "Install" is the same command that is executed when the file is double clicked anyways =)

I think daemon-tools is involved in the problem some how. I to am running daemon-tools and use it regularly.
  12. Yes, tis nice. No I get greedy and want the best of both worlds. I want it to ONLY start when I click it, as I do use it once in a while. Oh well, I can turn it back on if I need.
  13. If I stop it from ever running, can it still be run if I need by clicking on the icon? I still want to understand why editing the file doesn't yeild any extra options to me, that's my main concern.

ISO Recorder Power Toy for XP Pro/Home

It's new to me and I love it! I used to have a Creative 6424e, and flashed it with the hardwares native firmware, liberating it to it's hertiage as a Ricoh 7060a, supporting DAO PW subs. The new burner is also a Ricoh, born as a MP7120a (4mb buffer), and upgraded via firmware to a MP7125 on steroids (4mb buffer AND Justlink!), I like to think of it as a 7126, and that's what I'll refer to it as here on in. The 7060a was seen as a recorder, but the 7126 is not. I can burn just fine with it, though it does seems to have some problems. Sometimes I insert a cd, but Windows doesn't know there is a CD there! I click on the drive, and it tells me to insert a cd. If I open up Nero to check the drive, it sees that there's a disc in there, but it wouldn't be able to do anything with it. I've been told that this is a problem with XP, and I'm inclined to believe, as Daemon-Tools does it too. I've experimented with this phenomenon both with and without Daemon-Tools installed, to try to see if that was the problem, but it doesn't seem to be. I trust the guy I bought the burner from and have no reason to believe it's damaged at all. I haven't made one coaster with it yet and have burned at nothing but 12x, showing that once windows let's the programs access the drive there is no problem. Sometimes I popping out the tray and reinserting it will fix the problem. Sometimes it won't though, usually while I am doing too many other things to restart the computer, so i just leave it. Then, I'll come back later on, and it may be reading it fine. Sometimes it'll load just fine, but when I pop out the cd, and pop in a new one, it won't change the cd label. On time it sat there telling me that Max Payne was in the drive, have a broken icon for the cd icon, and have the real contents of the drive when I click on the drive itself. Sometimes, thought I don't know if this is related, explorer.exe likes to freeze up. I can continue using the computer fine when I close it,a dn can restart it without a problem, but what a pain. I think I've almost narrowed it down to a certain process, but that's for another post. If anyone has any suggestions I would be more than happy to hear them. Ricoh doesn't make this drive anymore, if you check out their website, it's on the discontinued product page, right near the top. i think I should move this to it's own thread, but I don't know what forum to put it in.

Looks like a great tool, but XP doesn't recognize my new burner as an actual burner. I used to always disable the builtin burning features to avoid any problems with good software, but I don't even have that option now =( I can't even test out this powertoy because of that!
  17. I didn't mean removing Messanger in Win2k, I meant simply editing the sysoc.inf file by removing hide in every line that had it. I have never seen those "hidden" options become unhidden in XP though. Am I looking in the right place? I don't care so much about Messanger, but I would like to know what I'm doing wrong, as there are many other things there as well.
  18. I have done this many many times, I did it with Win2k as well. I never see these options on the add/remove list though! I don't see them on add/remove, or in the Windows Components sections. Can someone give me a hand?

    Post your favorite CD-burning software!

BlindWrite, DiscJuggler, CloneCD, and Nero for the rare occasions that I make regular music cds. BlindWrite copies and protected cd I can throw at it, even when CloneCD failed me in the past, and writes cue/bin, so it's perfect for me. DiscJuggler for the Dreamcast, and it can bur bin files as well. The one thing I love about DJ and have yet to see it anywhere else is VERIFYING a cd after it's burnt. Testing a burn is all fine and dandy, but testing pre-burn has NEVER helped me out one iota. I like to know that my cds actually burned correctly, so I use DJ if I'm having problems. DJ can burn CloneCD images too, though not the sub codes, just the raw data. CloneCD for perfect downloads, no one seems to have stuff in BlindWrite, I assume because CloneCD is more supported.
  20. I don't actually care though, I ws just trying to give them a hand. I computer is fast enough for me as it is, thank-you. =)

    alt+ctrl+del = Task Manager?

What screen you get upon hitting CRTL+ALT+DEL depends whether you are running as a Workgroup, or a domain I believe. I set up XP on my aunts computers (workgroup) and got the new logonscreen, but on my own machine (domain), I got the classic Win2k logon. Same thing happened with the Task Man. I got what I expected on MY machine, but THEIR'S went right to TaskMan. If you wanna log on with "Administrator" from the workgroup logon screen, press CTRL+ALT+DEL, twice, and the option should be there... i beleive.

    desktop themes under windows XP

The XP Theme support IS WindowBlinds. MS licensed the technology from Stardoc. You can should be able to use WindoeBlind themes directly in WinXP. The themes settings should be in Display Properties (right click desktop > properties)
  23. URLs, benchmarks, something, ANYTHING would be more than you've really given them. Hey guys, you should come to my house and test out my banana! I peeled it myself, and set it on my computer! It's making my Voodoo5 output 137FPS at 1600x1200, 32-bit colour, with 4xFSAA!!! I've tested it out with a wide array of syntetic benchmarks too, and they all agree that that banana is making my Voodoo5 a powerhouse of speed! Honest, I swear!!! I peeled it myself, i think I should know! I won't tell you HOW to peel the banana, or you may try it yourself, and then try to sell it! Give them something to go on. How do you get paid for your work on the program? Do you get royalties, or did you receive a fixed amount. You're not an employee, so you're not getting paid that way. If you're not getting paid for it anymore, and you're not under NDA you can tell us how it works. If you wrote that stuff, and it's patiented, give us the patent numbers, perhaps someone would like to look them up. Some people are VERY edgey about what goes on their computer. It's not usually an issue, most software gives SOME idea of what it does. You are being VERY evasive about the whole matter though. They're not going to install something without knowing what it's doing. All they want is a general idea, they don't need exact details (atleast I don't). You aren't doing anything to belay they're fears! If you were a friend of mine, one that I trusted, I'd try it out, but you're just some guy. I'd react the same way as they are if some guy came up to me on the street and told me he has magic poweder that can do wonderful things. I sure as hell wouldn't want to try it unless I knew exactly what it did, not just the result! The ends don't always justify the means. URLs, charts, details. If you wrote so much of it, then you should have a pretty good idea of how it works. And if you're not being paid, and aren't legally bound to silence, you have no reasons I can think of to NOT tell! (unless you play to rehash the same concepts to another company for more money perhaps?)
  24. I went through this search last week and came up empty handed. When I looked, there were no 100% working WinXP drivers, though they are expected soon from x3dfx-c. I did find better drivers for Win2k though! I'll post the link tonight if you're interested though, it was nearly impossible for me to find the site a second time.
